Statistical Annex

For all countries with generalized epidemics, the first section of this Annex presents selected information on HIV prevalence and numbers of infections. The second section provides references to recent national surveys, and identifies these surveys as the sources for tables in Chapters 6 and 7. The third section provides a map of Africa.

HIV prevalence in countries with generalized epidemics, 2007

The two columns on the right in Annex Table 1 present estimates of HIV prevalence in adults aged 15-49 years and total infections in 2007 for all countries with generalized epidemics. With some adjustments, estimates are from: UNAIDS, 2008 Report on the global AIDS epidemic (Geneva: UNAIDS, 2008). Adjustments are based on data from national surveys. During 2001-08, more than 30 countries conducted national surveys of HIV prevalence (see second section of this Annex). For all such countries, Table 1 reports HIV prevalence from national surveys (indicating the date of the survey in parentheses), and uses that to adjust UNAIDS’ estimated number of infections. For example, UNAIDS estimated that 18.1 percent of South African adults were HIV-positive in 2007, whereas a national survey in 2005 found 16.2 percent HIV prevalence. The table reports HIV prevalence from the 2005 national survey, and uses that statistic to adjust UNAIDS’ estimate of 5.7 million infections to 5.1 million [= {16.2/18.1} x 5.7 million]. With these adjustments, some estimates increase and some fall, and the estimated total HIV infections in Africa in 2007 – 22 million – is the same as UNAIDS’ estimate.

For India, Table 1 reports UNAIDS’ 2007 estimate of 0.3 percent adult HIV prevalence and 2,400,000 infections, which is similar to the 0.28 percent adult HIV prevalence reported from India’s 2005-06 national survey.

National surveys of HIV infection, 2001-09

More than 30 countries with generalized epidemics have arranged well-designed two-stage random sample surveys. In most cases, the ministry of health supervises the survey and publishes the results. These surveys provide the information about HIV prevalence according to sex, urban and rural residence, education, and socio-economic status that has been presented in Tables 6.2-6.6. These surveys are also the source for information on HIV prevalence in men and women reporting 0-1 sexual partners in the past year (Table 7.1), in virgins (Table 7.3), in circumcised and uncircumcised men (Table 7.4), in women according to age (Figure 7.1), and in couples (Table 7.5).
