It always blows my mind when students say that they cannot read my handwriting when I write in cursive on the board. I have also proctored the SATs and the students always stress the most over the section that asks them to write a statement in cursive. I guess it will not be changing any time soon.
A few D.C. traditional public and charter schools offer cursive; most others don’t. In Montgomery County, cursive is part of the curriculum, school officials said, but in most cases, it is up to educators to make the time to teach it.

The Virginia Department of Education mandates that third-graders should be able to read and write legibly in cursive. Although cursive is technically part of the curriculum in Fairfax County, the reality is that it’s not widely taught, teachers said.
In honor of National Poetry Month I am adding excerpts from poems to my door every day. I am also giving extra credit out to those students who can show me a poem if I ask them “do you have a poem in your pocket" at any random point this month.

When I heard this, I thought I’d make an point to do this. It’s easily one of the best bits of advice I’ve heard in my fifty years. It’s boggling how quickly and how thoroughly this works. Yes, I’ve been trying to do this too. It helps when other people recommend books you wouldn’t choose for yourself.
We should do a non-fiction book recommendation trade. have found that it is difficult to get high-level readers in high school to read outside their comfort zone; however, low-level readers are adventurous and genuinely want to know your opinion about what book to read next.
