Chairman's New Year's Message: A Scout is Cheerful!

posted Jan 4, 2019, 8:19 AM by Chairman PackFourFiveFour

Happy New Year!

I love the new year, the whole idea of new beginnings, clean slate, fresh start, out with the old, in with the new… optimism.  Sometimes I get bogged down in pointing out problems and such, and it’s just not the best me, so for now, it’s all Happy and New.  A scout is CHEERFUL:  help me keep it up!

First a thanks to all the hardworking scouts, parents, and leaders of Pack 454.  We had some “roses” in 2018, and sure finished on a strong note with an excellent Holiday gathering, where we crafted a bit, played some games, and made lunches for one of the local homeless shelters.  Nice work!

Looking ahead to this month:

1)     January is always PINEWOOD DERBY month.  We will kick that off on January 12th with our annual PWD workshop.  For those of you new to the pack, that’s when Dads bring their power tools and skills to DFRC to help the boys design and construct their cars.  Come and go as you please.  Mr. Kistler, Mr. Davis, and Mr. Cady will be our Pit Crew and have things ready to go at 10AM, and will close up shop around 2PM.   BYO snacks and water bottle.  More to follow from the Pit Crew Chief(s) with all the usual details about categories and car construction rules.   Again, 10-2 on 1/12.

2)     Derby Day will be February 9th.    We will have the track set up the night before and allow you to check in your cars as we have in years past, this will enable you to get to AM sports, and not have to come in before the race time to register/check in.  Full timeline and more details to follow from Pit Crew Chief Davis!

Note:  We very much need a Snack Bar Director for PWD.  Someone to do some shopping and serve up hot dogs, snacks and drinks to the kids and families.  No experience necessary.  Let me know asap (

3)     Further down the line:  Scout Sunday is usually held in February.  Several churches participate.  Check with yours to see what might be happening.   We will have a Pack meeting on 2/21, featuring a lot of Awards for the scouts, and a Bobcat ceremony for all who have not received that honor. In March there are two events, we’ll again march in the St. Paddy’s Day Parade in Annapolis (3/10), and Blue and Gold Banquet where we celebrate the birthday of scouting and bridge (graduate) our Arrow of Light scouts will be on 3/24… mark your calendars!

Yours in Scouting,
