Une épiphanie de Zeus Sôter à Clazomènes / Thibaut Boulay

Abstract:

Autonomous tetradrachms issued by Clazomènes in the mid-second century B.C. in the name and types of Zeus Soter Epiphanes and an Amazon on the reverse must not be linked to the victory won by Eumenes II over the Galatians in 166. These currency, minted to be used during panegyreis, celebrated a saving epiphany of Zeus Soter, perhaps during the war between Prusia II and Attalus II..

Abstract:

This article discusses the coinages issued by the cities of mainland Ionia between c. 404 and c. 332, and attempts to assess their significance and relative importance. Whereas many of these coinages were clearly intended for local use only, the electrum sixths of Phocaea and the silver tetradrachms of Ephesus stand out as series struck on a large scale and enjoying wide ciruclation.

Abstract:

Mount Nif (Olympos) is located in the east of Izmir. To the north of it there is Kemalpas¸a, to the south is Torbalı Plains and to the east is Karabel Gate. Ballıcaoluk castle is located in the hillside of the mountain. The castle that dominates the Torbalı Plain was builded in 4. century B.C. During the excavations carried out under the presidency of Elif Tül Tulunay between 2008-2015, 20 coins, 3 of which are silver and 17 are bronze, which are dated to Late Classical and Hellenistic period, were found in the castle and these coins from the subject of this study.

Abstract:

Edition of 39 coins found and collected by Durmuş Sulu who works as forester on Nif Mount. These coins were donated by him to the İzmir Archeology Museum in 2000. The collection consist of 24 hellenistic, 2 roman provincial 2 late roman, 3 byzantine coins, except 8 undefined coins because of their poor conditions. Comparing the coins collected by Durmuş Sulu from the north of the mountain with the finds of Karamattepe, Dağkızılca, Ballıcaoluk and Başpınar which are situated on south of the mountain during the Nif Mount Excavations and those of Sardeis excavations gives us possibility to see and to understand the coin circulation at the mountain.

Two 'double' dedications at Ephesus and the beginning of Ptolemaic control of Ionia / Andrew Meadows

Source:

Gephyra 10 (2013) p. 1-12

Abstract:

This paper reconsiders the texts of two inscriptions found in the Austrian excavations at Ephesus in Hanghaus II: IEphesos 199 and SEG 33 942. Proposed restoration of the texts suggests that both stones preserve rare ‘double dedications’ to both the royal couple of Ptolemy and Arsinoe, and Sarapis and Isis. Comparison with other known examples suggests that these belong to the reign of Ptolemy IV Philopator, not, as has been suggested in the past, to the reign of Ptolemy II. They are evidence for the promulgation of royal cult and the worship of Sarapis and Isis, by senior military officials, perhaps in the years following the Battle of Raphia. The reattribution of these stones to this later period removes any evidence for Ptolemaic control north of the River Maeander before the Third Syrian War.
