A Lt C2 Tauriscan fractional coin from the Zvonimirovo-Veliko polje cemetery / Tomislav Bilić, Marko Dizdar

Abstract:

The authors discuss a recent find of a small Tauriscan silver coin with a depiction of a horse on both sides found in a Lt C2 (200-150 BC) grave at the Zvonimirovo - Veliko polje cemetery (north-west Croatia). This find is contextualised by a review of all known Tauriscan small silver coins with this unusual 'duplicate' depiction regardless of their type, a general discussion of the absolute chronology of Tauriscan coins of the Varaždin and Đurđevac type, as well as by a comparison with an almost contemporaneous north-central European typologically parallel coin type. The latter also occasioned a discussion of possible connections between these two occurrences of an identical typological solution. It is concluded that the Zvonimirovo coin was issued simultaneously with early Tauriscan tetradrachms, of which it is a fraction (1/24th). Its chronological position conforms to and, in its turn, supports, the revised, archaeologically corroborated absolute chronology of the earliest Tauriscan coin types. Finally, it might have exercised a certain influence upon the production of contemporaneous north-central European Roseldorf-Nĕmčice H obols.

Apollo Belenos on Norican and Tauriscan coins = Apolon Belenos na novcu Norika i Tauriska / Tomislav Bilić

Source:

Arheološki Vestnik 67 (2016) p. 381-388

Abstract:

The head on the obverse of Norican and Tauriscan coins is often casually identified as Apollo’s, mainly based on the god’s appearance on suggested prototypes for these coins. The issuing authorities most probably recognized the identity of the god portrayed on the coins they imitated, but they interpreted him as their ‘national’ god Belenos/Belinos. The identification of Apollo with this native deity is widespread throughout the Celtic world, with the most persuasive evidence coming from Noricum and the region of Aquileia. It is no wonder that the local Celtic minting authorities chose to portray their ‘national’ god on their coinage, since his worship is attested to in dedicatory inscriptions, sanctuaries, literary testimonies and, perhaps, plastic arts.

Der Goldfund von Saint-Louis bei Basel und ähnliche keltische Schatzfunde / von Andres Furger-Gunti

Zeitschrift für Schweizerische Archäologie und Kunstgeschichte 39 (1982) 1 p. 1-47

Abstract:

The first part deals with the «gold find of St. Louis» discovered in 1883 near Basel. The treasure dating from about 100 B.C., now widely dispersed, consisted of a bracelet, two fragments of tubular tores, small rings and at least 100 coins (all objects made of gold). The coins represent specimen of the Boii type, so-called 'Regenbogenschüsselchen' and globular staters, i.e. mostly foreign coins. The second part introduces further finds of gold-jewellery and foreign coins of similar types. The explanation given by the author for this group of finds spread over large parts of Central Europe — called ‘Finds of the St. Louis/Basel type’ - is that they are less the result of migration than offerings to Celtic deities. For that purpose the Celts obviously had, apart from jewellery, a predilection for selected, specific gold coins - not connected with the common Philippian stater - of a polished kind or depicting certain symbols known from Celtic mythology. Same as the find of St. Louis/Basel discovered in the marshy plain along the riverside of the Rhine the other finds often bear a relation with water.

Abstract:

In the last years numismatic research in Noric coinage has deeply changed, due to the evidence of the 1998 Enemonzo hoard, where forty Kugelreiter coins were found in a bronze situla, so we date the burial to 125 B.C.This evidence changed the approach to the chronology not only of one of the first issues, that means the Kugelreiter coins, but all the so-called Noric issues which belong to the first half of the second century B.C. and not in 70/60 B.C., as has been suggested. Also the distinction between the east and west Noric coins does not correspond to any clearly separable cultural groups of the late La Tène period of the southeast Alps. Starting from this consideration the chronology of all the so-called Noric coins and related archaeological items can be revised.

Abstract:

The author collected the evidence of all Celtic tetradrachms of the Kugelreiter type (the earliest tetradrachms attributed to the Celtic tribe of the Taurisci) with known provenance. On the basis of die studies, he established the relative sequence of their minting. Two distribution groups of tetradrachms of this type emerged (one centred in southeastern Austrian Carinthia (Karnten), the second in the area of northeastern Italy), indicating at least two production centres and also indicating chronological differences. The recent proposal of an absolute chronology by G. Gorini was also disputed.

Silver fractions of the 'Kugelreiter' tetradrachms / Peter Kos

Source:

Arheološki Vestnik 64 (2013) p. 353-266

Abstract:

The author has collected all the available documentation about the small Norican silver coins of the so-called Kugelreiter type. Two groups can be distinguished by the images on the reverse of the coins: on the reverse of the coins of the first group a rider is depicted, while a rosette is depicted on those of the second. The coins of the first group are characteristic primarily for the Carinthian region of southeastern Austria, and the coins of the second group for the region of Friuli, the Soča area and southwestern Carinthia. The minting of these small coins, which correspond to a quarter-drachm, can be placed in the middle of the 2nd century BC.

Abstract:

The author has collected all relevant documentation about the small silver Taurisci coins of the Đurđevac type. It was possible to prove that two groups of small change of this type had been minted. The first group has a so-called head of Apollo on the obverse, with a horse on the reverse, while the coins of the second group have a horse depicted on both sides. The coins correspond to one third of a drachm or one twelfth of the large silver coin of that type. Similarly to the tetradrachms of this type, the minting of their small change can be chronologically classified to the end of the 2nd century BC.

Abstract:

The author has collected all relevant documentation about thirteen small silver Taurisci coins of the Varaždin type. It was possible to assign them to three groups. The depiction of the horse on both sides of the coin is characteristic for all groups. It matches in all details the depictions of horses on tetradrachms. Small silver coins of the first two groups correspond to tetradrachms of the Varaždin A group, and coins of the third group to tetradrachms of the Varaždin B group. The provenance is known only for two coins of the third group (Celje and Györ). The coins correspond to one third of a drachm or one twelfth of the large silver coin of that type. Small silver coins of the Varaždin type were minted at the end of the first half of the 2nd century BC.

Abstract:

In the vicinity of the southern passage of the Mallnitzer Tauern pass a further offering site was discovered in 2011. The coinage consists of 16 oboli and an as of the Roman Republic. An older group of the small silver coins dates to the middle of the 2nd century BC. This is surprisingly early in comparison with the dating of all the coins from other offering sites on the Mallnitzer Tauern pass belonging to the end of the 2nd century BC. Some of the coins recovered in 2011 are of Norican, others of Tauriscan origin. One of the oboli is a Vindelican coin from the northern side of the Alps. The special importance of the Mallnitzer Tauern pass can probably be explained by gold and silver mining activities in the area just north of the pass during the Late La Tène and Roman period. The offered coins moreover prove a far distance trade between the South-eastern Alps and the modern Southern Bavaria.

The third and latest type of the Croatian Group of late Celtic coins was named after a hoard of approximately 400 tetradrachms made of relatively poor silver and found in 1887 at Šemovec, near Đurđevac. More than one hundred coins were acquired by the Zagreb Archaeological Museum. Several authors have written about the hoard and in 2009, a detailed article was published (including the tetradrachms kept in Budapest, London and Vienna) in the miscellanea dedicated to the eminent numismatist Simone Scheers. As for the dating, the beginning of minting of coins of the Đurđevac type can be set at the end of the 2nd century BC. The most recent, archaeologically based opinion however is that the earliest coins of the Đurđevac type ought to be dated to the early second half of the 2nd c. BC, i.e. the 140s, which is a taq for the appearance of Đurđevac coinage. The author also presents some old texts dealing with this hoard.

Abstract:

The so-called Potinklumpen, which was found in the city zone of Zurich in 1890, consists of about 17.200 to 18.000 late Latène potin coins which are melted together. Only two types of coins could be identified: potin coins of the Zurich type and of the «Sequani» type (group A). The spectrum of the types shows close parallels to that of the Late Latène settlement on the nearby Üetliberg. Therefore the «Potinklumpen» can be dated to around 100 B.C. Within the Turicum-project of the University of Bern, which is sponsered by the Swiss National Science Foundation, a number of scientific surveys could be realized in co-operation with the Swiss National Museum. They provide new knowledge concerning the composition, the reconstruction of the melting-process and the chronology. Several possibilities for interpretation are discussed on the basis of the reconstructed melting-process as well as on comparable finds.

Abstract:

The research on Iron Age coinage has been intensified in the last thirty years, but still a corpus of the Celtic coin finds from Switzerland is a desideratum. That is why the Swiss Inventory of Coin Finds has applied for project funds from the Swiss National Science Foundation to remedy the current state. In July 2007 the project ›Celtic Coin Finds from Switzerland – Catalogue and Analysis‹ took up its work. The primary aim is to register all Celtic coin finds from Switzerland and publish them; the second is to analyse the coin circulation.
