New archaic coin finds at Sardis / Nicholas Cahill and John H. Kroll

American Journal of Archaeology 109 (2005) 4 (October) p. 489-619

Abstract:

Two archaic coins were discovered in excavations of the western fortification of Lydian Sardis in the summer of 2002. The coins, one gold and one silver, are Lydian 12th staters with the confronting foreparts of a lion and bull on the obverse and a square incuse punch on the reverse, the type of coins that are commonly referred to today as "croeseids." They come from under and around a cobbled pavement belonging to the fortification. The pavement and the coins under it were sealed by destruction debris when the fortification was demolished, an event that can be confidently assigned to the capture of Sardis by Cyrus the Great of Persia in the 540s B.C. A third coin, although not recognized as such at the time, was found in 1988 in the destruction debris itself with the skeleton of a young man, probably a casualty of the battle. Upon cleaning, this coin proved to be a croeseid silver 24th stater. The discovery of these coins from a secure context offers a new and much-needed fixed point in the chronology of the Archaic coinage of Asia Minor.

Abstract:

A recent hoard (« Staters of Pergamum 2004 ») allows to quintuple the number of gold staters struck at Pergamum on the Attic standard in the wake of Alexander the Great (22 new ex. for five already known, out of which at least four coming from the Saïda hoard buried in c. 320 BC). Perfectly preserved, highly interconnected through dies, and with weights higher than those of Saïda, this new staters enable to refine the chronology of an issue which is best located at the end of the 330s. The joined study of the other exceptional issues of contemporary gold staters of Attic standard (Rhodes, Abydos, Kios) leads to the strong presumption that all these coinages have to be linked with the Macedonian military campaign. Thus, numismatics allows us to write a page of history about which written sources are mute: how Alexander did finance the first phase of his Asiatic expedition before to seize Persian booty?

WALWET and KUKALIM : Lydian coin legends, dynastic succession, and the chronology of Mermnad kings / Alexander Dale

Source:

Kadmos 54 (2015) 1-2 p. 151-166

Abstract:

This paper examines the walwet and kukalim legends appearing on early electrum coinage from Lydia. After a survey of previous interpretations, it is argued that the appurtenance suffix in kukalim functions as a patronymic, ‘I am a son/descendant of Gyges’, referring to Alyattes, whose name is now gen- erally and correctly seen in walwet. Building on this, the chronological impli- cations that this reading poses for the dates of Alyattes are then considered in relation to the revised dating of coins from the Artemisium deposit. It is suggested that Alyattes was already on the Lydian throne by ca. 635 BC, a dating which has further implications for the chronology of other rulers of the Mermnad dynasty.

The koinon of Athena Ilias and its coinage / Aneurin Ellis-Evans

Source:

American Journal of Numismatics 2nd ser. 28 (2016) p. 105-158, pl. 36-46

Abstract:

This article presents the first die study of the coinage of the koinon of Athena Ilias, the evidence for which has doubled since the series was last catalogued in Alfred Bellinger’s Troy: The Coins (1961). The new evidence confirms the longevity of the series (late 180s/early 170s–60s/50s bc) and suggests that the series was minted continually but at a low level of production throughout this period. It also provides an opportunity to revisit the question of the identity of the magistrate named on the reverse of the coins and the length of time they were in office, questions which have primarily been discussed in relation to the epigraphic evidence. It is argued that the purpose of the coinage was twofold: to provide the agonothetai who ran the festival with cash with which to make external payments and to act as a status symbol for the koinon’s festival. The early dating of the series proposed here contributes to our understanding of the development of the phenomenon of civic spread-flan coinages in the midsecond century, while the late end date combined with the results of the die study provide an opportunity to look at the impact of the Mithradatic Wars on the finances of the koinon’s cities.

Abstract:

This third and last article of the three-part project of the Kyzikene electrum deals with the very first issues. They bear a tunny, the city's emblem, or just the head or tail of a tunny, or a combination of the three. The main denomination at the onset of the coinage is the twelfth; even sixth are rare and staters even more so. It becomes evident that the coinage was originally intended just for local circulation. It was only in the later 6th c. that the coin types became more varied and larger denominations more frequent. Furthermore, a lead market weight from Kyzikos of the early 4lh c. is published.

Abstract:

This is a compilation of the coin types which were not known to H. von Fritze when he published his corpus  im 1912, for its time a monumental achievement. The coins are grouped according to themes, most with a brief discussion of their possible models. No attempt at a chronological order is made, as not to anticipate a later, full publication of the city's entire electrum coinage.

Abstract:

This second article of a three-part project deals with those denominations which were not known to von Fritze in 1910. Of 202 types studied (not counting the early ones with fish heads or tails) new denominations of 80 types have appeared since, in several cases more than one of a type. The picture that emerges shows that at the onset of Kyzikene electrum coinage small denominations prevailed, even sixth are relatively rare. Staters become more important in the last quarter of the sixth century and dominate the coinage from the end of the fifth until it comes to an end around 330 BC. A map of the documented findspots of Kyzikene staters shows that they played an important role in the trade between Greece and southern Russia, especially in the fourth century. A third article will deal with the beginning of Kyzikene electrum coinage with its numerous fractions.

Summary:

The imperial coinage of Cyzicus, strucked from Augustus to Adrian, reflects the evolution of the imperial cult notion in the city. During the julio-claudian period, a small size coinage, like the one of the hellenistic age of the city, is organised by its right types. Monetary reform under Vespasian modifie the system, but the iconography too. Trend is, under Domitian, to assimilate the imperial couple with divinities and local heros. But it's the Adrian regn witch formalise aspirations of the city to take part in the imperial cult in an more explicit way.

Abstract:

The paper deals with the beginning of coinage at Gergis, a polis of the interior of ancient Troas whose remains are close to the village of Karincali, province of Bayramiç (NW Turkey). Four series of new small silver fractions (very likely tetrobols) that appeared recently in the market together with other Troadic pieces are presented and discussed here. They are tentatively dated between 470 and 440 B.C., thus much anticipating the beginning of coinage of this mint hitherto fixed around 400 B.C. The first three series show a sphinx on the obverse and an Athena’s head on the reverse, both types imitated on the Archaic coins of Chios and on those of Methymna, respectively; small variations are only observed in the obverse. The fourth series, with a much more developed and beautiful style shown by the sphinx, has a nice Gorgon head as the reverse type. The attribution of these coins to Gergis is based on the type of the sphinx that appears in later obols with the name of the town (initial), and upon their finding in association with other Troadic coins.

Abstract:

The author presents a die study of the early Seleucid silver mint of Sardes that expands on and corrects the small study originally done by E. T. Newell. A new chronological arrangement for the Sardian series is suggested on the basis of die sequence and hoard evidence. Stylistic affinities between the first die of Sardes and the last of Seleucia in Pieria raise the possibility that the equipment and personnel of the latter may have been moved to Sardes to serve as a supplemental military mint. This suggests that the opening of the Lydian mint was connected to the closure of the mint at Seleucia in Pieria.

Abstract:

The author describes the place of the daric in the development of the coinage of Sardes, and links its weight with that of the Babylonian shekel of Darius I. He explores the question of exchange between the earlier electrum and the gold and silver issues struck at Sardes under the Persians, suggesting that there was a significant fall in the value of silver over the second half of the 6th century BC.

Abstract:

The hoard gives the reason to redat the so named 'map-coins' with the Persian king.
