Abstract:

This paper analyzes the bilingual dinars struck in the Maghreb and al-Andalus. The comparative study of their typologies and their contextualization within Umayyad oriental coins makes some general valuations possible, as well as the formulation of new hypotheses about the symbolism of the star, which is characteristic of the first issues of al-Andalus. Furthermore, the relation between the al-Andalus’ bilingual dinars and the capital status of Córdoba will also be examined.

Source:

Numisma 254 (2010) p. 61-83

Abstract:

This paper analyzes the religious and symbolic meanings and the legitimating role of the hexagram (or King Solomon’s Seal) appearing on a coin type from the Hammudí Caliph Idris [II], struck in 438/1046-1047 with a die bearing the mint name of al-Andalus. To do this, the Seal of Solomon is contextualized within Islamic iconographic symbols; its use in earlier, contemporary and later Islamic coins is also considered. As will be shown, the hexagram has a clear legitimating and propitiatory function attached to the coin issue itself as well as to the caliph.

Al-Qantara 25 (2004) 1 p. 203-231

Abstract:

This article analyzes the coins issued by 'Alï b. Hammüd, the first caliph of the Hammüdi dynasty in al-Andalus, in the year 408/1017-1018. Special attention has been given to the analysis of monetary legends and their relation with different aspects of legitimation of the dynasty. The images of fish depicted in one of the series of coins has been studied and a number of hypotheses have been suggested, to provide a deeper knowledge of Hammüdi numismatic. Finally, the article includes a catalogue of the coins decorated with fish figures from that year.

Abstract:

Huntington. The storage and organization of the collections are also discussed, with information on accessing the coins for research. Recently the HSA withdrew all their coins and sold the entire collection, Islamic and non-Islamic, at auction, but the buyers did not want the Islamic portion and sold them to a good friend of the ANS who has placed the coins on deposit there with a promise of future donation. As this is written, the coins are being inventoried and returned to their storage boxes and trays.

Abstract:

Archaeological excavations on the western outskirts of Córdoba, have unearthed neighborhoods including necropolis mosques, country houses, palaces and groups of dewllings. Development probably began in the 9th century with the period of peak splendour occurring in the 10th century under the Caliphates of Abd al-Rahman III y al-Hakam II, although the civil war which broke out at the beginning of the 11th century would destroy practically all of them. Several coin hoards and isolated finds have appeared, all from the Caliphate period including an assemblage of false coins of the period.

Abstract:

Recent archaeological excavations in Cordova have thrown new light on the first emirate lands  outlying Qurtuba, known as Saqunda. The site presents a clear end date, supported by the records, since the famous riots of 203 H./818 A.D. brought about the destruction and abandonment of the area. This site has produced plentiful numismatic material, which has been archaeologically documented. Here we will show the provisional findings of part of the monetary sample collected, chiefly fulus.

Abstract:

This paper reviews and actualise the finds of Fatimí coins in the territories of Al-Andalus. The North-African Caliphate of the Fatimí dynasty was the main rival of the Andalusians Omeyas. Nevertheless, the Fatimí currency appears with relative frequency in Al-Andalus, sometimes in remote form and more frequently composing currency hoards in which the Fatimí coins appears with the Omeya ones in very variable percentages. Rarely the assemblies are exclusively composed by Fatimí currency. The analysis of these finds allows to observe a different circulatory behaviour according to chronological periods and geographical areas. In addition, we observe noticeable differences among the currency of gold and the silver one.

During the excavations in the archaeological site of Besgastri (Cehegín, Murcia) some metallic remains were discovered inside a ceramic vessel. This small treasure, dated to the 11 th century, consists of a few pieces of jewelry and 237 silver coins, many of these being small fragmented pieces. Most of the coins are North African, produced by the Fatimids, the enemy dynasty of the Spanish Umayyads. This archaeological find from Begastri is at the moment the biggest hidden Fatimid silver hoard found in Sarq al-Andalus.

Abstract:

The archaeological fieldwork carried out in El Tolmo de Minateda (Hellín, Albacete) has made it possible to recover the traces of an Islamic and Visigoth town that was abandoned during the second half of the 9th century AC. In the archaeological contexts of use, abandonment and destruction of the emiral town, a series of coins both Islamic and of earlier periods have been found. The contextualization of the numismatic record permits a comprehensive vision of the monetary circulation in this emiral town and allows us to offer some further views of historical, numismatic and archaeological character.

Abstract:

We concentrate on a Qur'ânic quotation used as a numismatic slogan byAlmohads, the dinasty who ruled North Africa, and Islamic Spain and Portugal during AC 12th and 13th centuries. We revise Western translations of the sentence, both as a part of the Qur'ânic text and as a numismatic legend. Then we analyze the sentence according to the information given by exegetical and lexicographical medieval Arabic-Islamic sources, and propose a key for its understanding. Our conclusions evolve around 1) patterns of behaviour among specialised groups of translators, 2) ambiguity and interpretation in the history of the contacts between Arabic and Western languages, and 3) how translators use previous translations and their own expectations as relevant tools.

Source:

Al-Qantara 36 (2015) 1 p. 69-106

Abstract:

During the first half of the fifth/eleventh century, the caliphal minting practices of the previous century gradually changed, and by the end of this period, a very different monetary system had been established. While in the fourth/tenth century, dinars and dirhams were regularly minted in al-Andalus, by the middle of the next century the number of mints had multiplied and each regional power possessed its own model for the emission of coins. Moreover, the quality of gold and silver coins decreased considerably. The aim of this paper is to perform a comparative analysis of the monetary production developed in the first half of the fifth/eleventh century among the different dynasties of al-Andalus in order to establish the chronological phases that mark the shift from one model of minting to others.

Abstract:

Through the analysis of textual, iconographic and monetary documents preserved in the Royal Academy of History, the Historical Archives of the University of Seville and the Archive of the Spanish University Foundation, Fund Campomanes, we reconstruct the genesis and development of the first draft publication of a catalog of Arab coi-nage in Spain, Discurso y Tablas de Medallas Árabes, conducted by Miguel de Casiri along with Pedro Rodríguez de Campomanes and Martin de Ulloa, under the auspices of the Royal Academy of History. Both materials and numismatic analysis of the parts contained in this publication are presented here unedited, as well as the subsequent influ-ence of the same.

Abstract:

The Archaeological Museum of Cordoba preserves three large sets of Islamic medieval coins which were minted in al-Andalus before AH 202/AD 817 and which are probably part of a huge hoard found in Villaviciosa (Cordoba) and known of since the third decade of the 20th century. Such a large set of coins, most of them in a particularly good state, provides strong archaeological evidence to sustain that the Umayyad Emirate of al-Andalus undertook the issuing of coins as a legal resource for the market purposes and the politics of taxes. This happened from the times of ‘Abd al-Ra_mān I, i.e. from the very beginnings of the Emirate, in spite of what has been claimed both inmedieval and contemporary historiography.

Al-Qantara 27 (2006) 2 p. 477-527

Abstract:

First, we examine some unregistered Almohad and Post-Almohad coins, and discuss the attribution or reading of some others. As a result a discussion of a hypothesis on Idris al-Ma'mun's silver coins is offered and some new items are added to the numismatic corpus of Western Islam. This work leads us to a general overview of the Islamic discourse prevailing in Islamic Spain and North Africa after the so-called Almohad revolution. Considering this discourse as a dynamic work in progress, we focus on a number of issues: (1) the Qur'ānic aim of eternal life as a touchstone in the Almohad system of ideas, (2) the issue whether salvation is possible without actual human guides, (3) the evolution from negative to affirmative theology, (4) the ties binding the numismatic discourse and the Almohad and Post-Almohad ruling classes.

Rebuilding the contexts of the Andalusi epigraphic legacy : 'the Friend of God' in the Almoravid numismatic discourse / Salvador Peña Martín, Miguel Vega Martín

Trans 10 (2006) p. 73-83

Abstract:

The Arabic phrase 'Wali Allah' (the Friend of God) is included among the epigraphic legends displayed in the coins issued by the Almoravids (Murabitun) during the first decades of the 12th century AC (6th century AH), in al-Andalus (Islamic Spain) and North Africa. Although the sequence, normally referred to the Almoravid Emir, 'Ali ibn Yusuf, poses no problems of translation in its lexical and syntactic levels, its actual intended meaning within the Almoravid legitimacy discourse reveals itself as a challenge, mostly because of its ambiguity. This paper offers a reconstruction of the different contexts involved in the phrase.

Abstract:

The Berber dynasty of the Zirids, the rulers of the Taifa kingdom of Granada (Spain), issued several series of dirhams that reveal a prominent feature —the lack of any metrological pattern. We first catalogue and describe examples of such pieces housed in different museums in southern Spain and in some private collections, and consequently stress the fact that the Zirids never issued real coins. This claim is viewed from a broader double perspective: the numismatic history of Western Islam and the common space of the Islamic medieval world. As a result of our study, we maintain that the historian and the archaeologist must distinguish between two different policies in numismatic issues, depending on whether the implementation of metrological patterns allows us to speak of real coins or not. Of the latter, the numismatic issues of the «party-kings» of the Taifa-states are an outstanding instance.

Numisma 245 (Enero-Diciembre 2001) p. 139-154

Abstract:

In this article we present a monetary hoard found in Écija (Seville, Spain), composed of four dinars minted in the Iberian Peninsula under the rule of the Umayyad Governors. All of them belong to the Latin Epigraphic Group, with a Latin legend on both sides. They are traditionally known as indictional dinars since they present the indiction as the central legend on the reverse. Of the coins studied, only one belongs to the X Indiction, equivalent to the year 93 H. (711-712); the remainder were struck during the XI Indiction, year 94 H. (712-713). In this study, aside from classifying the coins, we have summarised the scarce bibliography about this topic, offering a new perspective and focus on this particular Moslem-Arabic coinage.

Arqueología y Territorio Medieval 11 (2004) 1 p. 79-113

Abstract:

Starting from the documentation of a stratigraphic sequence in the town of Guadalajara, a number of dates corresponding to materials from the different excavated contexts have been established. There have been identified even four activity phases for the Islamic period including silos, wells or industrial installations as well as significant lots of materials. Among them, there are a group of 37 pieces (coins or weights), small in there size, whith irregular shapes and weighing no more than 1,2 grm. These pieces contain legends in Arabic epigraphy such as 'Justice comes from God' and 'Abdallah ibn Muhammad'. This sequence is the starting point to recognize the defining characteristics of the different phases which enable us to determine chronologies from some sites belonging to the 'Frontera Media' (Middle Border) and which in general are not stratified. Furthermore, the knowledge of the Islamic Guadalajara has been increased thanks to the documentation of a continued occupation which begins in the Emiral time in a town whose material culture was hardly known.

Al-Andalus Magreb 10 (2002-2003) p. 293-316

Abstract:

Abstract:

An important numismatic hoard was found in Priego de Cordoba (Spain) in 1959 and is now kept in the Archaeological Museum of Cordoba, where it remains unrestored and unclassified. It contains several thousand Almohad silver pieces, struck during the 12th and 13th centuries AD, and offers an extraordinary data base for the study of dynastic, urban, artistic, economic and ideological aspects of Islamic Spain. Some religious implications of Almohad coins, considered as icons and pieces of the legitimacy discourse in a theocratic state, are explored in this paper.

Abstract:

The study of four examples of square silver coins permits us to add four new unregistered items to the numismatic catalogues of the Almohad, Mu’minid, Marinid and Nasrid issues. On the other hand, the four mintmarks under examination show the range of problems posed by these epigraphs on Almohad and post-Almohad coins: (1) ambiguous reading, (2) different names of places involved, (3) unknown names of places, and (4) an unexpected place name on a particular coin within its historical framework.

Mainake 25 (2003) p. 393-401

Abstract:

Antiquitas 17 (2005) p. 143-147

Abstract:

A huge hoard of Almohad silver coins was found in Priego de Cardaba (Spain) some decades ago and is now kept in the Archeological Museum of Cardaba. Among its thousands of pieces there is one, a half dirham, which bears the name of Priego as minting place. Alter some considerations on the relevance of Priego during the Almohad period, we conclude with a linguistic analysis of the Arabic writing of the name. Our conclusion is that the alternative spellings for Priego reflect the difficulties to reproduce the pre-Arabic name 'Pego''.
