Abstract:

This work focuses on on a group of Constantine's coins issued by the mint of 'Ticinum' (315-316 A.D.) in which the emperor appears sitting and holding the zodiac wheel. In these coin types it is possible to see an assimilation of Constantine to deities holding the zodiac circle in the Roman iconographic tradition, i.e. Aion and Sol. Indeed, based on the two sequences of zodiac signs visible on coins, we can argue the will to put in connection these iconographic solutions with the dies natalis of Constantine himself, shown as the restorer of the saeculum aureum and of the temporum felicitas after the ‘tyranny’ of Maxentius. These evidences denote the Constantine’s inclination towards astrology, at a time when many Roman emperors show themselves openly opposed to this matter.

Abstract:

Revue  Numismatique 166 (2010) p. 435-445

Abstract:

One of the authors of the present article has recently made a systematic study of a rare type of portrait that shows the emperor holding weapons that turn out to be plumbatae (also known as mattiobarbuli – javelins with lead weights) that are usually described in numismatic literature as arrows. Numismatics provides the earliest evidence of this type of projectile that first appears on the coinage of Emperor Probus in 279 and seemed to appear for the last time on coins of Severus II between 306-307. The re-examination of a sole surviving half-nummus of Maxentius, minted in Rome between 310-311 where Maxentius is shown as a Mattiobarbulus, pushes back the terminus date. This discovery has prompted a review of busts that depict lead-weighted javelins (plumbatae) on coinage issued for victories and periodic jubilees, to determine the nature of the army units thus being honored (the Illyrian legions) during the conflicts that marked the end of the Tetrarchy.

A note on Late Roman art: the provincial origins of camp gate and baldachin iconography on the late imperial coinage / Nathan T. Elkins

American Journal of Numismatics 2nd ser. 25 (2013) p. 283-302, pl. 33-35

Abstract:

Some of the most common images on late Roman imperial coins are the socalled camp gate types that first appeared under Diocletian and which were repeated throughout the fourth and fifth centuries ad. This late imperial iconography also served as the inspiration for coin designs in early medieval Europe. Scholarship on the camp gate images has focused on the places that the gates make reference to. Did they signify a specific fortress, a city, a generic camp, the Castra Praetoria? Instead, this article addresses the origins of the camp gate iconography through the lens of theories on late Roman art. Scholars have remarked on the increased influence of provincial and plebeian forms and styles in late Roman art. As the chronologies and production contexts for coins are well understood, it is possible to trace the introduction of the iconography and its spread. Practical application of theory suggests that imperial die engravers were influenced by regional traditions of city gates that appeared on the coins of the Balkans and northwestern Asia Minor in preceding decades. Practical conditions were responsible for local images becoming late imperial art. The provincial origin of baldachin types with spirally-fluted

columns on late imperial coins is also explored.

Revue Numismatique 171 (2014) p. 317-339

Abstract:

On the basis of a large documentation, a corpus of the argentei produced at Trier and Lyons between July and December 307 AD is presented. The various questions concerning the presence of architectural particularities and astral symbols on the reverses of many of these coins are here studied in depth for the first time. Several explanations and interpretations are tentatively put forward in this respect.

Abstract:

Roman coinage shows a remarkable abundance of foreigners. From the republic until the end of the empire non-Romans are a integral part of the iconographic repertoire of this medium. The meaning of these representations and the notion of the foreigner are quite literally coined by the historical context of any given time: While the moneyers of the republic try promote the achievements of their family and thereby try to secure their own political future, the emperors use the image of the foreigner to spread more general, programmatic statements, often corroborated by the accompanying legends. The image of foreigners in Roman coinage was virtually never guarded by any ethnographic interest, but the changing types of representation serve the purpose to mediate the contemporary way of Roman authority. Thus the value of those images as realistic representations is of minor importance. By means of a diachronic examination of the image of foreigners on coinage combined with their illustrative legends a picture of the change of Roman imperial mentality emerges.

Jahrbuch des Römisch-Germanischen Zentralmuseums Mainz 55 (2008) 2 p. 429-447

Abstract:

From the late 3rd century onwards, as well as the usual topoi of triumphal scenes in Roman art, a new, slightly modified motif appears: A high Roman authority, mostly the Emperor or a deity, drags behind him a small, bonded captive by the hair. Possible predecessors of this motif and the need to create a new way of expressing a triumphal motive are, however, open to debate. The present study shows that clear predecessors of this motif are lacking in Roman art. A comparison with contemporary literary sources, though, makes it probable that this new motif was most certainly created for a particular purpose in a specific, historical context: To express Roman Imperial control and authority in a period, when non-Roman elements were increasingly beginning to influence the affairs of the Empire.

Abstract:

This article focuses on the specificities of numismatic evidence to understand the ‘damnatio memoriae’ procedure, from the Julio-Claudians to the 3rd century. A critical analysis of the principal works published on this subject obliges us to clearly distinguish between coins erased after an official procedure and the others, erased for various reasons. This paper puts special emphasis on explaining why these erased coins after an official procedure are so rare. Many reasons can be mentioned: the economic function of coins; the fact that this kind of evidence doesn’t lend itself to a spectacular ceremony, etc. All things considered, coins — compared to inscriptions or papyrus for example — cannot be considered by historians as major evidence to highlight the ‘damnatio memoriae procedure’.

Impact of empire ; vol. 15

Published:

Leiden [etc.] : Brill, 2012

Abstract:

Current scholarship on Roman imperial representation addresses both the ways in which individual rulers presented themselves to their subjects and how particular aspects of imperial representation developed over time. This book combines these two approaches. It examines the diachronic development of the representation of Roman imperial power as a whole in one medium over a longer period of time. Through a quantitative and qualitative analysis of coin types issued between A.D. 193 and 284, patterns in the representation of third-century Roman emperors on imperial coinage are made visible. The result is a new perspective on the development of imperial ideology in times of crisis.

Abstract:

The presented analysis of the Caracalla and Geta portraits on Roman Imperial coins results in the definition of nine pictorial types for Caracalla and seven for his younger brother Geta, in both cases spanning a period between their enthronement and their assassination. They meet the criteria of official pictorial types such as clear differentiation, the existence of numerous copies and chronologically limited occurrence. The analysis of the coins provides two new portrait types: Caracalla as Cesar (type 1) with short straight hair and child-like physiognomy, and Geta as Augustus (type 7) with a long forked beard and clear resemblance to his father Septimius Severus. During the lifetime of the father the portraits of the two brothers were equalised to an exchangeable extent. Then, Geta type 7 was used by Geta and his followers in the struggle for power between the two brothers.

Abstract:

The roman emperor Marcus Aurelius had coins issued with his portrait for over four decades, mostly dated through his titles, such as the consulate and the tribunicia potestas. In this article a portrait sequence of the coins over this full period is established and documented with two examples each year on different denominations. This portrait sequence is analysed with respect to clearly divisible, datable portrait types and supported by a considerable number of pictures. Seven portrait types are deined, primarily based on the shape of the head and the form of the beard. Further characteristics, such as the shape of the bust or heads looking left or right, seem to have been employed independently of the individual types of portrait. This methodology is recommended for further portrait studies of roman emperors and their families, as the large number of surviving portraits on coins and the per se oficial character of Roman coins as a primary imperial propaganda medium allow insights beyond the traditional portrait studies in sculpture.

Proceedings of the XIVth International Numismatic Congress, Glasgow 2009. I / ed. by Nicholas Holmes. - Glasgow : International Numismatic Council. 2011. – P. 933-940, pl. 1-2

Abstract:

Analysing the ‘male couples’ represented on Imperial coinage, we try to verify if there is any recurring iconography (dimensions, position, gesture, clothing…) linked to the political status of each character, especially in the direction of displaying the Emperor’s intentions of succession. We will compare our iconographies to similar schemes on Greek coins, but above all on Republican ones, considering also ‘male-female couples’, to try to find the possible way to interpret this kind of link between two individuals represented both as portraits or as standing figures. As in many other cases, an important moment to be examined is the Augustan era, as Augustus has derived from Republican period signs and symbols that he adapts to the new reality of Principatus, creating schemes that become iconographic topoi, that will be continuing to be used throughout the Roman Empire.

Revue Numismatique 160 (2004) p. 119-154, pl. 10-11

Abstract:

Careful examination of the zodiac aureus of Hadrian in the historical context of its issuing allows us to appreciate the intervention of the emperors in the sphere of the Roman temporal imagination. The figure which holds the zodiac and bears in its left hand a globe surmounted by a phenix is neither Aion, nor Magnus Annus, nor Annus, nor the emperor himself, as has been supposed. Rather, it is the « Golden Eternity » - SAECfulum] AVRfeum], as written in the inscription - inaugurated by Hadrian when the empire had recovered its stability. Our study shows how the word saeculum had come to mean « eternity ». We note that to the spatial equivalence established between the empire and the Cosmos from the reign of Trajan was added, with the aureus of 121, a temporal equivalence which likened the eternity of Rome no longer to the succession of lineary centuries but to the endless progression of cosmic cycles. Furthermore, from the references to the phénix and the use of the word Aion - which had a different meaning in this period for « Hellenes » and Christians - we gain an insight into the religious and ideological undercurrents of Hadrian's choice of coinage. In their laudations of the Cosmos the sophists of the Antonine period continually compared its eternity to that of Roman rule, exhorting the inhabitants of the empire to respect in their civil relations the values of orderliness and concord bound up with the Law of cosmic harmony which insured the eternity of the Universe. Viewed in this way, it is impossible to think that the choice of this coinage had anything at all to do with pedantry.

American Journal of Numismatics 2nd ser. 21 (2009) p. 123-150

Abstract:

This paper explores the evidence for Severus Alexander’s conversion of the 'Elagabalium' into a temple to Jupiter Ultor. Close analysis of the numismatic material calls into question modern ideas about the way in which legend and image interacted on Roman coinage, particularly on Jovian types. A new understanding of how Roman coinage communicated the increasing alignment between the emperor and Jupiter is employed to gain a better understanding of the numismatic evidence for the temple of Jupiter Ultor.

Imaging the Golden Age : the coinage of Antoninus Pius / Clare Rowan

Source:

Papers of the British School at Rome 81 (2013) p. 211-246

Abstract:

Given that few ancient accounts of the reign of Antoninus Pius survive from antiquity, other monuments, in particular coinage, become important in reconstructing his reign. In this article coin hoards are used to reconstruct a quantitative understanding of Pius's numismatic imagery. It is clear from the results that the three different coin metals (gold, silver and aes) differed in their messages: while gold coinage emphasized the imperial family and the concept of pietas, silver and aes coinage focused on the emperor's concern for the grain supply (annona). This broad understanding of Pius's numismatic image is supplemented by more detailed analysis of coin iconography in particular years. The liberalitas and Britannia series of Pius are explored in depth. The study highlights coinage's role as one imperial monument among many, contributing to the communication of imperial ideologies. It is clear that the image of Pius as a virtuous emperor ruling in a ‘Golden Age’ was one cultivated by the imperial bureaucracy, and so it is not surprising that the concept features in the preserved texts. The long-term impact of Pius's coinage is also considered. In the absence of significant quantities of aes coinage struck by the Severans, the coinage of Pius continued to be of importance in many regions throughout the third century, conveying impressions of Empire among users well after the emperor's death.

The public image of the Severan women / by Clare Rowan

Abstract:

Coinage remains one of the best resources from which to gain an insight into the public image of empresses in the Roman Empire. This article employs a quantitative approach to the coinage of the Severan women, utilizing coin hoards to gain an idea of the frequency of particular coin types. The result offers a nuanced and contextual assessment of the differing public images of the Severan empresses and their role within wider Severan ideology. Evidence is presented to suggest that in this period there was one workshop at the mint dedicated to striking coins for the empresses. The Severan women played a key connective role in the dynasty, a position communicated publicly through their respective numismatic images. By examining the dynasty as a whole, subtle changes in image from empress to empress and from reign to reign can be identified. During the reign of Elagabalus, the divergence in imagery between Julia Soaemias and Julia Maesa is so great that we can perhaps see the influence of these women on their own numismatic image.
