Revue Belge de Numismatique 157 (2011) p. 135-170

Abstract:

The chronology of the introduction of the title of basileus on the coins of Alexander (III) the Great has long remained an open question. According to recent studies, this title was introduced on “imperial” tetradrachms shortly before or after the king’s death in 323. However, no single numismatic document proves that Alexander would have changed the Macedonian practice of only showing the name of the king on his coins. In our opinion, the reasons are of an economic nature. After 323, Perdiccas, epimeletes of the two kings succeeding to Alexander, Philippe III and Alexander IV, did not have the same problem anymore ; so it is probably he who introduced the royal title to stress the royal nature of the two basileis, to which his own power base in the Empire was closely linked.

Abstract:

Images on Greek coins serve as a means of identifying the sights and inhabitants of the city-states that minted them. The reproduction of spaces and places in face design is an interesting phenomenon: alongside actually existing places, face design also depicts imaginary spatial structures representative of the city that issued the coins. This study shows, within the scope of a collection of artifacts, which spatial configurations were portrayed on archaic and classical Greek coins, and why these were chosen to characterize and represent their respective cities. Widely dispersed geographically and produced in rapid succession, Greek coins, more than almost any other art form, present an excellent opportunity for a visual-studies analysis of the representation of space and spatiality in antiquity.

Il tema dell''Aeternitas' su monete di età Greca / Maria Caccamo Caltabiano

Source:

Schweizerische Numismatische Rundschau 88 (2009) p. 251-268, pl. 19-20

Abstract:

The author analyses three coin types from the Archaic and Classical periods which she considers inspired by the theme of Aeternitas. The theme of the struggle between the lion and the bull on the coins of eastern origin was used as a dynastic badge, and expressed the concept of death and rebirth with reference to the cyclical nature of natural phenomena. In the west, a similar vision was expressed in the types depicting chariot racing. The mule biga, found on the coins of the cities around the Straits of Messina, was a vehicle used in the principal rites of passage weddings and funerals): it symbolised the alternation of life and death and eternal recommencement, as shown by the symbol of the leaf on the exergue. In Camarina, on tetradrachms from the final decades of the 5th century bc, the idea of apotheosis can be seen in the type of Heracles head and a racing or flying quadriga. The hero, represented in four different ages of man, is a model of heroic behaviour that will be rewarded with immortality. The author examines the relation between main type and symbol, and shows the existence of a semantic system based on the use of variants of the same typologies and different symbols.

Abstract:

This paper aims to shed light on the interpretation of secondary marks (symbols, monograms and letters) on Hellenistic royal issues. These marks have been variously interpreted as personal marks of a range of people, acting either outside the mint (the eponym magistrate of the city, the magistrate in charge of the monetary affairs, the benefactor who provides the metal, or even the military commander for whom coins were primarily issued) or inside the mint (the mint master, the engraver or various subordinate monetary officials). They have also been attributed to non-personal purposes (to identify officinae, indicate the source of the metal, or to designate military units as beneficiaries). Not all these explanations are convincing, and several appear very unlikely or exceptional (magistrates, liturges, engravers, military officers or units). The marks are best viewed as internal control marks, whose number and efficiency have to be considered in their broader archival context. Hence, the paucity of secondary marks on late Ptolemaic issues (a year and a mint) likely implies a more secure system of written records.

Abstract:

The stilt-birds (herons, cranes, storks or ibises) represented on many Greek coinages, especially of Kroton, were interpreted as etymological references or symbols of local landscape or watery cults. Neverthless, the analysis of their distribution and literary sources carried out in accordance with the method of the Lexicon Iconographicum Nu-mismaticae makes preferable a symbolic interpretation, as pre-announcement of the good will of the gods with which they are joined, in accordance, at Kroton, with the Pythagorean doctrines.

Abstract:

The author presents the problem of attribution of the bronze coins with the monogram Ř , found during the excavations on the sites of Abdera and Maroneia, and proposes a city named Agathocleia or Agathopolis as a probable mint. This city, otherwise unknown by the litterary sources, may either be placed somewhere between Abdera and Maroneia or be identified with a well known city of the Thracian coast, as Maroneia or Orthagoreia, who could have changed name to Agathopolis or Agathocleia for a short time, during the reign of Lysimachus.

Die Ziegen von Aigai / Wolfgang Fischer-Bossert

Summary:

Many of the Greek cities whose name begins with the syllable Aig- struck coins with a goat, using the goat, aix, as a canting badge. As in other cases, scholars willingly embraced this clue for an attribution, without wondering why the Greeks had chosen this type. For a couple of years the attribution of the late archaic Macedonian staters with a goat to Macedonian Aegae has been challenged. In other cases, other 'goat badges' are certainly true. It is argued that this canting badge is derived from a popular etymology leading to some fanciful historical aetiologies from the 4th century bc onward. The syllable 'aig' has nothing to do with goats but with the geographical position of the cities in question, which were all situated in coastal regions. They would keep the name even if for some reason they were moved inland, and newly founded cities could use a traditional name without being on the coast.

Votive coins in Delian inscriptions / [Percy Gardner]

Abstract:

In the very important Delian inscriptions of which one is published by M. Homolle in the sixth volume of the Bulletin dc Correspondance Hellénique, mention is made among the votive offerings preserved in the temple of Apollo of several sorts of coins. In his comments upon these mentions, both in the inscription which he publishes, and in others which he has read and copied, M. Homolle is less correct than in other parts of his very valuable paper; numismatics being a branch of archaeology in regard to which excellent scholars are sometimes strangely ill-informed. It may perhaps be of some service, in view of M. Homolle's further publications in the same line which may be shortly expected, to insert here a few notes on the votive coins of his Delian lists; and so contribute a little to the full success of his very important labours.

Alexander the Great and the mystery of the elephant medallions / Frank L. Holt

Berkeley ; London : University of California Press, cop. 2003

Summary:

To all those who witnessed his extraordinary conquests, from Albania to India, Alexander the Great appeared invincible. How Alexander himself promoted this appearance--how he abetted the belief that he enjoyed divine favor and commanded even the forces of nature against his enemies--is the subject of Frank L. Holt's absorbing book. Solid evidence for the 'supernaturalized' Alexander lies in a rare series of medallions that depict the triumphant young king at war against the elephants, archers, and chariots of Rajah Porus of India at the Battle of the Hydaspes River. Recovered from Afghanistan and Iraq in sensational and sometimes perilous circumstances, these ancient artifacts have long animated the modern historical debate about Alexander.

Abstract:

The Peloponnesian issues under the Severans display a rich iconography which offers valuable insights into the religious life of the local communities. In this article, some characteristic examples illustrate the use of numismatic types as markers of civic and religious identity and as testimony to the relations among neighbouring cities. The contribution of literary sources proves essential for the interpretation of the often enigmatic numismatic types.

Crowning the emperor : an unorthodox image of Claudius, Agrippa I and Herod of Chalkis / Andreas J.M. Kropp

Abstract:

This article looks at a narrative image on the coins of two Herodian kings, Agrippa I (AD 37-44) and Herod of Chalkis (AD 41-48). It shows the two kings crowning the emperor Claudius with wreaths. The crowning scene seems familiar, even banal, at first sight, a routine allegory to glorify the emperor’s victories and successes. But a closer look reveals that the constellation is in fact highly original, a creative adaptation of common motifs, re-channelled to concoct a new narrative of royal ideology. Whereas the intended message of glorification is fairly transparent, the unorthodox arrangement of figures in this image also has the potential for unintended interpretations that would, from a Roman angle, be considered off-message.

Abstract:

It has been tried to describe the history of origins and impacts of the 'Sandalenlöser' ('solver of the sandals'). Though some theses remain hypothetical by nature, the numismatic tradition implicates new aspects which at least reveal the mythological background of the motive. The bronze statue of Hermes solving his sandals has presumably been endowed to the sanctuary of the muses at the Helicon after 338 B.C. as a work of Lysippos. There it was arrayed as part of a bigger group together with Apollon and the (already earlier erected) muses. At the same time Lysippos has been assigned to create a statue of Eros at Thespiai. The historical background was the destruction of Thebes in 338 B.C. which led to the fact that Thespiai regained the leadership of the Panhellenic Games in the Museion at the Helicon. The Erotideia had been devoted to the civic tutelary deity Eros and the Museia to Apollon Musagetes, the genesis of which depicted by the bronze group 'Apollon and Hermes arguing about the lyre'. Therein the statue represented the deity of the Arcadian hymn to Hermes, which mentions twice the taking off of the sandals. During the Roman Imperial Period the sculpture was part of the repertoire of the copyists at Athens. During his winter abode in 131/32 Hadrian sent a replica from there to Trapezous as a memory of the Arcadian colonisation of this Pontic city. In Amastris a replica of the type made the same statement. Hadrian had at least two replicas be acquired for his villa at Tivoli. When Constantine the Great had the sanctuary of the muses be looted, some of the statues made their way to Constantinople. The 'Sandalenlöser' found his new array in the Gymnasion of Zeuxippos until he vanished during the riots of Nika in 532. The positive reception of this type within the collection of Ludwig I stopped after the Second World War, when the restorations of the 18th century had been removed as an expression of extreme purism. The now terribly ruined torso was then stashed in the cellar rooms, where it remains until today as a hidden masterpiece waiting for its rediscovery.

Abstract:

The image that political governors projected of themselves to their subjects, following strategies to legitimize and consolidate their power, has always caught researchers’ attention, largely favored by the attraction that the pictures have exerted, especially the monetary ones. It is an extremely rich and complex subject since it allows approaches from multiple angles, as many as the functions coins acquired. In this paper, we deal with the evolution followed by coin portraits in the Greek world until they became one of the most important expressions of authority and sovereignty.

Heiligtümer der Aphrodite Paphia in der antiken Münzprägung / Holger Schwarzer

Abstract:

Das bedeutendste Aphrodite-Heiligtum der Antike – jenes der Aphrodite Paphia in Palaipaphos auf Zypern – wurde von der späthellenistischen Zeit bis zur Mitte des 3. Jhs. u. Z. in mehreren zyprischen Münzemissionen dargestellt.

The important iconography charge in ancient coins, even more in Greek ancient coins, get relevance during warring periods when the meaning sense are not choose by chance. Abstract:

The relevance of iconography in Greek coinage is indisputable, as can be inferred from the data resulting from a study where we attempted to identify the meaning of different wine-related iconographies. Considering the fact that Greek coinage was widely divulged throughout the Mediterranean cultures, we must pay heed both to its economic and its propaganda value, as the latter was also one of the uses it had for the poleis. It is quite clear that Greek coins were full of economic, political and religious symbolism.

The reverse of the drachm has been inscribed with an otherwise unknown graffito which gives Alexander the royal title, Basileus. Comparisons are made with a range of other published examples of numismatic graffiti and arguments are presented to date the graffito on this drachm to the third century BC.
