The main purpose of this class is to provide each student with the opportunity to fully explore the links between museums and information technology. Digital technologies continue to proliferate and grow in importance in our daily lives. Within the museum walls, digital media provides new modalities for exhibition content and narrative, and new approaches to managing old and new types of collections assets. Within and outside the museum's walls, digital technologies lift the contents of museums from their original media, whether successfully or not. By so doing, museums transcend their physical space and become instantiated in a variety of new media outlets, whether Facebook or Second Life. This course digs into the changing nature of museums in a century dominated by a major transformative shift in how we generate data, information and knowledge built around technology.
