Abstract:

In 2008/2009, a rural sanctuary was almost completely excavated at 'Mureaux', in the commune of Authevernes (Eure, F), by the company Archéopole. It comprises a classic fanum, a ditched enclosure and several peripheral buildings. The origin of the site, which was eventually abandoned at the beginning of the 3rd c., dates from the reign of Claudius (41-54). A structure (1410) contained the remains of two young children and a double funeral gift, pointing to a foundation deposit. Thee fanum was built on an embankment containing a mix of coins (eight Celtic and one Roman) and LT d2 ceramics, as well as Augustan, Augusto-Tiberian and Claudian material. This mixing makes it possible to challenge some assumptions concerning the circulation of late Celtic coinage. The oldest pre-Roman remains seem to be contemporary with several structures which are difficult to interpret, among them an important pit (1406) containing artefacts (ceramics, coins, ‘fibulae’, animal bones) dating from LT d1a, suggesting early cult activity.

The use of Celtic and Roman coins in the territory of Poland at the turn of the era: in tandem or separately? : new finds, new evidence / Arkadiusz Dymowski

Abstract:

Recent years have brought plenty of reports about new discoveries made in central and southern Poland concerning locally issued Celtic coins in gold and Roman Republican silver coins. In some cases they have been found at the same sites. Therefore, the question is to what extent can we examine jointly the use of Celtic coinage and Roman silver coinage in the territories inhabited by the people of the Przeworsk culture and the Tyniec group during the final years of the 1st century BC and the early years of the 1st century AD. For the time being, very little is known on the subject. The only thing that can be said with a probability bordering on certainty is that in some parts of this region both types of coins were used during the same period. Additionally, the reservation that the phenomenon of the use of Celtic coins may have ended sooner and may have been more limited in terms of territory must be taken into account. Local coinage activity and import of Roman silver should be connected with some kind of Celtic activity. It is also not impossible that the influx of Republican denarii to the region to the north of the Carpathians and the Sudetes had more complex reasons. The more so because the local late Celtic coinage activity has been examined only within the Boii context, and that other elements may come into play in the territory lying to the north of the mountain ranges, like the activity of other Celtic tribes and of the Dacians. At present, there is little else to do but wait for new coin finds that could shed more light on the subject.

Abstract:

Silver was the most important form of money in the Iberian Peninsula between the 6th and 1st centuries B.C. For nearly three centuries, in Iberia there were only available scarce local coinages, imported coins and Hacksilber. During the Second Punic War, the monetary mass included abundant coinages from different authorities, mints and territories, series that were withdrawn from circulation at the beginning of the 2nd century B.C. When Hispania became a Roman province, a new and homogeneous silver currency of republican and indigenous denarii took form over the 2nd and 1st centuries. This paper deals with the chronology, production, metrology, authorities, circulation and function of the Iberian Peninsula silver coinages.

The production, supply and use of late Roman and early Byzantine copper coinage in the Eastern Empire / Peter Guest

Abstract:

Major campaigns of archaeological excavations at some of the largest and most important ancient cities around the Mediterranean have produced considerable quantities of late Roman and early Byzantine coins. These coins are a critical source of evidence for the cities’ histories and their fluctuating economic fortunes, yet relatively little attention has been paid to what they can tell us about the production of coinage or the functioning of the imperial monetary economy in Late Antiquity. The vast majority of these archaeologically recovered coins, known as site finds, are low-value bronze denominations that were the small change of the Roman currency system. This article aims to examine what archaeological assemblages of coins might tell us about the monetary economies of the cities where they are found, and to investigate if it is possible to identify whether the pool of circulating copper coinage was uniform across the empire or if different places and regions had access to different forms of currency. Ultimately, the goal is to attempt the reconstruction of small change production at the imperial mints in Late Antiquity and, by looking at coins as a means of exchange in the distribution of commodities, to examine what this tells us about the nature of the monetary economy of the late Roman and early Byzantine empire.

Abstract:

The bilingual inscription composed in Palmyra in 137 AD, known in the history of studies with different names (tariff, fiscal tax, municipal tariff, municipal law, tax law, etc...), has been the subject of wide researches for nearly one and a half century. During the last few years, the document has continued to attract scholars’ attention. The aim of this paper is to examine and discuss some of the latest publications. Some of them have brought new elements into the history of the epigraph, others have better focused on specific questions, at length debated. Claudia Perassi presents the new data (when, how and where) about the discovery of the inscription by the Russian prince Semyon SemyonovicˇAbamelek-Lazarev and the numismatic aspects of the ‘Tariff’ bases on the coins found during the Polish excavations held in Palmyra from 1959 to 2001. Alessandro Bona, starting from the text of the inscription about the chora surrounding the caravan town, draws the boundaries of the Palmyrene using the more or less recent archaeological and epigraphic findings and outlines its fertile landscape and agricultural active role.
