STATISTICS :
RESEARCH GUIDES :
How to Use the United States Government Agency Section
of the Statistics Resources Research Guide for Statistical Data Sources
for Specific Topic Searches

Finding and using statistical sources is a challenge for most students and many
researchers. Finding government statistical sources are even more of a befuddlement.
Requests for government information, let alone statistics, have dwindled in recent
years in live reference situations. Providing a tool that shows, agency by agency,
where government statistics hide in a group of links to database search results
contributes to statistical literacy and to information literacy for government statistical
sources and to the uses for government statistics.

Even though the actual publications found in these searches are not free, all of the
databases used are. Over fifty government agencies of the United States federal
government are now included and this is a work in progress as is the entire statistics
resource guide. United States government agencies do provide statistical data for other
countries.

Many teachers tell students not to use Google for serious research as I religiously did
until October 2014 when I saw one web address on the MedLib-L discussion group.
I have no idea what the post was about, I just noticed one web address and as the lesson
evolved, I started joining the students rather than trying to change them in regards to
using Google Web Search as part of my database searching research tool.

http://tinyurl.com/zohcf49

*

Many of my posts and Libguide sections have links to Summon Search database search
results. If the discovery service changes at a college like Temple, Summon links in posts or websites
will no longer work for that college's Summon interface, but one can still use the search strategy at
another college library site where Summon is publically available. If that is the case that a Summon
site no longer subscribes to that service, the search strategy can be found from the terms in a Google
Scholar search in the same post and used at another site that uses Summon such as at this time Dartmouth.
Always click the link to get search results from all of Summon rather than just those at the college only
version of Summon for the college whose Summon site you are using. You probably do not go to that
college and will not benefit from that reduction in sources that result from this limitation.

Google Search of colleges using Summon

http://tinyurl.com/jyflws7

Furthermore, the same search strategy, in this case this one:

"pre-sedation assessment" OR "presedation assessment" OR presedation documentation
OR "pre-sedation" documentation) AND "pediatric emergency" AND "pre-sedation"

may work in other search tools you may be aware of including fee based medical and related
databases from EbscoHost and from Proquest.

For example this search found 13 items in CINAHL, an EBSCOHost database

Database Search Results for Food Stamps and Nuttrition

This post requires some explanation. On an internet discussion group,
the topic of food stamps impacts on nutrition was discussed and a link
to an article in the Washington Post on this topic was shared.
The topic was framed under the concepts of healthy meals and food stamps.
I came up with four phrases for healthy meals including healthy foods,
nutritious foods and nutritious meals in addition to the original phrase.
I shared links to several database search results for this topic. I had a brain
storm and realized that I could have used the word nutrition as well.
Adding this word hugely increased the number of sources found.
This post contains both sets of searches so that any interested in who search
terminology can change search results will have a number of examples to
explore and the second search lists over twenty examples of sources found
with two of these searches. The links provided with each found and shared
source lead to a Google Scholar or Google Books search of that sources title.

askMEDLINE Allows MEDLINE/PubMed queries in the form of simple questions.
The tool also provides links to PICO (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome)
interface & Babel MesH - (Multilanguage search for MEDLINE/PubMed).

eTBLAST Online system that offers the easiest and most effective method of published
literature search with abstracts, rather than words and phrases as query components.
The set of utilities at eTBLAST can hierarchically list articles with high similarity to
the query paragraph as well as the journals and authors frequently associated with
such related articles

PubMed Widely used bio-literature search engine developed from NCBI. It is a free
interface for searching Medline database. It also covers other NLM databases.

PubMed Interact It is an interactive interface for MEDLINE/PubMed and follows the
search and syntax rules of PubMed. This interactive site from NCBI presents ‘slider bars’
to enable quicker settings and re-settings of different parameters involved in the search
strategy. The tool seems to be in its beta version.

ReleMed ReleMed categorizes each retrieved citation into 8 different levels of relevance,
depending on the frequency of occurrence of the search terms within the title, sentences
of abstract & MeSH. Has efficient Automatic term mapping feature.
MiSearch Adaptive PubMed Search Tool Ranks the retrieved citations based on an
estimated likelihood of a user choosing to view them. User’s citation choices are acquired
by the program during browsing.

MedKit The tool seems to be developed to overcome the following limitations of PubMed.
PubMed Informer It is a tool for monitoring topics of interest from MEDLINE/PubMed
using five tracking methods: Web access, e-mail, Short Message Service (SMS), PDA
downloads and RSS feeds
Info-PubMed Info-PubMed is based on Natural Language Processing and Text Mining
techniques

Whatizit A sister application from EBI that can be useful in a wide variety of advanced
searches. This engine, which may also be accessed programmatically, can search specific
terms in molecular biology in given texts and link them to publicly available databases.
CiteSeerX (beta version) It is a search engine for the scientific literature and academic
papers.

Novoseek It is a biomedical search engine. It indexes articles from PubMed and open
access articles from PubMed Central.
Web of Science Is a commercial search engine from Thomson Reuters, known for its
citation tracking ability.
