Abstract:

We present the first elementary analyses ever carried out using the LA-ICP-MS method on the monetary issues considered as the first local strikes of North-Western India. These coins predating the punch-marked coins are represented by fractions of bent bars, blanks and an ingot and come from the Pakistani hoard of Shaikhan Dehri. All of them are made up of copper-silver alloys made from a unique stock of silver and most of them belong to the same source because they contain the same fineness of silver. Moreover when comparing the characteristic trace elements of silver metal it appears that the precious metal used for the issues attested in the Shaikhan Dehri is close to the silver used by the Mauryas one or two centuries later to mint their first Series of silver punch-marked coins.
