James Madison University has created a program in which students teach other students about things they are passionate about. It has caused a bit of controversy about what makes a class worth a student’s time. Mainly this line, "[the student] thinks classes taught by students would be a “notch above” a traditional class. She believes that students are more passionate about their subject than most teachers and are able to approach students better."
I love this resource! there are over 800 front pages from today’s newspapers in one spot. I like to pull up this website when there is a major event and analyze POV, perspective, audience, etc. My students are always amazed to see the different ways each paper handles the same event.
I am so torn over the issue of teaching fiction vs. nonfiction. I love to read; reading is what got me into English in the first place.
When planning for teaching fiction I first ask myself, “what is it about this text that I can get my students to love?” When planning to tean a nonfiction text I first ask myself, “what is it about this text that won’t easily understand?” This difference does not exist because I could not get my students love a piece of nonfiction it is exists because it is how I was taught as a student of English literature. My five years of schooling were not focused on the merit of, and how to teach, documents from a historical perspective, or how to find the meaning behind a set of instructions to a vacuum.
I see the value in nonfiction. I teach American Literature and AP Language and Composition, so nonfiction is a big part of my day. The problem is nonfiction is not what I love and I am worried that it shows while I am teaching.
