Parker Mesa from Trippet

Parker Mesa Overlook from Trippet Ranch
. This is a fairly long hike with a wonderful reward at the end - an absolutely fantastic view of the Pacific Ocean from Santa Monica to Malibu. You can also see as far as downtown LA to the east. You probably can't get a view like this from any other spot in the LA area (except from Nicholas Flat or an airplane). See slide show below.

Parker Mesa Overlook (Topanga)

The trail is about 6 miles roundtrip from Trippet Ranch, in the California State Park in Topanga Canyon, to the overlook and then back. It takes about 3-4 hours walking, depending on your pace and how long you stop to take in the sights, and if you stop for a snack and take photos (recommended to do so at the overlook).

The trail is really a wide fire road that travels along the ridge-line atop the hills to the east of Topanga Canyon Blvd. When we were on the trail we found ourselves exclaiming "Can we really be in Los Angeles right now?". It's amazing how fast you can get to an amazing place like this so close to the hustle and bustle of LA.

This is a great hike to capture the feeling of space, wide vistas and all out in the open. There's very little shade at all, and because of this we recommend the hike in the cooler months. Even though the trail is wide and pretty easy, it's long and there are plenty of moderate inclines, particularly at the start of the trail and much of the way out to the overlook. It's easier coming back. We don't recommend this hike for beginners who are out of shape.

Taking along water is a must, and some snacks are highly recommended due to the length of the trail and energy expended.

The hike described here is one of two major ways to get to the Parker Mesa Overlook. Here are a few of the differences between the two hikes:

Los Liones Trail to Parker Mesa Overlook

This way is more of a workout. It's basically moderately uphill the whole way. The first 1.5 miles is shady and on more of a nature trail as opposed to a wide fire road. As you get up the trail you get several great views of the ocean even before you get to the overlooks.

Parker Mesa Overlook from Trippet Ranch

This approach is an easier hike. While it's generally uphill, it's quite flat and easy. The very first part of the trail is a bit trying, but it's not for very long. There is basically no shade on this trail. While it's on a wide fire road, which isn't as interesting as a small trail through dense foliage, the wide vistas along the trail overlooking the canyons has a tremendous feeling of space.

Note: dogs are not allowed on this trail.

Map and Directions:

You can park for a fee at Trippet Ranch or park on the street outside the park and walk in. The trailhead starts at the end of the parking lot. Follow the trail signs and you'll be fine. (see slide show)

To get to Trippet Ranch, turn east on Entrada Rd off Topanga Canyon Blvd, just north of the small town of Topanga. Go up Entrada until you see signs to the park and ranch.

Have a great hike!
