April 30 - Texas



Derrick Lamone Johnson Executed - Convicted for the 1999 abduction, rape and slaying of a female security guard (25) Johnson, was 18 when he was arrested for the 1999 abduction of LaTausha Curry, who was beaten with a board and then suffocated with a shirt and sweater. In a confession to police, Johnson said he and his accomplice (15) raped and killed the woman, who had a  child (4), and told officers where her body could be found. His fingerprints were found in her car and DNA tied him to her rape.

Last Statement - Derrick Lamone Johnson's mother became emotional as she entered the witness chamber and saw her son strapped to the gurney. In a matter-of-fact voice, Johnson told her, "Don't cry. It's my situation. I got it. Hold tight. It's going to shine on the golden child." After telling her he loved her, Johnson said, "That concludes the statement."

Last Meal - None requested

Pronounced dead at 6:23 pm EST.



April 29 - GEORGIA

William Mark Mize



William Mize Executed - (29/04/09) Scheduled to be put to death Wednesday, a day after a Georgia judge corrected a legal glitch that delayed his execution hours before it was to happen. (28/04/09) The Georgia Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the execution of a white supremacist just hours before he was to be put to death. Convicted for the shooting death of Eddie Tucker. A former Ku Klux Klan member, Mize led a small Klan-like group called the National Vastilian Aryan Party. He shot Tucker with a shotgun, execution-style, in October 1994 after Tucker didn't carry out an order to burn down a crack house in Athens.

Last Statement - While the former Ku Klux Klansman said he was ready to die, he maintained his innocence in his final statement to prison officials and 18 witnesses, the newspaper said. "Eddie Tucker was a friend of mine," he said. "I pray for his soul. I saw him killed by another friend of mine." Mize called his execution a "travesty of justice" and said his case hadn't been properly considered by the courts.

Last Meal - Steak, fried chicken breast, baked potato, salad, garlic bread, a pint of butter pecan ice cream, half a pecan pie and soda

April 16 - ALABAMA

Jimmy Dill



Jimmy Lee Dill - Convicted of the 1988 robbery and murder of Leon Shaw in Jefferson County. Dill shot Leon Shaw in the back of the head and robbing him of cocaine and money on Feb. 8, 1988. Shaw, a cocaine dealer, died about 10 months later.

Last Statement - I just hope that god's will be done and everybody find the peace that they need. I'm good.

Last Meal - Fried chicken, fried okra, a biscuit and a root beer

Pronounced dead at 6:16 pm EST.

April 15 - TEXAS

Michael Rosales



Michael Rosales – Convicted for the June 1997 capital murder of Mary Felder (60). Rosales was on intensive probation for drug possession when he removed his electronic monitor, avoided his probation officer and broke into the 68-year-old woman's home. He was looking for something to steal to buy drugs when Felder awoke. Instead of fleeing, Rosales stabbed her more than 130 times with a kitchen knife and needle-nose pliers. He also beat her so severely some of her teeth were knocked out, and one of them lodged in her vocal cords. Blood on Rosales' clothing was determined to contain Felder's DNA.

Last Statement - I love you all. May the Lord be with you. Peace. I’m done.

Last Meal - Six beef enchiladas, a bowl of rice, four pieces of fried chicken, a bowl of mashed potatoes, two glasses of cold milk, a pint of sherbet, Mountain Dew, a double bacon cheeseburger, and a vanilla cake with vanilla icing

March 11 - TEXAS

Luis Salazar



Luis Cervantes Salazar - Convicted of the murder of a hispanic female (28). Salazar crawled through a front window of a private residence. He tried to sexually assault the victim when she woke up. Salazar then stabbed her multiple times in the chest when her 10-year-old son heard her screaming. The victim's son rushed to his mother's aid and was stabbed one time in the chest. Her son was able to get up and run to a neighbor's house and call the police. When they returned to the home, they found the victim unresponsive on the bedroom floor with multiple stab wounds to her chest area. A kitchen knife was lying on the floor by her head. The victim's 2-year-old daughter and 4-month-old baby were also in the bed with her.

Last Statement - Luis Salazar thanked friends and relatives for their friendship and fellowship and expressed love to his mother, brothers, sister and his children. "I'm going to miss them and take them with me in my heart," he said from the death chamber gurney. "Thanks to everyone praying for me." Salazar never acknowledged the family of Martha Sanchez or her murder. Sanchez's oldest child, Erick, was among the witnesses. Her mother and sisters clutched tissues in their hands as they clasped each other's hands. "My heart is going ba-bump, ba-bump, ba-bump," Salazar said and then laughed. He asked for forgiveness and recited the Lord's Prayer. He was asking for forgiveness for the "sins that I can remember" when the drugs began taking effect.

Last Meal - Cheeseburger, meat pizza, chicken, orange juice, a cup of extra olives and pickles, French fries, and three fish with lemons

March 10 - GEORGIA

Robert Newland



Robert L. Newland - Convicted of murder and aggravated assault with intent to rape of his neighbor, Carol Sanders Beatty (27). Newland, After a night of drinking, called Beatty (a former state and national amateur diving champion) out of her home and then tried to kiss her. When she refused his advances, Newland slashed her neck and stabbed her repeatedly in the throat and in the abdomen.

Last Statement - "I'm sorry this happened. I wish I could go back to that day," he said. "I have no grudges against anybody. I still don't remember what happened, but what happened happened." A few minutes after his final statement, he continued talking again after the death chamber's microphone had been turned off. His words were only heard by the people behind the soundproof glass window.

Last Meal - Newland declined a special last meal request and instead had the prison’s meal tray, consisting of chicken and rice, carrots, seasoned collard greens, lima beans, hot rolls, bread pudding and iced tea.

Pronounced dead at 7:35 pm EST.

March 10 - TEXAS

James Martinez

James Edward Martinez - Convicted for the 2000 fatal shootings of Sandra Walton (29) whom he dated briefly, and Michael Humphreys (19), a friend of the woman, outside her Fort Worth apartment complex. Walton was shot at least nine times as she returned home from a late night fast food run. Humphreys, from Arlington, was hit eight times. At the shooting scene, authorities found 27 shell casings from a high powered Austrian made military type rifle. Inside a storage bin Martinez rented, detectives found more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition, bomb making components, pistols, illegal knives, illegally modified firearms and books on killing techniques and body disposal. Martinez and Walton had dated briefly and during the relationship he loaned her $1,000. When they broke up, he demanded repayment quickly. Walton gave him a promissory note, but told friends Martinez continued to harass and threaten her. 

Last Statement - Martinez, in his final statement, told his mother and sister, who were watching through a nearby window, that he loved them and thanked them for everything they did for him. He said, quote: "I hope y'all can move on after this. I'll be fine. I'm fine." Martinez told them all again that he loved them and added, "take care, OK?" As the drugs began taking effect, his mother was overcome with emotion, sobbing and scratching at the glass that separated them. Officers took a wheelchair into the room and removed the mother and her daughter before Martinez was pronounced dead.

Last Meal - Three chili cheese hot dogs with extra cheese, fried okra, french fries and cola

Victim Statement - Brad Humphreys has had his father and his son murdered on 2 different occasions, he witnessed the execution of his fathers’ murderer and will be witnessing the execution of his sons’ murderer. I had to post this statement. 

"There is one thing Brad says he doesn't regret and that is having 'I love you' being the last thing he said to both father and son."

"We have opportunities every day to share our love with people and we need to take advantage of that and avail ourselves of it because you don't know," he said.  "You just don't know."

March 4 - Texas 

Kenneth Wayne Morris

Kenneth Wayne Morris - Convicted for the robbery and murder of James Moody Adams. Morris and two accomplices kicked in the door to Adams' home while he and his wife were sleeping in an upstairs bedroom. Adams awoke and confronted the intruders who demanded firearms. Adams told them he had no firearms, but would hand over all his money. When Adams gave Morris his money, Morris shot him four times for no apparent reason. Adams' wife hid in a closet during the robbery and shooting and was unharmed.

Last Statement - In a brief statement, Kenneth Wayne Morris apologized for the killing. "I'm sorry for all the pain I might have caused you and your family," he said, looking at three of the victim's sons and one grandson. "I carry nothing but love in my heart. I pray one day y'all can forgive me." Morris looked toward two female friends watching through another window and expressed his love to them. "I'm ready to go home," he said, his voice breaking. Then he grinned broadly and mouthed a kiss to the women. "I'll always be with you." As the drugs began taking effect, he turned again toward the victim's relatives and said, "I really am sorry."

Last Meal - Fried chicken, white cake with lemon icing, fried okra and lemonade

March 3 - TEXAS

Willie Pondexter



Willie Earl Pondexter - Convicted of burglarizing the home of Martha Lennox (85) and fatally shooting her in the head. Lennox was sleeping when Pondexter and (at least) one accomplice broke into her home, shot her, then took $18 from her purse and fled in her car.

Last Statement - From the death chamber gurney, Willie Pondexter said he didn't murder anyone, but expressed remorse and apologized for his involvement in the crime. "I am not mad. I'm a little upset and disappointed in the courts. I feel I've been let down," he said. Pondexter said that was all right. "I just played the hand that life dealt me," he said. He looked toward the district attorney who prosecuted him and a distant cousin of his victim and said, "I know I'm wrong asking you to forgive me." Before he could say anything else, the lethal drugs began taking effect.

Last Meal - Fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, biscuits, peach cobbler and lemonade

February 20 - South Carolina

Luke Williams III



Luke A. Williams III - Convicted of murdering his wife and son (12) to collect insurance money in June of 1991. After beating his wife to death and the strangulation of their son, he doused their bodies with gasoline and set them on fire in the family van. Then he drove the van into a tree in Edgefield County in an attempt to stage a fiery accident. 

Last Statement - None

Last Meal - Fried chicken, steak, a baked potato with sour cream and butter, tossed salad, cranberry sauce, peach cobbler, fried turkey and ketchup

Pronounced dead at 6:13 EST.

February 19 - VIRGINIA

Edward Nathan Bell


Sgt. Ricky 
L. Timbrook



Edward Nathan BellConvicted in 2001 of the October 1999 shooting death of Winchester police Sgt. Ricky L. Timbrook. Bell was on probation when Timbrook, who had had run-ins with Bell before, chased him on foot in an attempt to arrest him. Timbrook was shot just above his right eye from a distance of 6 to 18 inches. He was found near a fence, his torso leaning against a wall and his gun still in his holster. At the time Timbrook was killed, his wife was pregnant with their first child. 

Last Statement - Bell did not enter the death chamber under his own power and appeared to be struggling with corrections officials. His dying declaration was to maintain his innocence. "To the Timbrook family, you definitely have the wrong person," Bell said. "The truth will come out one day. This killing me, there's no justice about it."

Last Meal - No "Special" meal requested (Virginia does not have a Final Meal similar to other states). A condemned inmate may order a "Special" meal from the prisons 28 day menu.
