Abstract:

This paper describes a particular form of ceremonial accumulation and presentation of foodstuffs on Wallis Island in Western Polynesia. It questions the universality of hoarding and proposes a comparative approach to the association of the value with money, as is done in the West.

The stone money of Yap : a numismatic survey / Cora Lee C. Gillilland

Published:

Washington : Smithsonian Institution Press, 1975

Abstract:

This synopsis of the history and role of rai or stone money of Yap within the culture of the islands has been drawn from the accounts of early travelers, anthropologists, and administrators in the Western Pacific. The descriptions, quarrying practices, and shipping methods of these stones are discussed, as well as some of the "myths" that have grown up around these large primitive media of exchange. Early and more recent "exchange values" of the stones are traced within the islands, as well as in the international numismatic world. The location and pertinent data of 149 pieces of stone money removed from Yap and now in public and private collections throughout the world are provided within the table for reference and comparison of sizes, dates and history of accession. Sixty-four stones are illustrated, providing one of the most thorough studies of Yapese rai now available.

The shell money of the slave trade / Jan Hogendorn and Marion Johnson

Published:

Cambridge [etc.] : Cambridge University Press, 2003

Abstract:

This study examines the role of cowrie-shell money in West African trade, particularly the slave trade. The shells were carried from the Maldives to the Mediterranean by Arab traders for further transport across the Sahara, and to Europe by competing Portuguese, Dutch, English and French traders for onward transport to the West African coast. In Africa they served to purchase the slaves exported to the New World, as well as other less sinister exports. Over a large part of West Africa they became the regular market currency, but were severely devalued by the importation of thousands of tons of the cheaper Zanzibar cowries. Colonial governments disliked cowries because of the inflation and encouraged their replacement by low-value coins. They… disappeared almost totally, to re-appear during the depression of the 1930s, and have been found occasionally in the markets of remote frontier districts, avoiding exchange and currency control problems.

Forging history : spade-shaped currency bars, history and identity in central Norrland / Marta Lindeberg

Source:

Current Swedish Archaeology 18 (2010) p. 203-221

Abstract:

In central Norrland a large number of spade-shaped currency bars have been recovered. Currency bars have been produced since the introduction of iron technology in the late pre-Roman Iron Age, which roughly coincides with the introduction of agriculture. It is suggested that the shape of the bars is referential to the socketed axe, due to the importance of the latter during this period of change. The currency bars were therefore associated with a mythical history and local identity. The youngest 14C-date shows that the bars became part of narratives that remained relevant throughout much of the Iron Age, up until the Viking Age.
