"Stunning!

I first caught this Russian film which is a collection of
five 20 minutes individual stories about Mowgli (though told
chronologically and with recurring characters it works effortlessly as one
feature film) on HBO as an adolescent. Of course my only knowledge, at the
time, of Mowgli was from the Disney animated film The Jungle Book.
I was
stunned by the mature storytelling and violent elements in the film which
is a less cutesy and more faithful adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's original
stories. The film doesn't boast the bloated budget of most typical animated
features and the creative team compensate for this with stylish, though
unlife like, animation and brilliant use of a silhouette-esc style. I
highly recommend anyone who loved The Jungle Book as a child to hunt down
this magnificent companion film..."

USNA GRAPHIC NOVEL released July 2012

Just Released: July 2012
Full Length Graphic Novel
available on iTunes

 USNA a Graphic NOVEL
PROJECT OVERVIEW
USNA Publications Inc. will be publishing a graphic novel entitled: U.S.N.A.: The United States of North America, in the spring of 2012. USNA is a dynamic adventure story about a future amalgamation of the United States and Canada and the rebel forces operating within this new union. It is a politically charged thriller that is both inventive in the future world it creates and topical in its shadowing of present day events. With the ongoing wars on terrorism and the establishment of Homeland Security in the United States, we are living in a time when the basic rights of the individual are threatened. The picture painted by the authors in the original screenplay, written 25 years ago, is hauntingly prescient and accurate.

USNA represents a new direction in story telling originating in Canada. The graphic novel was first written as a screenplay by David Longworth and Allan Stanleigh in 1987. Further story development was completed with the help of Harry Kalensky. The graphic novel is based on the screenplay with the art and illustrations of Dave Casey (http://www.dave-casey.com). .

A sample of the art and character sketches from the novel can be seen by visiting The Art section of this site.

For more details on the story please visit The Story section, which provides an overview of the U.S.N.A. story and the characters.

Congratulations to Will Ferguson (who wrote the USNA forward) for winning the Giller Prize Oct 30th 2012 for his novel "419" . Will Ferguson is also  a Pierre Berton Award winner for Canadian History
Many thanks to Will who wrote the forward to USNA

Book Description

Publication Date: August 1, 2012
A time in the future when our two great countries, Canada and the United States, have amalgamated. Within the U.S.N.A. and especially in parts of the former country of Canada, there is a growing discontent. It?s not a fight to return to the days when Canada and the United States were separate countries. It?s about a return to ideals, when the policies of the government represented the best interests of the people, not the best interests of those who govern. The rebels are planning the return of their leader, the exiled ex-prime minister of Canada, Samuel Stern. To combat this threat, a new organization has been created by the administration of USNA. It's a covert homeland security force; the Strategic Home Alliance Defense Organization (S.H.A.D.O.). Operating on the fringes of the law, their mission is simple: locate and eliminate any rebel activity using deadly force if necessary. USNA: The United States of North America is the story of the people?s fight against tyranny. It takes place in our backyard.

USNA: The United States of North America is now available in digital format on Amazon.com and the iTunes store, and in paperback from Amazon.com. Written by Canadians, this fast paced, exciting graphic novel tells the story of a time in the future when our two countries, the US and Canada have amalgamated into a new country: USNA. In this severely economically depressed and politically repressed country, with our young people again conscripted to fight in foreign wars and our prisoners now used as cheap labour on huge corporate prison farms, a rebel movement has sprung up lead by an exiled former prime minister. This is the story of a rebellion. It takes place in our back yard.

excerpt from "Santaland Diaries" Bill Millerd

 ARTISTIC MANAGING DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

One of our most endearing successes was It’s Snowing on Saltspring by Nicola Cavendish (best known at that time as an actress).

The production opened in 1986 and has received several revivals. Nicola submitted her idea for the play when, with the assistance of a Centennial grant from the City of Vancouver, we held a competition for plays that were local in nature and had some connection to our city. Not that anyone would confuse Saltspring Island with Vancouver, but the sentiment in the piece was acknowledged and Nicky’s sense of humour shone through...

..."There were various versions of her theme including It’s Snowing on Saltspring Tra La

(the 1988 musical take from the composer Harry Kalensky)... " Bill Millerd

1993’s Blowin’ on Bowen, and its successor It’s Blowin’, Growin’, and Blowin’ on Bowen from 1995. I suspect at some point Nicola will send us a script with more seasonal adventures on our local Islands.

Album Review

Trooper's second album finds the band getting into the gist of developing radio-tailored rock & roll, thanks to the production help of Randy Bachman. Three of the album's tracks, "Two for the Show" (the obligatory ballad), the lighthearted "Santa Maria," and the roistering guitar-built "Boys in the Bright White Sports Car" all made the Canadian Top 40, verifying the fact that the bandmembers were advancing in their songwriting and in their ability to create marketable music. Even on the non-singles like "Ready" and "Whatcha Gonna Do About Me," it's evident that Bachman's focus was aimed at the merits of a strong hook and a gripping chorus, which in turn escalated Trooper into the same category as country mates like April Wine, Loverboy, and Prism. What's even more noticeable is the added energy coming from vocalist Ramon Maguire, especially on "Sports Car," and from the significant contributions of Frank Ludwig's keyboards, which help to give the band a more confident and professional sound, particularly in comparison to Trooper's self-titled debut album released a year prior. It was with Two for the Show that Trooper won Canadian fans over, even though they wouldn't win a Juno award (Canada's equivalent of a Grammy) for another four years.

"Hot Shots", a greatest hits album, was released in 1979. The song "The Boys in the Bright White Sportscar", from the "Two For The Show" album, was included on the album and soon earned its 'greatest hit' designation. Hot Shots earned 6 platinum albums - the first Canadian album to ever reach this status

Album Review

Dishing out playful songs with freewheeling lyrics, all built around slapdash guitar were Trooper, one of Canada's biggest bands from the mid- to late '70s. Hot Shots is a splendid 12-song assortment of this groups best offerings, bar none. Taking off with the chugga-chugga guitar pulse of "Boys in the Bright White Sports Car," this best-of epitomizes a band that really knew how to have fun. "Baby Woncha Please Come Home" reveals some startling harmonica playing, while "Two for the Show" proves that they can do just as well singing ballads. The synthesizer plays a keen role on "Round Round We Go" while a pounding drum beat accentuates "Raise a Little Hell." This album is a great overview, and would even satisfy anyone who isn't in the know. One of the best-selling compilations in Canadian music history, Hot Shots is extremely pleasing, and is a solid reminder of how amusing rock & roll can be.

To celebrate their 35th Anniversary, Trooper and Universal Music Canada are
proud to announce the release of a totally updated and re-mastered CD: "Hits
From 10 Albums" - a new collection featuring songs spanning the entirety of their recording career.

Then as now, what makes Trooper what they are is great performances and great pop songwriting.

Trooper's ten studio albums have earned multiple gold and platinum awards and their 6 X Platinum greatest hits, Hot Shots, continues to be one of Universal Music Canada's best selling catalog CDs and one of the country's most enduring party soundtracks. In celebration of the band's 35th Anniversary, a totally updated and re-mastered collection - "Hits From 10 Albums" - was released, featuring songs spanning the entirety of their recording career. John Kereiff, writing inGonzo Magazine, dubbed the collection "THE summer album of 2010."

Biography

Vocalist Ramon McGuire formed Trooper (originally Applejack and later Winters Green) in 1972. By 1974 they had added drummer Tommy Stewart and bassist Harry Kalinsky. After hearing Trooper play, Randy Bachman signed the band for his Legend label and released "Baby Woncha Please Come Home" in 1975. The group's self-titled debut appeared the same year; it was followed by Two for the Show (1976). Soon after, Frank Ludwig became Trooper's piano player and Kalinsky was replaced by Doni Underhill. Ludwig played on Knock 'Em Dead Kid (1977), Thick as Thieves (1978), Flying Colors (1979) and Hot Shots (1979), but was then replaced by Rob Deans. The Last of the Gypsies (1989) and Ten (1991) were the last albums recorded for Warner Music, but Trooper is still active.

The Time Capsule Frank Ludwig's Blog:
...Frank's last performance with Trooper was the "25th Anniversary" concert in 2000 at The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver.  It included all members from the "heydays:" Tommy, Doni, (Frank), and the original bass player, Harry Kalensky who had been in on the recording of "Two For the Show. as well as the first Trooper album."  The room was oversold and it was quite emotional for both musicians and the audience who included many of the original road crew. The band rocked!
