Whitefish is in the MOUNTAIN time zone - 2 hours behind Michigan, 1 hour behind Illinois
The Brush Creek fire west of Whitefish directly impacts us; as of 8/16 Star Meadows is closed and under a mandatory evacuation order. It looks like the fire is within a mile of our turnaround point! Weather conditions seem to be improving, and the fire is 65% contained, so keep yer fingers crossed!
Update 11:30 AM August 16 - up to 75% contained...
Update 8:30 AM August 20 - good news, the Brush Creek fire is now 85% contained, and the Star Meadows evacuation order has been lifted. The weather has much improved for firefighting, I guess - cooler, chance of rain, etc.
There's one other fire that can affect us, though not on ride day - the Black Cat fire is just north of Missoula, and is very active and only minimally contained. As a result, the main road from Missoula to Kalispell and Whitefish has been intermittently closed - the east edge of the fire is basically at the road. There's at least one other major route up to Whitefish, but it's quite a bit longer (and goes near the Jocko Lakes fire!).
A couple of our folks are heading out there early, and may call back with some more info, so stay tuned.
InciWeb Flathead National Forest region fire information - Inciweb has a Google Earth feed, so you can have fire info (text based, not a fire map) show up in Google Earth.
Looks like Saturday will be really nice - high in the low 80s and mostly clear. There's less smoke in the weather forecast, too.
