4. Human Causes of Desertification

While the biophysical causes are persuasive, they can only tell a partial and long term picture. More immediate causes of desertification are evidenced and attributed to no other than humans. While it is known that human activities have great impact on changing the surface of the biosphere post industrialization, what is becoming more apparent is how the rate of affection is currently causing long-term changes to the systems of the biosphere.  This essay argues that two main human activities are cause to desertification in the Sahel: land/soil degradation and soil erosion. As with the biophysical causes, let us examine each individually beginning with land/soil degradation.
