Conquistadors Webquest

Land has been found! The goal for the Spanish in the New World is to dominate and control all of the wealth. Spanish explorers were known as Conquistadors or conquerors. There are many new adventures for the Conquistadors to experience and treasures to be found.


Learn about the adventures of several Spanish Conquistadors. Complete the provided tasks to learn about individual conquests, the natives they encountered, and the wealth they acquired.


Complete the following tasks to learn about several Conquistadors. Make sure to follow all of the directions for each task. If you have any questions, make sure to ask!!! You may complete the tasks in any order you choose. BE CREATIVE, COLORFUL, AND NEATNESS COUNTS!!!

Task 1: Reading Assignment

  • Print off the provided map.
  • Research the routes of 3 Spanish Conquistadors from the list.
    • Hernan Cortes
    • Francisco Pizarro
    • Hernando de Soto
    • Francisco Vazquez de Coronado
    • Panfilo de Narvaez
    • Francisco Cordoba
    • Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca
    • Vazquez de Ayllon
  • Draw the routes on the map.
  • Create a map key for the routes.
  • Use different colors to represent each conquistador
  • Create a map key
  • Website Resources- use these sites to find maps of routes or Google image search for a map

  • Task 3: Before and After
    • Print the provided map.
    • Color in the areas settled by the following groups of natives
      • Aztecs
      • Mayans
      • Incas
    • Remember to create a map key with the color codes.
    • Print another map
      • Use green to show the Viceroyalty of New Spain
      • Use red to show the Viceroyalty of Peru
    • On the back of one of the maps write a paragraph explaining how the map changed from when the Aztecs, Mayas, and Incas ruled to when the Spanish took over.

    Task 4: Postcards Home
    • Pretend that you are a Spanish Conquistador and are going on a trip.
    • You will need to write 5 postcards home to your family explaining the following things:
      • Where are you headed?
      • Who is with you?
      • What have you experienced?
      • What have you found?
    • Include a wide variety of experiences.
    • Obtain index cards from the teacher to use as postcards.
    • Each card must include at least 5 sentences.
    • The front should be decorated and colorful like a postcard would be.
    • The back should look like a postcard...if you don't know what that looks like, look it up!
    • Make sure to date them properly for the time period of your expedition.
    • BE CREATIVE!!!!
