Coin hoard from a fourth-century CE shipwreck off the Carmel coast / Donald T. Ariel

Abstract:

A total of 75 coins, dated to a quite restricted period within the fourth century CE, were most probably part of a hoard. All the coins are copper folles denomination; most of them derive from western mints, particularly Rome, as would be expected for the first quarter of the fourth century CE in the southern Levant. This hoard conforms to the currency inland.

Abstract:

Found in a place called Čentur between 1934 and 1962, one or more hoards were hidden along the edge of a plateau (Mali Čentur) not far from Via Annia, a route from Aquileia to Istria. Thee story of the discovery has many dark sides and inconsistencies, probably destined to remain unresolved for lack of contemporaneous documentation and because the circumstances of the discovery were passed down mostly orally. After having outlined the history of the discovery, the paper aims to determine how many coins are now available and how many are irretrievably lost, to examine the relation between folles (ante and post), the role of coinage of Magnentius and the contribution of the various mints, in primis Aquileia. The cause of the hide can be attributed more to a tax levvy – made probably in the coastal towns of Trieste, Pola, Parenzo or in villages of Istria – rather than an act of war for which there is no trace in the sources and in the archaeological finds in situ.

Abstract:

Work on a lot of 28 reformed antoniniani (Aurelian to Diocletian / Maximian), which were bought as a »hoard from Metz« by the RGZM at the beginning of the 1950ies and which could form a fraction of the hoard of some 17,000 coins from Basse-Rentgen (dép. Moselle, found in 1896), has demonstrated the delayed depositing of these coins in the North-West Provinces of the Roman Empire. The periods of hoarding of 281-282 and 293 in Gaul and 293-296 in Britain are connected with no known supra-regional event. The make-up of the hoards in question also show that they were not formed as a result of changes in coinage, i. e. the withdrawal of official Gallic Empire coins in Gaul around 283 or the monetary reform of Diocletian in 294. Since without exception they have reformed antoniniani from the mint at Lyon as their latest issues, it is rather the extensive deviations in the striking and distribution of the reformed antoniniani which in the first place influenced the moment of their closure. In the currency of northern Gaul during the late 3rd century, where antoniniani of Gallienus or Claudius Gothicus (Divo Claudio) and copies of coins of the Gallic Empire dominated, any addition of reformed antoniniani must have improved the hoarding of the better, newly struck coins. The exact events which prevented the retrieval of the hoards analysed are not known. The theory of barbarian raids remains less convincing, since the hoards developing contemporarily were hidden somewhat widely distributed between the Loire and the Rhine.

Abstract:

Discovered by F. Loridant during excavations of the Terre à trois coins, this treasure trove — the 13th genuine one found in Bavay — contains 1290 Antoninians, plus a few broken or chipped others, from Elagabalus to Trebonian Gallus, minted in Rome and in Antioch, among which could be found some interesting variants. The map displaying the location of treasure troves with a same terminusm shows a definite concentration in the North and East of Gaul, but it may be possible that their burying took place later than year 253 and should be postponed to the period when Germanic invasions were threatening, about year 256.

Abstract:

Probably discovered off the coasts of Sicily in the late 1950s, the “Partinico hoard” is one of the most spectacular finds of gold coins from the Lower Empire. This new attempt to reconstitute the hoard, based on unpublished documentation, lists 174 specimens, including 35 gold multiples and 139 aurei, spanning the period from AD 276/277 to 308. The content shows that the treasure was amassed through regular withdrawal of currency in circulation but also, more importantly, through successive donativa. The study of this hoard offers a fundamental contribution to knowledge of issues of gold coins early in Maxentius’s reign.

Abstract:

Two coin hoards closing c. 303 AD have been discovered during archaeological excavations on the site of a Roman villa in Magny-Cours (F, Nièvre). In spite of their identical tpq, the two deposits display a different facies. The first one, except for an isolated aurelianus, consists of 496 heavy nummi minted after Diocletian’s monetary reform, a lot assembled at an early date as it is composed for 80% of coins minted 294-297 AD. The second hoard, more important in volume as it counts 832 coins, is made up of two differents lots, aureliani mixed up with a few antoniniani (466 ex.) and, again, heavy nummi at 1/32 lb. (366 ex.). The two hoards have been dismantled and the coins removed following stratigraphic layers, a process which sheds interesting light on their assemblage. This doublecontainer hoard belongs to the rare class of deposits closing under the 1rst Tetrarchy: this document of 1,329 coins offers the opportunity to reexamine issues such as the running of the Lyons mint from its reopening in 274 to the reform of 294 AD, and the question of the first series of nummi at the mints of London, the ‘continental mint’, Lyons and Treveri.

Abstract:

The Lava gold hoard, the first pieces of which were recovered from the sea in 1957, was catalogued first in 1958 (41 specimens) and then in 1980 (87 specimens). The current inventory numbers 450 specimens, of which a significant proportion was unpublished before the discovery of this spectacular treasure. This hoard, which contains laureate and radiate aurei, gold multiples and non-currency gold, immobilised by a shipwreck in AD 272/273, gives a cross-section of what a high-ranking Roman official might receive in imperial liberalities and the way they were distributed.

The solidus hoard of Casa delle vestali in context / Svante Fischer

Source:

Opuscula 7 (2014) p. 107-127

Abstract:

This paper discusses the context of a Late Roman solidus hoard found in the Casa delle Vestali on the Forum Romanum in the City of Rome. The hoard consists of 397 solidi, Late Roman gold coins. Most of the hoard consists of uncirculated solidi struck in the name of the western Roman emperor Procopius Anthemius (AD 467-472). By means of situating the hoard within the context of the reign of Anthemius and the collapse of the western Roman Empire, the aim of this paper is to discern if the coins in the Vestal hoard can be related to other contemporary coin hoards by means of numismatic typology, which could add information as to why Anthemius’ reign is considered such an unmitigated failure and why the Empire collapsed soon after his murder. The author examines the composition of the hoard and compares the content to other contemporary solidus hoards in the Mediterranean, Belgium, Poland and Scandinavia. The author argues that the comparison shows that the Vestal hoard is not part of a larger network but that the hoard constitutes the remains of an isolated occurrence – as initially suggested by its unusual composition and location.

Une trouvaille d’'argentei' de la première Tétrarchie provenant du Proche-Orient / Georges Gautier

Revue Numismatique 169 (2012) p. 225-259, pl. 1-10

Abstract:

For the first time a hoard of tetrarchic argentei from the Near East is here studied as a whole. Consisting of 230 official coins and a contemporary imitation, the hoard is mostly made up of argentei struck at Nicomedia and Antioch, including several unpublished specimens. On this basis, the author attempts to reconstruct the sequence of the silver coinage of these two mints, in particular that of Nicomedia. The hoard covers approximately a five-year period, from 294 until 298 A. D. It obviously contains portions of donativa, possibly received by a member of Galerius’s army after the successful campaign against the Sassanians. The hoard also contains  the first imitation of a tetrarchic silver coin produced in the eastern part of the Empire.

Abstract:

The treasure of Saint-Germain-de-Varreville (Manche) contains 14 528 coins dating from 310-348 A.D., which were found in a closed and undisturbed ceramic container buried before 348 and the reforms of Constance II and Constant. The number and the preservation of the coins are exceptional. The examination of this site by the numismatic service of the Centre Michel de Boüard-CRAHAM hoped to understand the owner’s behaviour and discover the different types of coins and their deposit or gradual withdrawal, in bulk or in bags, over time.

Le trésor double de Tourouvre (dep. Orne) : bijoux et monnaies romaines de Domitien à Victorin / Pierre-Marie Guihard ; avec les contrib. d'Amélie Marie et Guy Leclerc

Source:

Jahrbuch des Römisch-Germanischen Zentralmuseums Mainz 57 (2010) p. 151-210

Abstract:

During an excavation in 2010 in Tourouvre (dép. Orne) a mixed hoard of coins  and jewelry came to light. Two thirds of the coins, which had been  deposited in two glass bottles, were struck between 238 and 270. The final third is characterized by emissions of the period before Gordian III, the  earliest of which go back to the Flavians. The distribution of the production periods shows a preponderance of antoniniani of Gallienus and Postumus (260-269). The coin make-up points to a complicated hoarding process and, at the same time, allows the rapid spread of the Italian issues in Gaul during the first years of the Gallic Empire (260- 274) to be observed. This phenomenon suggests a military cause, most probably in connection with the  subsequent wars which in 266 and 267 involved Gallienus in the centre of the empire and Postumus in the west. Since no Gallic mint struck coinage for Gallienus, the flow of coin cannot just have served the payment of wages to the army, but also must be the result of the legitimate emperor’s attempts to hinder the extension of the power-base of the usurper. The range of coins in both bottles end with the same Trier emission of Victorinus. They thus comply with a group of depots with a terminus post quem of 270 which covers north-western Gaul and a part of Britannia’s coast. The reasons for this hiding  remain in the dark. However, the frequency of the coin-hoards hidden in the region under Victorinus indicates a period of unrest – unrest which perhaps was triggered by a series of incursions by the Germans.

Abstract:

A large hoard of 2109 silver billon Antoniniani was discovered in 1996 during a salvage excavation at the site of the former Arab village of Quleh (قولة), about 5 km northeast of the city of Lod (map ref. 19658–61/66030–60). A hoard containing late Republican 'denarii' from Morgantina (Sicily) / D. Alex Walthall

American Journal of Numismatics 2nd ser. 25 (2013) p. 171-178, pl. 32

Abstract:

This brief note offers a detailed account of a hoard containing Late Republican denarii that was recovered in 1959, during controlled excavations at the archaeological site of Morgantina (Sicily). Although this hoard has received prior mention by members of the American Excavations at Morgantina (Sjöqvist 1960: 130; Morgantina Studies II: 175), there has been no full account either of its contents or of its archaeological context. This note is the first of several forthcoming numismatic supplements, which are intended to give more extensive treatment to the coin hoards recovered by the American Excavations at Morgantina between 1955 and the present.
