Minting in Vandal North Africa : coins of the Vandal period in the Coin Cabinet of Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum / Guido M. Berndt, Roland Steinacher

Early Medieval Europe 16 (2008) 3 p. 252-298

Abstract:

This paper offers a re-examination of some problems regarding the coinage of Vandal North Africa. The coinage of this barbarian successor state is one of the first non-imperial coinages in the Mediterranean world of the fifth and sixth centuries. Based on the fine collection in the Coin Cabinet of Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum, this article questions the chronology of the various issues and monetary relations between the denominations under the Vandal kings, especially after the reign of Gunthamund (484–96). The Vandals needed and created a solid financial system. In terms of political, administrative and economic structures they tried to integrate their realm into the changing world of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages.

From Carthage to the Holy Land : the 'Palm Tree' ‘nummus’ / Gabriela Bijovsky

Abstract:

Tiny, ill-struck copper coins depicting a palm tree are the most common type of coins from Carthage discovered in excavations and hoards from Israel. This article studies their typology and chronology within the framework of other nummi types minted in that city during the Byzantine period.

Abstract:

The hoard of bronze coins discovered in a part of the paved courtyard of the synagogue at Capharnaüm (excavations of Corbo / Loffreda 1972) indicates a significant importance for reconstructing the structure of coinage in Palestine, especially in Upper Galilee, at the end of the 5th century. The study brings forth very particularly a pattern of coins irregular in style and manufacture. The variety of these types, without each prototype being identifiable in certain cases, and their relative abundance allow us to formulate the hypothesis that these so-called imitations rather played a structural role in the coin circulation at the end of the century. They were not struck like counterfeit coins, but rather like emergency emissions responding to a demand for small change during a period where the official coinage of Antioch and Alexandria was perhaps insufficient. Besides, in the case of circulation as well as hoarding, the distinction between official money and imitations at that period would not have been evident.

Copper-based alloys of the fifth century : a comparison of Carthage under Vandalic rule, with other mints / C.E. King, D.M. Metcalf, J.P. Northover

Revue Numismatique 6e sér. 34 (1992) p. 54-76, pl. 11-13

Abstract:

This paper is a preliminary investigation of the alloy content of late Roman, Vandalic, and Ostrogothic bronze coins (analysed by electron microprobe) minted in the fifth and sixth centuries A.D. The results show that tin contents were significantly higher in the West in coins of Rome and Carthage while eastern and Ostrogothic nummi (and post-reform pentanummia) were composed of a poor quality copper alloy with high lead contents. Larger denominations minted after the Anasta- sian reform and by the Vandals, on the other hand, are almost pure copper.
