Abstract:

The concept of ‘regionalization’ appears frequently in historical studies to describe the different forms of ‘fragmentation’ which are connected with the progressive disappearance of the political, institutional, economic, social and cultural structures which had characterized the Late Roman Empire. Theme of this article is an analysis of the process through which the Late Antique monetary system, based in the 4th century CE on a common ‘monetary area’ extended to the entire Empire, split in different ‘regional systems’, clearly recognizable since the end of the 6th and the 7th century CE. Only gold  urrency is here taken into consideration, both because it circulated on a parallel and independent circuit, and because the high economic and symbolic value of this metal attracted towards it a great deal of attention, both from ancient authors (such as Procopius) and from modern historians (such as Henri Pirenne).

Abstract:

The Byzantine presence in Hispania has important implications for the production and circulation of currency in those territories that are linked to the Mediterranean again. This paper discusses the changes that affect special copper-bronze coin of small value, Nummus, comparing the situation with other regions of southern Hispanic peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Special attention is paid to the presence of Nummi coined southern Hispania, in urban areas clearly influenced by Byzantine monetary model.

Abstract:

The paper analyses an old find of coins at Vada Volaterrana, a statio with a thermal complex and horrea on the via Aurelia. The coins, a siliqua of Julius Nepos, a solidus of Theodoric, an Ostrogothic quarter of follis and a piece of 30 nummi of Heraclius, testify the continued activity of the harbour of Volaterrae into the first half of the VII century AD. Starting from this context, the monetary circulation in Tuscia of Early Middle Ages is discussed.

Abstract:

Analysis of coin finds in an area of NE. England employs and modifies methods developed for Iron-age and Romano-British assemblages alongside quantitative analysis developed specifically for Anglo-Saxon coinages. The results illustrate that observed patterns of coin loss do represent the overall coin loss for the study area, and sites can be confidently compared to each other and the region as a whole. The role and function of coinage apparently changes dramatically over the period from a medium of long-distance trade in the early period to a cash currency by the Viking takeover of York. A review of ‘productive sites’ suggests that these sites can only be adequately interpreted through analysis of their assemblages against the background of the regional circulation of coinage and artefacts.
