About me
I am a Professor of Finance in the Queen's Business School in Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland.
I joined QUB in 2011 from the NI Civil Service. I hold a PhD in Economics, MSc in Mathematics and Bachelor of Engineering.
My main research interests are health economics and household finance. I have published over 30 papers in a range of leading international journals such as European Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Stability, International Review of Financial Analysis, Journal of Real Estate Finance & Economics, Journal of Health Economics, Health Economics, Oxford Bulletin of Economics & Statistics, Oxford Economic Papers, Work Employment & Society and Social Science & Medicine.
I have been part of 17 grant proposals involving QUB and international research teams. Ten of these have been successful bringing in £3.7 million of which three have been from UK Research Councils.
My work has contributed to the UK Financial Capability Strategy, European Commission policy on the role of housing equity release and policy on NI credit unions. I have been involved in two Knowledge Transfer Partnerships - integrating stochastic modelling of mortality risk into the proprietary software of a pensions company and helping a health data analytics company develop their capacity in the economics of personalised medicine.
Since 2008, I have taught a diverse range of UG and PG courses on finance programmes including Research Methods in Finance (MSc programmes), Investment Analysis (BSc Finance) and Stochastic Processes in Finance (BSc Actuarial Science). Students consistently rate my courses highly. I have also taught Introductory Economics on our Joint Foundation Programme at Shenzhen University in China in 2016 and 2018.
In 2020, I was invited to be Associate Editor at an ABS3 journal - International Review of Financial Analysis - and I was also invited in 2019 to be external examiner on UCC/ Irish Management Institute (IMI) MSc Healthcare Leadership programme in a 3-year appointment. The University of South Africa also invited me to contribute to the Santrust doctoral research preparation programme for candidates on the African continent.
In 2016, I was Visiting Research Fellow at Harvard University. Rennes School of Business have appointed me Senior Fellow 2022-2025. I have presented my work at seven major international conferences including Royal Economic Society (Bristol 2017) and European Society of Population Economics (2015). I was invited to present on nine occasions at seminars in Harvard University (2009 & 2011), UCD (2010), University of Kent (2017), University of Cape Town (2017), Heidelberg University (2017), UCC (2019), Central Bank of Ireland (2023) and Rennes School of Business (2024).
