The beginning of bronze coinage in Karia and Lykia / R.H.J. Ashton

Source:

Numismatic Chronicle 166 (2006) p. 1-14, pl. 1-5

Abstract:

Most of the early bronze issues of Karia discussed below weigh between 0.5 and 1.5 grams and range in diameter from 8 to 12mm, the earliest coins tending to be smaller than the later. For the sake of convenience I call all these coins chalkoi on the provisional assumption that the earliest issues were experimental in nature, were found to be inconveniently small, and were replaced by issues of slightly larger module. The assumption is far from proven.

Abstract:

In 1897 the British Museum acquired, and George Hill published, a didrachm struck by the Oinoandans in the Milyas/northern Lykia.2 At the time it was the only known coin struck in the name of the Oinoandans as opposed to the Termessians at Oinoanda,3 and it remained unique until about 100 didrachms of the same series, clearly from a hoard, started to appear on the American and European market in 2002.

Kaunos, not Miletos or Mylasa / R.H.J. Ashton

Source:

Numismatic Chronicle 164 (2004) p. 33-46, pl. 2

Abstract:

In 1998, largely on the basis of material in the Archaeological Museum at Fethiye (ancient Telmessos on the coast between Karia and Lykia), I suggested that the bronze coinage of Eupolemos may have been struck at Kaunos and not at Mylasa where it is normally assigned, and that certain bronze issues of Demetrios Poliorketes from south-west Asia Minor could also be attributed to Kaunos. In the following year I noted briefly that the same might hold true of some bronze issues in the names of Alexander III and Philip III which had hitherto been assigned to Miletos or Mylasa.2 The purpose of the present article is to expand on these ideas, particularly the attributions of the Alexander III and Philip III issues, in the light of old and new evidence.

Abstract:

A recent hoard of mid- late fourth century drachms of Knidos prompts production of a die-study and of relative and absolute chronologies. Contemporary and near- contemporary tetradrachms, didrachms, hemidrachms and bronze issues are also discussed, and die-studies provided of the tetradrachms and didrachms.

Abstract:

Louis Robert (1904-1985) dominated the twentieth century as the foremost Greek epigraphist of his time. In 1998, his widow, Jeanne Robert (1910-2002), gave to the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres their archives under the name "Fonds Louis Robert". This paper gives a description of the numismatic part of these archives. We may divide the numismatic content of the Fonds Robert into three categories of doucments: 1) correspondence received by him (including some 150 letters from Henri Seyrig), 2) notes taken by Louis Robert and 3) coins and casts. A total of 1,139 coins (44 in silver and 1,095 in bronze) as well as 2,658 casts have been recorded. Most coins were acquired during their journeys in the Turkish countryside (from 1932 to 1963, but mostly during the years 1946-1948) and have been registered with great care and precise provenances. Karia is the most representend area with the cities of Euromos, Hydissos and Mylasa coming at the forefront. It is the aim of the author to publish this collection as a specific volume of the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum.

Liber amicorum Tony Hackens / éd. par Ghislaine Moucharte ... [et al.]. - Louvain-la-Neuve : Association de numismatique professeur Marcel Hoc, 2007. - P. 203-211

Abstract:

The heavy (c. 8.1g = didrachms) Hellenistic coins of Oinoanada (Lycia) were known by just one specimen up to 2002. The dispersal of a recent hoard (2002) makes this small issue nearly common (4 obverse dies, 9 reverse dies, 85 coins published by Ashton in 2005 but many more sold since then). For Richard Ashton, this issue is to be placed after the treaty of Apameia (188 BC), when Oinoanda was rattached to the Attalid kingdom. This paper argues for a much later chronology after the treaty of Dardanos (85 BC), mainly for epigraphical reasons (conjunction of lunar epsilon, alpha with broken horizontal hasta and cursive omega). The weights of these didrachms look also better placed after 85 BC than iafter 188 BC. For Ashton, this exceptional issue was motivated by the building of remparts after the annexion to the Attalid kingdom. I favour a Roman explanation, just like the no less exceptional issues (because not framed before or after by anything silmilar inside the coinage of the city and even in a near horizon outside the city) of didrachms by the Ainianes in Thessaly. The so-called "second Mithridatic war" lead by the Roman general Murena offers an appropriate context to these didrachms.

A tentative attribution to a new mint in Karia is presented here for a prolific series of Classical silver fractions. Kuprlli or Kherẽi : a problem of attribution or a problem of method? / Novella Vismara

Source:

Israel Numismatic Research 5 (2010) p. 13-20, pl. 3-4

Abstract:

Since its appearance in about 2000, the Lycia 2000 hoard has focused critical attention on the anepigraphic issue depicting a ‘lion attacking a bull’ (obverse) and ‘bull’ walking right or left with triskeles above (reverse). The two series were separately attributed to the rulers Kuprlli and Kherẽi. But these coins are attributable neither to Kuprlli nor Kherẽi. Rather than argue for a new attribution, we need to be asking: What political, cultural or economic reasons may there have been for the minting authority not to have identiied itself with an inscription — as was done on other contemporaneous issues?

Abstract:

In the numismatic bibliography, the Lycian coins of archaic period (from the end of VI century to 260 B.C.) are only present with a certain consistence from the first half of ves the XIX century, when change political conditions made the trips of explorers and more frequent European researchers in Smaller Asia. However the coins of Lycian didn’t witness completely absent from the numismatic harvests this duration, rather they were not published because the researchers did not known the name of the mint. The travels started in the XIX century, therefore they have strengthened the knowledges numismatic, while first allowing the identification of considered productions of uncertain situ.
