Ph.D. Thesis :

Homeostatic Complex Systems

Advisor: Prof. Robert Ian (Bob) McKay

This thesis focuses on bio-inspired innate intelligence based on Daisyworld, a mathematical model of the Gaia hypothesis, to develop autonomous systems capable of life-long self-maintenance, self-organization, and self-regulation through homeostasis. The thesis incorporates complexity features into our system, such as non-linearity, small-world (Watts-Strogatz, Newman-Watts, and Smallest-world models), adaptive,  scale-free, and evolutionary (replicator-mutator) properties on Coupled Map Lattices to demonstrate autonomy. The thesis employs mathematical modeling, computer simulations, and extensive experiments to explore a wide range of complex system features and demonstrate collective intelligence or emergent artificial intelligence from a complex systems perspective.
