DESiGN 2015‎ > ‎

The “DESiGN - Developing Environmental Sustainability in Greater Norfolk” programme is being offered by Marshall Scholars, with the support of Norfolk County Council. Marshall Scholars are postgraduate students from America sponsored for study in the United Kingdom by the UK Government. Scholars are selected based on their academic merit, leadership potential, and ambassadorial potential.

26-28 June, Norfolk students will be joined by Marshall Scholars for a fun weekend of environmental learning.

The weekend will focus on three themes:

  • Skill-Building. Activities around teambuilding, leadership, communication, and campaigning.
  • Masters Workshops. Exciting sessions teaching students about environmental arts, sciences, and policy.
  • Action Planning. Students will leave DESIGN with a proposal for an environmental community action campaign they would like to carry out. Students will be supported by Marshall Scholar mentors throughout their campaigns.

Skill-building and team-building sessions will include:

  • A rock, paper, scissors cheerleading championship.
  • A cup-building competition featuring dysfunctional teams.
  • A challenge to communicate without any gestures, facial expressions, or tones of voice.

Workshops will include:

  • Nature Photo Scavenger Hunt. A trek through Holt Hall's grounds to find hidden natural treasures and explore how photography can be used in environmental education.
  • Environmental Poetry Writing. A look at famous literature and poetry about nature and the environment with an actor and spoken word poet, and a chance to write your own piece about what nature, the environment, and/or climate change means to you.
  • And many more!

Community action plans might involve:

  • A graphic design competition in their high school for posters encouraging students to turn off the lights and taps when not in use;
  • A visit to their primary school to do arts and crafts projects using recycled materials; or
  • A campaign to their local government to enhance support for community recycling schemes.

Additional activities will include:

  • Gardening in Holt Holl's beautiful grounds.
  • A campfire with guitar music and roasted marshmallows.
  • A talent show featuring local and international talent.
