The iconography of early Anglo-Saxon coinage : sixth to eighth centuries / Anna Gannon

Published:

Oxford : Oxford University Press, 2003

Abstract:

This is the first scholarly art-historical appraisal of Anglo-Saxon coinage from its inception in the late sixth century to Offa's second reform of the penny c. 792. Outside numismatic circles, this material has largely been ignored because of its complexity, yet artistically this is the most vibrant period of English coinage, with die-cutters showing flair and innovation and employing hundreds of different designs in their work. By analysing the iconography of the early coinage, this book intends to introduce its legacy to a wide audience." "Anna Gannon divides the designs of the coins into four main categories: busts (including attributes and drapery), human figures, animals, and geometrical patterns, presenting prototypes, sources of the repertoire and parallels with contemporary visual arts for each motif. The comparisons demonstrate the central role of coins in the eclectic visual culture of the time, with the advantages of official sanctioning and wide circulation to support and diffuse new ideas and images. The sources of the motifs clarify the relationship between the many designs of the complex Secondary phase (c. 710-50). Contemporary literature and theological writings often offer the key to the interpretation of motifs, hinting at a universal preoccupation with religious themes.

Units of account in gold and silver in seventh-century England : 'scillingas', 'sceattas' and 'poningas' / John Hines

Source:

Antiquaries Journal 90 (2010) p 153–173

Abstract:

The seventh-century vernacular laws from the kingdoms of Kent and Wessex specify fines or compensation payments using units of account that have given us familiar terms in the numismatics of this period: scillingas (shillings), sceattas and pæningas (pennies). In light of the use of cognate words in Gothic and Old High German, and the comparative values given in the Old English law-codes themselves and in the fifth-century Theodosian Code, it is suggested that these represent a regular and durable bimetallic system correlating values in gold and silver. This proposition is examined further against the evidence of weighing-sets from sixth- and early seventh-century Anglo-Saxon graves, and it is argued that the results give greater and more precise meaning to the use of gold and silver in Early Anglo-Saxon artefacts, such as the greatgold buckle from Mound 1 at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk.

Abstract:

This volume provides a detailed account of the Anglo-Saxon and other associated coins in the collection of Uppsala University, which had a leading role in the use of numismatics in historical research and teaching in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The 741 coins catalogued and illustrated here derive mostly from Swedish hoards of the 18th and 19th centuries. As well as the late Anglo-Saxon coins, there are also significant groups of Hiberno-Norse and Scandinavian imitations and Norman coins. The introduction describes the history of the collection from its origins, and its important role in historical research and teaching in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Anglo-Saxon law and numismatics : a reassessment in the light of Patrick Wormald's 'The making of English law' / Elina Screen

Abstract:

Since Michael Dolley and Michael Metcalf established that Edgar introduced a system of periodic recoinages in c.973, the numismatic evidence for the thoroughness of the recoinages has offered historians valuable evidence for the effectiveness of Anglo-Saxon government. In Simon Keynes’s words, ‘the reformed system of coinage as a whole demonstrates the remarkable degree of sophistication attained in one area of royal government in the late tenth century, and thus suggests to the historian what he can reasonably expect in others’. However, the lines from king to mint are hard to trace in practice. The very limited written evidence touching on the coinage gives only a fractured picture of its administration. Together with Roger of Wendover’s thirteenth-century reference to Edgar’s recoinage, the clauses in Athelstan’s Grately code (II Athelstan), Edgar’s Andover code on the one coinage (II-III Edgar), /Ethelred’s coinage laws (TV /Ethelred’, 5-9) and the punishments for forgers laid down in his Wantage code (III /Ethelred, 8, 16), form almost the entire written evidence for the administration of the coinage.2 References to money and coins in use are relatively more frequent in the written sources, such as the charters, but here too, the references to transac- tions in the laws have been of particular interest given their evidence for royal concern on the matter.3 Understanding the laws is thus a key step in understanding the written evidence for the administration and the use of the coinage, and illuminating these processes in practice.
