Why I loathe rugby
I know that a love of the oval ball is supposedly in the blood of of every Welshman but that's not necessarily the case with Cardiffians and certainly not in mine. The above may have something to do with it. Throughout junior school I developed a passion for football, making the school team in standard 3 & feeling immensely proud to be chosen as captain in standard 4. It therefore came as something of a blow to discover that football would not be permitted in high school until reaching the third form. Because, according to our stereotypical games teacher, "football was a game for poofs". Despite my disappointment, I gave it my best shot due to my sporty inclination and as a result I was selected to represent the school B team as a centre. Although I've never had the physique for rugby I was however able to run. At some stage during my debut I received the ball around the half way line & decided to make a dash for it. I put my head down and somehow or other managed to weave my way through half of the opposing team to score an impressive try. Sadly, this was to remain the peak of my rugby playing days. Word reached our games master of my spectacular try & I was swiftly selected for the next A-team fixture. By this time I'd revised my opinion of the game & started to attend Cardiff games. Tickets were cheaper than CCFC & there was no threat of violence. I also enjoyed the fact that access to the players was easy, obtaining the autographs of Welsh 'heroes' such as Terry Holmes & Gareth Davies on numerous occasions. I also went to a number of Welsh internationals at the Arms Park by purchasing tickets through school. Unfortunately I soon realised that I was out of my depth in the A team & began to struggle enormously. There was a lot of peer pressure & the games became less enjoyable every week. I remember the Nazi games teacher bawling us out after one defeat & publicly announcing that my place in particular was 'in dire jeopardy'. Shortly afterwards, to my immense relief, I was dropped back down to the B team. Back at my own level & with the pressure lifted I started to enjoy myself again until one fateful games lesson. Split into pairs, I neglected to tuck my head to the side during tackling practice and consequenty received the knee of one of my best friends, running at full pelt, directly to my face. I remember blacking out momentarily before moving my tongue and discovering most of my teeth, hanging by threads, at the back of my mouth. Thanks to the skill of the dental surgeons at UHW I luckily retained all of my teeth. They were put back into place and, I think, stitched before a clear, plastic gumshield was cemented to my teeth. I had to wear this for approx 6 months & I was advised that if it came loose I would have to wear the silver, metal version as illustrated above. To my enormous relief the plastic version held firm. Indeed so firm that it was removed with great difficulty when the time finally came. Nowadays, with rap culture, the metal version would probably be looked upon as pretty cool! After my treatment at the UHW finally ended I was presented with the dental plaster cast & both gum shields as a memento. My fondness for rugby had completely evaporated & I was excused from taking part during games lessons. Whenever rugby was on the agenda I was allowed to go jogging instead and as I was permitted to select a partner to keep me company my popularity rose greatly amongst the slackers.
