Chronology of Sabina’s coinage at the Roman mint / Richard Abdy

Source:

Revue Numismatique 171 (2014) p. 73-91

Abstract:

This paper presents an attempt to construct a chronology for Sabina’s coinage for the revision to the typology of the Roman Imperial Coinage for Hadrian (RIC II. 2). Sabina was omitted from the coinage during the first half of the reign, while imperial ladies such as Plotina and Matidia continued to be so honoured by Hadrian. The situation is completely reversed around the time of the emperor’s adoption of the title pater patriae in AD 128. A regular coinage in Sabina’s name in gold, silver and copper alloy then continues until the end of the reign. Thus for the years AD 128-138 we can trace the development of the empress coinage combining the evolving obverse legend, the changing reverse types and the progress of hairstyle fashion. Comparison to the hairstyles on dated provincial coinage helps to propose a series for the mint of Rome with relatively close dating.

Abstract:

This article uses a die study to establish a firm chronology for the 'aurei' of the last six years of Trajan's reign. In addition to clarifying the dates of the various coin types, the die analysis makes specific contributions to our understanding of the poorly documented history of the period and to our comprehension ot he internal workings of the Roman mint. The study builds on and extends an earlier investigation of the chronology of the later gold coinage of Trajan, which covered the period AD 112-114, to the death of the emporer in AD 117, while also adding new mate

Abstract:

The paper presents a die-study of the gold coins issued by Philip I, Otacilia Severa and Philip II, based on a corpus of 236 specimens. The 23 specimens with findspots are discussed, as is the structure of issues and the metrology of the coinage. The paper shows that the volume of production was similar to that under Trajan, Hadrian and Antoninus Pius, although Philip’s coins are much rarer as finds than 2nd century issues.

Autour des travaux d’Hercule : Postume et Gallien / Michel Christol

Abstract:

After first attempting to eliminate Postumus in AD 261, Gallienus reopened war with him in AD 266. But the Gothic invasion forced Gallienus to the Balkans in AD 267, and he was not able to confront Postumus again. In his struggles with the barbarians, Gallienus counted on the support of Hercules, a traditional theme which he had already employed after AD 260. During this time period, Postumus set up his ruling power and took advantage of Aureolus’ revolt. Starting from this moment, Hercules is gradually highlighted in the coinage of Postumus. The series depicting the labours of Hercules in AD 268 reveals his growing ambitions.

The 'consecratio' coins for Commodus : a reconsideration / Liesbeth Claes

Source:

Revue Belge de Numismatique 158 (2012) p. 207-224

Abstract:

This article proposes a review of the consecratio coins for Commodus issued shortly after this emperor’s death. Most standard numismatic catalogues list these coins as being of doubtful authenticity. However, a typological and stylistic analysis of the several assembled specimens of the type suggests that it was issued by an eastern mint, most likely Alexandria. Furthermore, the die axis and the message content of the specimens suggest that the coins were issued in 195 AD, indicating that the emission of the coins was related to the retrospective adoption of Septimius Severus into the Antonine House.

L'empereur Silbannacus : un second antoninien / Sylviane Estiot

Revue Numismatique 151 (1995) p. 105-117, pl. 15-16

Abstract:

A second antoninianus in the name of Silbannacus confirms and authentifies the so far unique coin kept in the British Museum, which bears the effigy of this otherwise unknown third-century emperor. Indeed, no epigraphic or historic ancient source makes any reference to a Silbannacus. The new antoninianus has been struck from the same obverse die as the first, but the reverse displays a new type, which bears a close relation to another brief reign, that of Aemilian. It is now possible to date Silbannacus' usurpation : the autumn of 253 AD, and to identify the mint which issued his coinage : not a temporary mint on the Rhine frontier, but the mint of Rome itself.

Nero is often considered as the Roman heir of a dionysiac tendency, which is opposed to the apollonian conception Augustus had of civilisation. Analysing the numismatic testimonies allows us to rethink this artificial antagonism and to focus on the Augustan inheritance in Nero's principate.

Abstract:

This paper examines the relationship between the brothers Geta and Caracalla, and the possible motivations behind its extremely violent culmination. Literary and epigraphic sources offer an ambiguous image, in which Geta is commonly depicted as a shadow-figure, but occasionally arises as a serious rival of Caracalla. A quantitative numismatic study is then used to trace the relative importance of Geta through time. It is argued that two political factions had been active from very early in Septimius’ reign, with the two brothers as their respective figureheads. Power politics seemed to have played a significant role in their deadly struggle.

Abstract:

Certain aurei and denarii forming part of the so-called ‘legionary series’ of Mark Antony (32/1 BCE) allow us to learn more about a little-known victory of Mark Antony at the beginning of 31 BCE. Also, two denariiminted in an Antonine style in the year 165/6 CE lead us to the conclusion that Lucius Verus personally took part in the capture of Ctesiphon. The elite military units of these two Roman generals were honored with special coin issues.

Abstract:

It is almost thirty years since Pierre Bastien’s assistant, Hélène Huvelin, produced the last major corpus of the gold 'aurei' of Carausius. At least three more coins have been discovered since 1985 and this article provides an updated catalogue for the 26 coins for which we have full records. A revised chronology for the coins is also provided, often with the gold coins being linked to silver and bronze issues. There is also a consideration of the mints, weights, die analysis and find-spots, hence summarising our present knowledge of the gold coinage of Carausius.

Schweizerische Numismatische Rundschau 91 (2012) p. 41-57, pl. 5-6

Abstract:

This essay is devoted to the study of a series of Roman gold coins, struck under Augustus, with the type of a heifer on the reverse. The authors aimed at making a corpus of the few surviving examples, which allows to identify various types, and a number of different dies. Those suggest that the emission was of importance, despite the great rarity of the coins nowadays (only 21 examples listed for all 5 varieties). The authors also tried to summarise the different hypotheses made as to the date and place of emission. The type is believed to depict the bronze sculptures by Myron, and ancient epigrams relating to it are quoted.

American Journal of Numismatics 2nd ser. 26 (2014) p. 223-244

Abstract:

The pre-reform CONCORDIA MILITVM 'antoniniani' of Maximianus are often miscatalogued for print and online sales. This is due in part to several errata in RIC (Vol. 5, part 2). Two hundred and seventy antoniniani were studied in order to establish an accurate list of mint marks, obverse legends, and reverse legend divisions. As the antoniniani were studied, there emerged a pattern in the reverse legend division and mint marks pointing to the order of mint output. This pattern implies that the opening of the mint of Heraclea is likely to have taken place in spring of AD 293 or thereabouts. Also, it is ventured that the CONCORDIA MILITVM antoninianus might have been minted at Siscia, a city not mentioned in RIC. It is further suggested that the CONCORDIA MILITVM coinage might have served as a testing ground for the impending coinage reform of Diocletian. The type continued to be minted virtually unchanged after the reform and could have provided a model for the standardization of the coinage.
