HGST Summer Internship Call

A summer internship is currently available at HGST, a Western Digital company working with Dr. Derek Stewart on computational materials simulations relevant for non-volatile memory research.  The project focuses on using first principles simulations to optimize materials and interfaces relevant for resistive and magnetic non-volatile memory systems.  The specific focus area will depend on the background of the intern.  Areas of interest include vacancy and interstitial formation in oxides, diffusion of vacancies and dopants in materials, proximity induced magnetism, and using impurities to increasing the spin-hall angle in metals.

The candidate should be currently enrolled in a graduate program working towards a PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or Chemistry with a strong background in theoretical solid-state physics.  Prior experience using density functional theory approaches to model materials (in particular oxides and magnetic materials) and fluency in common programming and scripting languages (Fortran, C/C++, Python, etc) is highly desirable.  Experience performing nudged elastic band calculations and electronic transport approaches (Boltzmann and non-equilibrium Green function techniques) would be a considerable plus. The successful candidate should also have strong communication skills.  The position is available during the summer of 2015 and the specific duration of the internship is negotiable.  Review of the applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.  Informal enquiries on the position are welcome; please send an email to Dr. Derek Stewart (  For the full application, please send a cover letter, CV and current transcript to the above email address.  Please also include the name, email address, and affiliation of at least three references.

About HGST

Location: HGST Research Center, San Jose, CA

Drawing on the heritage of invention that first introduced the hard disk drive, HGST (formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies) is a new type of storage company for a new world where ever-increasing amounts of content are being generated from cloud services, Internet content providers, social networks, mobile devices, Big Data and enterprise business transactions.  HGST is a wholly owned and independently operated subsidiary of Western Digital Corporation, marketing and selling its leading storage portfolio around the world. HGST continues to strategically invest in high-growth and emerging technology segments, attracting and retaining the industry's best talent, and expanding research and innovative product development.

HGST R&D innovates across a great breadth of data storage technologies to enable customized industry-leading solutions in the enterprise HDD and SSD markets. We are a global company with a worldwide R&D team collaborating across ten sites in the U.S. and seven overseas, some of which have been providing HDD solutions for over 55 years. Our HDD research teams are world renown as the inventors of the first commercial magnetic hard disk drive and as technical innovators for more than five decades. We are vertically integrated in HDD technologies—working on the basic mathematics, engineering, materials and physics of the components, the firmware and mechanical design to integrate them into products, and the manufacturing, testing and qualification of the components and products to deliver solutions to our customers.
