Celebrating Dia de Muertos in Milwaukee, WI, USA

Here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Dia de los Muertos has become increasingly popular in recent years. Every year we have a parade in downtown Milwaukee close to the Latino Arts, Inc. gallery and United Community Center, were folks paint their faces, play music, dance, and create ofrendas. Often times, there is a theme to the parade that involves remembering those who have passed away due to bullying or other social injustices, so the parade takes on some serious topics, but still is able to remember those who have passed in the bright, colorful, festive tradition of el Dia de los Muertos:

To quote David Perkins, an alum from University School of Milwaukee, class of '94 who participated in the parade, "The MKE Dia de los Muertos parade was a huge success. This event is always a blend of joy and sadness. Traditional costumes, music and food bring the Milwaukee Latino community together to celebrate the departed souls of family and friends both young and old."

Google got into the spirit of Day of the Dead making their Google Doodle of the day a series of Papel Picados for Monday, November 2nd.
