Abstract:

The large square building in the southeast corner of the Athenian Agora, excavated in the 1950s and in 1978, served as the Athenian mint for the striking of bronze coins from the 4th through the late 1st century B.C. The best-preserved part of the building, the southwest room, produced ample evidence of industrial activity, including unstruck bronze coin blanks and rod segments from which the blanks had been chopped. The building was constructed near the end of the 5th or at the start of the 4th century B.C., but whether it was originally intended for the coining of bronze is uncertain.

Athenian electrum coinage reconsidered : types, standard, value, and dating / by Gil Davis

Published:

London : Royal Numismatic Society, 2015

Note:

Offprint from: Numismatic Chronicle 175 (2015) p. 1-9

Abstract:

A small number of electrum coins has been attributed to Athens and placed among the Wappenmünzen (the earliest coins of Athens) broadly in the second half of the sixth century BC. However, their place and function in the Wappenmünzen series is little understood and serious doubts have been raised about their attribution to Athens. The recent discovery of an electrum coin bearing the device of a bull in excavations in the Athenian Agora (Agora 2012.12.0416) strongly indicates that this type at least belongs to Athens, but its weight (heavier than other specimens) raises again the question of the weight standard being employed. In this article I reconsider Athenian electrum coins by comparing both their obverse and reverse types with silver Wappenmünzen and find some close comparisons. On this basis I suggest which types should be more firmly considered Athenian, re-examine the weight standard and value, and cautiously propose a new dating for their production.

Mining money in Late Archaic Athens / [Gil Davis]

Source:

Historia 63 (2014) 3 p. 257-277

Abstract:

Silver mining helped transform Athens from a quiet backwater ca. 600 BCE to a dominant regional and naval power a little over a century later, but despite having large argentiferous ore deposits and being an early minter, she did not initially use much native silver for her coinage. In this paper I identify technical and geopolitical factors which explain this. I also explore the related and controversial questions of the extent to which the Athenian State benefited from the massive exploitation of the Laurion deposits, and the nexus between silver mining, monetisation of the economy, and political development.

Abstract:

This book represents a huge advance on the previous study of the material in Chester Starr's 'Athenian Coinage, 480-449 B.C.' (Oxford, 1970). Fischer Bossert has collected more than three times as many specimens as were known to Starr, and has provided a full account of the known forgeries drawn from the photo-files of major dealers, scholars and museums. This is an indispensable work for all interested in the coinage and history 5th-Century B.C. Athens. In addition, its judicious discussion of the history of the forgery of these remarkable coins will make this volume a handbook for all serious collectors of ancient Greek coinage.

Abstract:

By joining the competences of both physicists and numismatists, the main aim of this research is to solve a problem for which the traditional methods of numismatics are useless; the classification of the Athenian coinage during the second half of the 5th century B.C. Hundreds of coins have been analysed by the PIXE method at low incident proton energy in order to determine minor trace elements in the silver rich alloy. By this way, we hope firstly to find in this abundant coinage traces of historical events and secondly, that the determination of metal composition will enable us to identify the ancient imitations of Athenian coins struck at the end of the 5th century B.C. One of the main results of those analyses is that the metallic composition of several coins usually taken as ancient imitations of Athenian money does not actually differ from that of the genuine ones.

Athenian tetradrachm coinage of the first half of the fourth century BC / John H. Kroll

Published:

Bruxelles : Société Royale de Numismatique de Belgique, 2013

Abstract:

Because all earlier 4th-century tetradrachms in Attica were called in and restruck in the year 354/3 BC, hardly any of that coinage has survived except for specimens that had been exported before the restriking and were buried abroad, especially in Egyptian and Sicilian hoards. The Athenian components of several of these hoards together with other published and unpublished tetradrachms make it clear that this coinage of c.400/390 to 353 was not only substantial, but was one of the most prolific Greek coinages of the period. Discussed also is the literary evidence pertaining to the start of the coinage and the origin of the owl tetradrachms belonging to Buttrey’s style x.

Abstract:

Preliminary report on a ca. 400-piece hoard of 4th-century pi-style tetradrachms excavated in 2005 from beneath the floor of a public office in the Athenian Agora, together with publication of two other notable Athenian tetradrachms from the recent excavations. One of these tetradrachms belongs to the earliest 4th-century coinage to depict Athena with a profile eye. It is proposed that this early profile-eye coinage began probably in the 380s or 370s and was replaced by the mechanical and hastily struck pi-style silver in the later 350s.

Abstract:

This paper draws attention to evidence that was overlooked in Christophe Flament’s recently proposed revisions for the chronology and interpretation of Athenian silver coinage of the 3rd century BC. This evidence supports the prior dating of the quadridigité silver to the 280s and of all three known issues of silver pentobols to the years of the Chremonidean War (268-262 BC). In addition, the paper contends that the heterogeneous tetradrachms and fractions should be accepted as genuine Athenian emissions, and that the 3rd-century tetrobols are still best interpreted as specie minted for compensating garrison troops in Attica.

Abstract:

Combining evidence from Athenian silver coins, an unpublished Agora inscription, and several accounts concerning historical figures, this article reconstructs the Athenian program of 353 b.c. whereby all of the larger-denomination silver coinage in the city was demonetized and called in for restriking as a means of raising revenue during the fiscal crisis in the aftermath of the Social War. The folded-flan technique and erratic, substandard appearance of the resulting “pi-style” coins, attestations of their hurried production in that year, were retained in all subsequent Athenian silver coinage down into the 3rd century as recognized attributes of good Athenian money.

Abstract:

This publication of 11 small bronze tokens (diam. 6–8 mm) from the excavations in the Athenian Agora is accompanied by a review of the long-standing debate whether these pieces should be recognized as the monetary kollyboi mentioned in late fifth century Old Comedy or were tokens that had some non-monetary purpose. The paper concludes that, whereas a kollybos was a monetary value, it was never coined in the time of Old Comedy, and that the essentially fourth century and Hellenistic date of the tokens and their similarities to larger Athenian tokens of lead, bronze, and clay imply that these small tokens should not be regarded as coins.

Abstract:

The Ano Voula 1979 hoard, probably buried at the end of the Peloponnesian War, is made up of 30 Athenian silver coins (12 tetradrachms, 17 drachms and 1 triobol). The stylistic diversity of these coins found in Attica suggests that the difficult question of the attribution of several coins should once more be posed : « imitations » or lower-quality productcts of the Athenian mint ?

Abstract:

This paper has two aims. The first is to propose the restoration 'ektypon' at the end of line 9 of the law of Nicophon. 'Ektypon' refers to character and was proposed on the basis of parallels of the use of the noun 'character' with forms deriving from the verb 'ektypow' or the adjective 'ektypos, -on'. The second is to show that the law permits the circulation of Athenian imitations at Athens.

Abstract:

The ‘Attic’ tetradrachm, Asyut 422, was identified by Price and Waggoner as a contemporary imitation. Seltman placed a die-linked example in his group p. His arguments for the attribution of this group to a mint set up by an Athenian colony at Chalcis on Euboea are challenged. Compositional analyses using x-ray fluorescence spectrometry are presented, which indicate that Asyut 422 was not made of silver from Laurion.
