Abstract:

We discuss a series of small bronze fractions from the Visigoth period that provide an important addition to the corpus of known examples. This is is followed by an analysis of their stratigraphic contexts and the changing associations between the deposits are set within their overall archaeological framework. Finally we offer a reconstruction of the metrology and metallurgy of the series.

Absent coinage : archaeological contexts and tremisses on the central Iberian Peninsula in the 7th and 8th centuries AD

Source:

Medieval Archaeology 60 (2016) 1 p. 27-56

Abstract:

Analysing monetary circulation in the Visigothic period on the central Iberian Peninsula has traditionally drawn on physical data, such as the gradual decline in weight of the tremisses, their lower gold assay, and the apparent reduction of money in circulation. Such changes are argued to signal a major crisis in the Visigothic state. In recent years, increasing numbers of coin finds from the Iberian Peninsula have appeared on the antiquities market, leading to a significant increase in the numbers of known tremisses — the only coin minted by the Visigothic state in the 7th and 8th centuries. Few finds have been discussed in terms of their archaeological and stratigraphic context. This paper responds by examining known and new coin finds retrieved from the vicinity of the capital of Toledo, giving close consideration to their archaeological and stratigraphic context. By analysing these finds, new perspectives are gained on patterns of monetary circulation in the 7th to 8th centuries.

Abstract:

The evolution of the monetary system between the seventh eighth centuries, was characterized by the perseverance of several processes: reducing the mass of gold which served as a stock, reduced weight, and especially less gold content of coins. Along with this, the gradual disintegration of the tax system, always fragile and closely linked to the elements that control and organize the superstructure of the regnum Visigothorum by a complex set of interdependent relationships. However, the currency kept some of the features that characterized the Empire: the nature of taxation, and commercial features, especially concentrated in urban areas.

Abstract:

Visigothic times the monetary productive organization is articulated around several provinces. This is based also on urban mints, and reduced production in a large number of officinae, especially in the northern of Iberian Peninsula. associated with the difficulty of taxation arrangements in some areas. We can distinguish the existence of a fiscal structure which relies largely peripheral in the establishment of a policy agreement between the Rex and Potentiores, with a link in small settlements, which differs from the situation in areas of greater state control, as is in the Betica province or Carthaginensis.

Abstract:

The archaeological fieldwork carried out in El Tolmo de Minateda (Hellín, Albacete) has made possible to recover the traces of a Visigothic town erected at the end of the 6th century or in the beginning of the 7th century. The numismatic material recovered on levels of use and abandonment in this town is mainly composed by copper coinage from later Roman Empire, and by golden tremisses of lowgrade metal coined by the Visigothic kingdom. The stratigraphical contexts of this coins have allowed to raise some questions about the presence and use of the numerary in the Visigothic period.

La moneda del reino visigodo de Toledo : ¿ por qué? ¿para quién? / Fernando López Sánchez

Abstract:

The minting of Visigothic coins between the years 584 and 711/2 was made possible by the collaboration between the Toledo monarchy and the various cities of its kingdom. It is precisely the lack of typological variety in Visigothic coin series that makes them a reliable guide as to the main objectives pursued by the issuing power, and the means used to achieve these. Visigothic coins indicate certain journeys on the part of the kings and a large number of military operations, and in certain periods (the reigns of Egica and Witiza) there are even suggestions of the true nature of the discord among the nobles which affected the kingdom. Visigothic coins were, it is suggested, largely the result of the maintaining of royal garrisons in locations in the Iberian peninsula and the Gaul that were strategic or in danger. It is also argued that a Byzantine presence in Spain survived right up to the year 711 (in Cartagena), and that the Swabian kingdom was not absorbed in the year 585, but integrated into the Toledo monarchy.

Abstract:

There is no numismatic evidence of an imperial recognition of the Visigothic monarchy on the part of the emperors Theodosius I or Honorius between 381 and 423. The first part of this article looks at this lack of a privileged relationship of the Imperial house with the Visigoths through coinage and monetary evidences. Neither does the numismatic or monetary materials available to us support that the Visigoths were recognized by the central imperial power during the following years (423-439). Nevertheless, the marriage in Constantinople in 437 of the son of Galla Placidia, Valentinian III (425-455) with Licinia Eudoxia, the daughter of Theodosius II, and his subsequent return to Italy as an emperor ready to govern, does seem to have prompted the most important Roman-Visigoth treaty that had been signed up to that point (439). This treaty had a numismatic reflection on the Visigothic monarchy of Tolosa of a similar importance to that which the treaty between Theodoric the Amal and Anastasius in the year 497 held for the Ostrogothic coin issues of the first half of the sixth century. Thus, the second section of this paper, ‘Theodosius II and the creation of a privileged relationship with the Visigoths’, is partly based on the historical context of these years, partly sustained on the study of the imitation coins minted in Tolosa during the reign of Valentinian III. These Visigothic coin series are compared with the Amalic issues of the reigns of Anastasius, Baduila/Totila and Teia. The monetary functioning of the Hunnic monarchy of Ruga, Bleda and Attila is also compared to that of the Visigothic monarchy of Tolosa as both of these barbarian monarchies seem to have redistributed part of the imperial subsidies that they received among their own client kingdoms. Our study concludes with the claim that the Visigothic monarchy in the mid-V century was a multi-ethnic commonwealth of its own and that it was Theodosius II and Constantinople who supervised events in the West at this time.

Abstract:

Since 1999 we are working on a research project about the so called ‘Provincial Forum of Augusta Emerita’. The project deals with the realisation of archaeological interventions in the various lots where remains of public architecture linked with this monumental ensemble have been documented. One of these interventions has been realised in a lot where remains of the so called ‘Temple of the Holguín-Street’ appeared some years ago. During the works on the same site has been brough to light a treasure of twenty gold coins from the time of Leovigild hidden under the walls of a room which in late Antiquity reused the southern side of the Roman temple podium.

Research into Visigothic coinage, from the earliest studies through the middle of the 20th century, is considered from an historiographical perspective. The principal works containing Visigothic coins are analysed, in particular those of A. Agustin, J.L. Velázquez, padre Florez, A. Heiss, and F. Mateu y Llopis, culminating in the corpus published by C.G. Miles in 1952. The important contributions of scholars such as A. Delgado, P. Beltrán, and W. Reinhart, amongst others, are also highlighted.

Abstract:

Both the period fakes which were made at the time when the Visigoth coinage was in circulation and the many later imitations are analyzed. It can be observed that the period fakes are relatively few in the corpus of Visigoth coins, probably indicating that falsification of coins was not a widespread phenomenon as would be the actual manipulation of the metal for other purposes and it against the later that the laws of the time are directed. By contrast modern currency counterfeiting of Visigoth coinage are abundant and we can establish a chronological evolution, from the inventions of the eighteenth century to the latest contemporary and increasingly accurate copies.

Abstract:

Although found in 1972 this hoard of 41 late Roman solidi and 36 Visigothic tremisses has never been properly published. This paper presents the first catalogue of these coins which will be analysed in depth by the author in a forthcoming work. The hoard is believed to have being concealed around the middle of sixth century, probably at the time of the war between Agila and Athanagild between 552 and 555.

Abstract:

The final period of the Visigoth Kingdom of Toledo is analyzed from the reign of Wamba in the context of his various attempts at strengthening the monarchy against other powers. This fact has its obvious reflection in the coinage, because unlike the previous period, it very consciously harks back to Byzantine models by iconographically adopting the imperial insignia of power, nevertheless, the very importance given to the ritual anointing of royalty based on the biblical model is clearly pointing to the increasingly important role of the Church in the election of the king in a progressively weakened monarchy. Also, the later years of regnum, the events that took place after the death of Witiza, are examined by contrasting the limited and problematic literary evidence with the information provided by the coins of the time.

Déus i mites de l'antiguitat : l'evidència de la moneda d'Hispània / Marta Campo ... [et al.]. - Barcelona : MNAC, 2012. - P. 84-135

Abstract:

Abstract:

This article tries to contribute to the knowledge of visighotic coinage, through monetary sources. The beginning are the coins that were coined in Hispania by Visigoths; these were of roman system, fit to reform of Constantine. Its juridical-administrative organisation is also Roman and its types born of imitation of imperial art. This imitation is followed to Leovigild, when the properly national coinage is established on the base of Roman provinces.

Abstract:

The main object of this paper is to conduct an analysis of legislative sources from the Visigothic era relating to coinage. This is a novel approach, proposing new angles and useful hypotheses both for research into legislative sources and for the history of coinage. The authors have conducted a detailed study of the different monetary references cited in the Liber Iudiciorum, interpreting their meaning and significance and assessing their value for a fuller understanding of the coinage. They have also analysed the only laws in the Liber relating directly to coinage, in particular those referring to fraud. Finally, they posit the probable existence of legislation intended to specify the characteristics of particular coinage issues, through mandata, from the central authority to the provincial authorities, which would have passed them on to the bodies responsible for the actual minting, presumably goldsmiths.
