other schools and institutions. Many people would not consider using a large number of these databases for research
related to public health.

" " Selecting Databases to Search in EBSCO Host and Applying Them to a
Life Care Planning Search, Part I David Dillard BA MLS p. 59
http://tinyurl.com/lkpkcyp

Before you start a search, you must decide where you want
to search. Many people make the quickest decision: Google! Those
seeking higher quality and more precise results may select Google
Scholar or Google Books.

(See Dillard D,
The science of searching databases,
JNLCP XIII.3, Fall 2013)

However, if you have a complex search topic or need
very accurate, targeted results, searching with EBSCOHost
may be a better alternative. This article discusses the
databases provided by EBSCOHost useful in life care planning
or medical fields in general. Future articles will explore some
techniques for searching the databases of EBSCOHost.

ScienceDirect is a website operated by the Anglo-Dutch publisher Elsevier. It was launched in March 1997.
[1] It is a platform for access to nearly 2,200 academic journals and over 25,000 e-books.[2] The journals are
grouped into four main sections: Physical Sciences and Engineering, Life Sciences, Health Sciences, and
Social Sciences and Humanities. For most articles abstracts are freely available; access to the full text
(in PDF and, for newer publications, also HTML) generally requires a subscription or pay-per-view purchase.

Scope of Revision

This edition incorporates all 2014 additions and changes to the schedules
(see Class Numbers Added and Canceled) and to the index, which has been
newly edited and updated with appropriate MeSH concepts. One hundred and
five (105) new index entries were created of which forty-two (42) are from
the 2014 MeSH; the remainder are MeSH terms from previous years. Numerous
main index entries and cross references were modified to reflect changes
in the MeSH vocabulary. Thirty-nine (39) index entries were deleted.

Although the broad nature of the NLM Classification schedules precludes
complete correspondence with MeSH, new class numbers were added and
existing class numbers were canceled as needed to reflect other changes in
MeSH and the biomedical and related sciences literature cataloged.

The QS (Human Anatomy) and QT (Physiology) schedules were the major area
of focus for the 2014 edition.

Two (2) QT schedule outline headers were changed:

QT 180-245 Physiology. Hygiene was changed to QT 180-245 Hygiene.
QT 250-275 Leisure Activities. Sports Medicine was changed to QT 250-275
Leisure Activities. Sports. Sports Medicine.
Some QS and QT class number captions and notes were revised to better
reflect the scope of the number. For example:

At QS 26.5, the note was added: Classify here works on Visible Human
Projects.
At QS 504, the note was added: Includes works on comparative histology
between humans and animals.
At QS 645, the caption was changed from Placentation. Fetal membranes to
Placentation. Extraembryonic membranes
At QT 4, the caption was changed from General works, including comparative
physiology to General works. The note was changed from Classify material
on comparative physiology limited to animals in QP to Includes works on
comparative physiology between humans and animals. Classify material on
human physiology only in QT 104. Classify animal physiology in QP, QL, or
SF.
At QT 34, the caption was changed from Biophysics to Biophysical
phenomena.
At QT 36, the caption was changed from Biomedical engineering to
Bioengineering. Biomedical engineering (General).
At QT 36.5, the caption was changed from Nanotechnology to
Microtechnology. Nanotechnology.
At QT 150, the caption was changed from Hot climates to Hot temperature.
At QT 250, the caption was changed from Recreation. Outdoor activities to
Leisure activities.
Changes were made to other class schedules. For example:

At WA 260, the note was added: Classify works on protective devices in
sports and leisure activities in QT 250-261.
At WB 480, the caption was changed from Ultraviolet therapy. Sunlight.
Light therapy to Ultraviolet therapy. Heliotherapy. Light therapy.
At WD 610, the caption was changed from Hot Temperature to Heat stress
disorders.
At WN 600, the note was added: Classify works on the effects of
non-ionizing radiation on humans in QT 162.U4.
Changes were made to Table G (Geographic Notations).

Four (4) Table G numbers were added:
DB9--British Virgin Islands
DC25--Caribbean Netherlands
DC95--Curao
DS5--Sint Maarten
Three (3) cross references were added:
Saba see Caribbean Netherlands
St. Eustatius see Caribbean Netherlands
Virgin Islands of the United States see United States Virgin Islands
One Table G number caption was modified:
DV5--Virgin Islands of the United States was changed to United States
Virgin Islands
Two (2) Table G numbers were relocated:
DN4--Netherlands Antilles was moved to the Historical Geographic Locations
section
JI5Indochina was moved to the Obsolete Table G Notations section

Historical Development

The genesis of the NLM Classification is a Survey Report on the Army
Medical Library, published in 1944, which recommended that the "Library be
reclassified according to a modern scheme," and that the new scheme be a
mixed notation (letters and numbers) resembling that of the Library of
Congress. Subsequently a classification committee was formed, chaired by
Keyes D. Metcalf and including Mary Louise Marshall who compiled the
schedules. Medical specialists acted as consultants to the committee.
Based on the consultants' advice, that of the committee and of the NLM
cataloging staff, Ms. Marshall produced a preliminary edition of the
Library's Classification, which was issued in 1948.

The preliminary edition was revised by Frank B. Rogers and the first
edition of the new classification was published in 1951 as the U.S. Army
Medical Library Classification. It firmly established the current
structure of the classification and NLM's classification practices. The
headings for the individual schedules were given in brief form (e.g., WE -
Musculoskeletal System; WG - Cardiovascular System) and together they
provided an outline of the subjects that constitute the National Library
of Medicine Classification . These headings were interpreted broadly as
including the physiological system, the specialty or specialties connected
with them, the regions of the body chiefly concerned and subordinate
related fields. Within each schedule, division by organ usually has
priority. All schedules, including some of their sections, are preceded by
a group of form numbers representing publication types. These numbers,
ranging generally from 1-39, are employed as mnemonic devices throughout
the Classification.

Beginning with the 2002 edition, the National Library of Medicine
Classification is published in electronic form and updated annually:

The online environment offers many advantages to users including
hyperlinks between class numbers in the index and the schedules, and
between terms within the index and direct links from these to the MeSH
record itself under the MeSH Browser.

The online data creation and maintenance system of the Classification
gives NLM the ability to update the classification annually in tandem with
MeSH. Publication of printed editions ceased with the 5th revised edition,
1999. Beginning with the 2006 edition, the NLM Classification is also
available in PDF (Portable Document Format) at
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/class/terms_cond.html.

Structure of the NLM Classification

The National Library of Medicine Classification covers the field of
medicine and related sciences, utilizing schedules QS-QZ and W-WZ,
permanently excluded from the Library of Congress (LC) Classification
schedules. The various schedules of the LC Classification supplement the
NLM Classification for subjects bordering on medicine and for general
reference materials. The LC schedules for Human Anatomy (QM), Microbiology
(QR) and Medicine (R) are not used at all by the National Library of
Medicine since they overlap the NLM Classification.

Relationship to MeSH

The schedules, with their special requirements for use with all types and
forms of materials, preclude strict adherence to the hierarchical
arrangement of the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), the Library's
thesaurus for indexing and cataloging. The schedules maintain their own
character in order to provide for material, old as well as new, acquired
for the Collection, including dictionaries, atlases, directories and other
items, which are not suitable for the arrangements, found in MeSH.
However, an effort was made to make schedule headings, subheadings and
class number captions compatible with MeSH terminology. The MeSH Tree
Structures were used extensively to determine the proper placement of a
concept in a schedule and to relate index headings to one another. Since
the representation of subjects in the schedules of the NLM Classification
is intentionally broad, the captions do not enumerate all of the
subordinate concepts that are to be classified in a given number. MeSH
descriptors for these subordinate concepts do appear in the index, to the
extent practical with appropriate references to the classification
numbers.

Index

The Index to the NLM Classification consists primarily of Medical Subject
Heading (MeSH) concepts used in cataloging. It includes concepts first
appearing in the latest edition of MeSH and other older concepts as
warranted by the literature cataloged. It also provides access to
classification numbers through these MeSH concepts. Index entries are
updated annually to reflect additions and changes of the latest edition of
MeSH. For additional information on the Index see About the Index.

Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed Compared

The National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE database is available from many sources. The two primary ways to access
MEDLINE at Dartmouth/DHMC are Ovid and PubMed. Each one has merits and drawbacks; the important thing is to become
comfortable with one of them. If you are fresh to MEDLINE, we recommend PubMed.

Search Help:

Keyword - A keyword search will find items anywhere in the bibliographic
record.

Thesaurus - A thesaurus search will find common subject terms from the
Alcohol Studies Thesaurus to add to your keyword and then search the
subject field.

Other Fields - A field search will find items that appear in the element
corresponding to the selected field, e.g., "Title", "Subject",
"Description", etc.

Boolean search - A search for "marijuana" or "ecstasy" will find records
containing "marijuana", or records containing "ecstasy", whereas a search
for "marijuana" and "ecstasy" will find items containing both "marijuana"
and "ecstasy." Mixed Boolean searches such as "Jane and Doe or John" or
"Jane or Doe and John" are not supported.

Truncation - Supports right-truncated queries. The query term "williams*"
finds all records containing the word "Williams" or "Williamson", or any

Searching

You can search for documents using both simple and advanced techniques.

To search for documents containing a specific word, type the word into the
search window, and click the search button. The number of records is
displayed in the search panel, and a list of the documents found at the
bottom of the page. (See Viewing documents for more information on
displaying these records). You can view the results from your most recent
search at any time by clicking the Results link on the search panel.

To search for documents which contain several different words (for
example, diabetes insulin injection), type all the words in the search
window. Click the button All these words to the left of the search window,
and then click the search button. All the documents that are displayed
will contain each of the words that you have selected.

To search for documents which contain any one of a selection of words (for
example, heart cardiac coronary), type all the words in the search window.
Click the button Any of these words to the left of the search window, and
then click the search button. All the documents that are displayed will
contain at least one of the words you have selected.

To search for a specific phrase of two or more words, you should type
double quotes (") around the phrase. For example, to search for the phrase
atrial fibrillation, type "atrial fibrillation" in the search window.

One can connect via link to Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and to ones
search history.

Results in searches show the number of records from each of the component
databases, DARE, NHS EED, and HTA as well as the cummulated record total
for all three databases.

Introducing SciTech Connect

by Mark Martin

02 April, 2013

in Products and Content

OSTI Blog

http://www.osti.gov/ostiblog/introducing-scitech-connect

.

.

With the release of SciTech Connect, OSTI is expanding its deployment of
semantic search, an innovative technology to improve the quality and
relevance of search results across the majority of its DOE content.
Semantic search is a way to enhance search accuracy contextually. Rather
than relying on search algorithms that identify a specific query term,
semantic search uses more complex contextual relationships among people,
places and things. It is an especially effective search approach when a
person truly is researching a topic (rather than trying to navigate to a
particular destination).

.

OSTI Director Walt Warnick has said this about SciTech Connect: Now, with
SciTech Connect, we are expanding deployment of innovative semantic search
technology to make DOE R&D results easier to retrieve and thereby better
serve our dual core mission getting DOE results out to the scientific
community and beyond, and getting the communitys results into DOE.

.

SciTech Connect contains all the full-text documents and citations
previously found in Information Bridge and Energy Citations Database.
Thus, SciTech Connect contains over sixty-five years of energy-related
citations created and/or collected by OSTI. There are over 2.5 million
citations, including citations to 1.4 million journal articles, 364,000 of
which have digital object identifiers (DOIs) linking to full-text articles
on publishers websites. SciTech Connect also has over 313,000 full-text
DOE sponsored STI reports; most of these are post-1991, but close to
85,000 of the reports were published prior to 1990.

.

We are gradually phasing out Information Bridge and Energy Citations
Database (more information). These products accounted for approximately
half of the 298 million transactions OSTI handled in 2012. OSTI will work
to ensure a smooth transition for patrons as it consolidates these two
web-based services into SciTech Connect.

.

SciTech Connect consolidates the contents of OSTI's Information Bridge and
Energy Citations Database, and will gradually replace these products

OSTI Launches SciTech Connect, Consolidates Information Bridge and Energy
Citations Database

http://www.osti.gov/home/osti_launch_scitech

.

.

The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical
Information (OSTI) has launched SciTech Connect, a new portal to free,
publicly available DOE research and development (R&D) results. SciTech
Connect incorporates the contents of two of the most popular core DOE
collections and employs an innovative semantic search tool enabling
scientists, researchers and the scientifically- attentive public to
retrieve more relevant information. OSTI plans to gradually phase out its
current DOE Information Bridge and Energy Citations products and replace
them with the improved search interface of SciTech Connect.

.

OSTI developed the new resource to help increase access to science,
technology and engineering research information from DOE and its
predecessor agencies. SciTech Connect represents one of the largest
deployments of semantic search by a federal agency to date.

.

OSTI historically has been a leader in pioneering the use of new
technologies to make more DOE and federal science accessible to more
people more conveniently than ever before, said OSTI Director Walter
Warnick. Now, with SciTech Connect, we are expanding deployment of
innovative semantic search technology to make DOE R&D results easier to
retrieve and thereby better serve our dual core mission getting DOE
results out to the scientific community and beyond, and getting the
communitys results into DOE.

.

Consolidated in SciTech Connect, DOE Information Bridge and Energy
Citations accounted for approximately half of the 298 million transactions
OSTI handled in 2012. OSTI will work to ensure a smooth transition for
patrons as it consolidates these two web-based services into SciTech
Connect.

.

Product Scope

DOE sponsored STI reports; most of these are post-1991, but close to
85,000 of the reports were published prior to 1990.

.

SciTech Connect includes technical reports, bibliographic citations,
journal articles, conference papers, books, multimedia, and data
information sponsored by DOE through a grant, contract, cooperative
agreement, or similar type of funding mechanism from the 1940s to today.
This collection continues to grow as new scientific and technical
information resulting from DOE research becomes available.

.

The records for the early years represent a comprehensive worldwide
collection of nuclear science literature. In addition to reports from the
Atomic Energy Commission and other U.S. Government agencies, this
collection includes numerous non-governmental publications, as well as
foreign and foreign language material. In the mid-1970s, the scope of the
database expanded to cover all forms of energy-related scientific and
technical information.

.

Semantic Search

.

With the release of SciTech Connect, OSTI is expanding its deployment of
semantic search, an innovative technology to radically improve the quality
and relevance of search results across the majority of its DOE content.
Semantic search is a way to enhance search accuracy contextually. Rather
than relying on search algorithms that identify a specific query term,
semantic search uses more complex contextual relationships among people,
places and things. It is an especially effective search approach when a
person truly is researching a topic (rather than trying to navigate to a
particular destination).

.

SciTech Connect employs a semantic search technique known as
keyword-to-concept mapping. It accepts keyword-based queries and returns
concept-mapped queries as in a taxonomy; a search term is mapped to other
associated terms, including narrower and related concepts.

.

In this way, semantic search enables the new SciTech Connect search engine
to recognize and make use of the logical relations among concepts in
different scientific documents, regardless of whether those documents use
standard descriptors to express those concepts. As a consequence, even the
casual user easily recognizes the superiority of semantic search results
over traditional word/phrase search results in a side-by-side comparison.

.

SciTech Connect also includes a number of other features, including basic
and advanced search; faceting; in-document search; word clouds; and
personalization which allows users to save searches, define alerts based
on saved searches and create and manage document libraries.

.

Transition Details

.

While SciTech Connect will eventually replace DOE Information Bridge and
Energy Citations Database, the transition will be gradual and seamless.
The transition period should be completed in July 2013. Because SciTech
Connect provides improved access to all the information previously
available via DOE Information Bridge and Energy Citations Database, OSTI
recommends that users bookmark this new product and start using it as
their primary access point to OSTI's collection of DOE research and
development results.

.

More details regarding the transition from DOE Information Bridge and
Energy Citations Database will be made available as this transition moves
forward. Rest assured that changes during the transition will be
communicated, and that existing search and retrieval services,
personalization functionality such as alerts, and saved links will
continue to work seamlessly.

.

Basin scale assessment of gas hydrate dissociation in response to climate
change

by Reagan, M.; Moridis, G.; Elliott, S.; Maltrud, M.; Cameron-Smith, P.
(Jul. 2011)

Paleooceanographic evidence has been used to postulate that methane from
oceanic hydrates may have had a significant role in regulating climate.
However, the behavior of contemporary oceanic methane hydrate deposits
subjected to rapid temperature changes, like those now occurring in the
arctic and those predicted under future climate change scenarios, has only
recently been investigated. Field investigations have discovered
substantial methane gas plumes exiting the seafloor along the Arctic Ocean
margin, and the plumes appear at depths corresponding to the upper limit
of a receding gas hydrate stability zone. It has been suggested that these
plumes may be the first more

CLIMATE CHANGE

by Sathaye, Jayant; Dale, Larry; Larsen, Peter; Fitts, Gary; Koy, Kevin;
Lewis, Sarah; Lucena, Andre (Jun. 2011)

This report outlines the results of a study of the impact of climate
change on the energy infrastructure of California and the San Francisco
Bay region, including impacts on power plant generation; transmission line
and substation capacity during heat spells; wildfires near transmission
lines; sea level encroachment upon power plants, substations, and natural
gas facilities; and peak electrical demand. Some end-of-century impacts
were projected:Expected warming will decrease gas-fired generator
efficiency. The maximum statewide coincident loss is projected at 10.3
gigawatts (with current power plant infrastructure and population), an
increase of 6.2 percent over current temperature-induced losses. By the

Soybean Oil Derivatives for Fuel and Chemical Feedstocks

by McFarlane, Joanna [ORNL] (Jan. 2013)

Plant based sources of hydrocarbons are being considered as alternatives
to petrochemicals because of the need to conserve petroleum resources for
reasons of national security and climate change. Changes in fuel
formulations to include ethanol from corn sugar and methyl esters from
soybean oil are examples of this policy in the United States and
elsewhere. Replacements for commodity chemicals are also being considered,
as this value stream represents much of the profit for the oil industry
and one that would be affected by shortages in oil or other fossil fuels.
While the discovery of large amounts of natural gas associated more

David (Jan. 2013)

Cellulosic and woody biomass can be directly converted to hydrocarbon
gasoline and diesel blending components through the use of integrated
hydropyrolysis plus hydroconversion (IH2). The IH2 gasoline and diesel
blending components are fully compatible with petroleum based gasoline and
diesel, contain less than 1% oxygen and have less than 1 total acid number
(TAN). The IH2 gasoline is high quality and very close to a drop in fuel.
The DOE funding enabled rapid development of the IH2 technology from
initial proof-of-principle experiments through continuous testing in a 50
kg/day pilot plant. As part of this project, engineering work on IH2 more

The impacts of climate change are already affecting human and
environmental systems worldwide, yet many uncertainties persist in the
prediction of future climate changes and impacts due to limitations in
scientific understanding of relevant causal factors. In particular, there
is mounting urgency to efforts to improve models of human and
environmental systems at the regional scale, and to integrate climate,
ecosystem and energy-economic models to support policy, investment, and
risk management decisions related to climate change mitigation (i.e.,
reducing greenhouse gas emissions) and adaptation (i.e., responding to
climate change impacts). The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)

by Oldenburg, C.M. (Apr. 2011)

Fossil fuels are abundant, inexpensive to produce, and are easily
converted to usable energy by combustion as demonstrated by mankind's
dependence on fossil fuels for over 80% of its primary energy supply (13).
This reliance on fossil fuels comes with the cost of carbon dioxide
(CO{sub 2}) emissions that exceed the rate at which CO{sub 2} can be
absorbed by terrestrial and oceanic systems worldwide resulting in
increases in atmospheric CO{sub 2} concentration as recorded by direct
measurements over more than five decades (14). Carbon dioxide is the main
greenhouse gas linked to global warming and associated climate change, the

by Baker, Arnold Barry; Backus, George A.; Romig, Alton Dale, Jr. (Mar.
2010)

Climate change is a long-term process that will trigger a range of
multi-dimensional demographic, economic, geopolitical, and national
security issues with many unknowns and significant uncertainties. At first
glance, climate-change-related national security dimensions seem far
removed from today's major national security threats. Yet climate change
has already set in motion forces that will require U.S. attention and
preparedness. The extent and uncertainty associated with these situations
necessitate a move away from conventional security practices, toward a
small but flexible portfolio of assets to maintain U.S. interests.
Thoughtful action is required now if we are to acquire the capabilities,

of climate change on the electric power system, and how these impacts
could be incorporated into resource planning in the Western United States.
While many aspects of climate change and energy have been discussed in the
literature, there has not yet been a systematic review of the relationship
between specific physical effects and the quantitative analyses that are
commonly used in planning studies. The core of the problem is to
understand how the electric system is vulnerable to physical weather risk,

The Challenges and Potential of Nuclear Energy for Addressing Climate
Change

by Kim, Son H.; Edmonds, James A. (Oct. 2007)

The response to climate change and the stabilization of atmospheric
greenhouse gas concentrations has major implications for the global energy
system. Stabilization of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations
requires a peak and an indefinite decline of global CO2 emissions. Nuclear
energy, along with other technologies, has the potential to contribute to
the growing demand for energy without emitting CO2. Nuclear energy is of
particular interest because of its global prevalence and its current
significant contribution, nearly 20%, to the worlds electricity supply. We
have investigated the value of nuclear energy in addressing climate
change, and have explored the potential challenges more

Global situational awareness and early warning of high-consequence

by Backus, George A.; Carr, Martin J.; Boslough, Mark Bruce Elrick (Aug.

Global monitoring systems that have high spatial and temporal resolution,
with long observational baselines, are needed to provide situational
awareness of the Earth's climate system. Continuous monitoring is required
for early warning of high-consequence climate change and to help
anticipate and minimize the threat. Global climate has changed abruptly in
the past and will almost certainly do so again, even in the absence of
anthropogenic interference. It is possible that the Earth's climate could

While climate-change models have done a reasonable job of forecasting
changes in global climate conditions over the past decades, recent data
indicate that actual climate change may be much more severe. To better
understand some of the potential economic impacts of these severe climate
changes, Sandia economists estimated the impacts to the U.S. economy of
climate change-induced impacts to U.S. precipitation over the 2010 to 2050
time period. The economists developed an impact methodology that converts
changes in precipitation and water availability to changes in economic
activity, and conducted simulations of economic impacts using a

The physical science behind climate change

by Collins, William; Collins, William; Colman, Robert; Haywood, James;

For a scientist studying climate change, 'eureka' moments are unusually
rare. Instead progress is generally made by a painstaking piecing together
of evidence from every new temperature measurement, satellite sounding or
climate-model experiment. Data get checked and rechecked, ideas tested
over and over again. Do the observations fit the predicted changes? Could
there be some alternative explanation? Good climate scientists, like all
good scientists, want to ensure that the highest standards of proof apply
to everything they discover. And the evidence of change has mounted as
climate records have grown longer, as our understanding of the climate

About the Headings List Display

.

All initial search results are presented as a Headings List--an
alphabetical list of all headings found in the Library of Congress Online
Catalog that fall nearest alphabetically to the first words of the search,
whether the headings have authority records associated with them or not.

.

Important! Authority records are available only for those headings in the
list that display with an icon in the leftmost column.

.

Note: Because the Library of Congress Online Catalog includes millions of
bibliographic records created over many decades and according to a variety
of cataloging policies, the Headings List for a search may include many
headings that do not have associated authority records.

.

Examples include headings labelled "[from old catalog];" name-title
headings that under former cataloging practice could be assigned as access
points without an authority record; headings consisting of established
subject headings from the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)
combined with free-floating subdivisions; and subject access points
established in a variety of other thesauri but not in LCSH.

Access to Authority Records

.

1) What is an authority record?

.

An authority record is a tool used by librarians to establish forms of
names (for persons, places, meetings, and organizations), titles, and
subjects used on bibliographic records. Authority records enable
librarians to provide uniform access to materials in library catalogs and
to provide clear identification of authors and subject headings. For
example, works about "movies," "motion pictures," "cinema," and "films"
are all entered under the established subject heading "Motion pictures."

Authority records also provide cross references to lead users to the
headings used in the catalog, e.g., a search under: Snodgrass, Quintus
Curtius, 1835-1910 will lead users to the authorized form of heading for
Mark Twain, i.e., Twain, Mark, 1835-1910.

.

It is important to note that authority records do not represent materials
in the Library's collection, rather they are a tool used by librarians to
organize the library catalog and assist users in finding those materials.
A recent reviewer (in a library publication) noted that users may find
helpful information in Library of Congress Authorities, such as an
author's middle name or a company name change. But generally speaking,
Library of Congress Authorities is a service intended for use by technical
services librarians and others interested in using LC authority records in
their catalogs.

.

The MARC 21 Format for Authority Data defines the authority record as:
a carrier for information concerning the authorized forms of names and
subjects to be used as access points in MARC records, the forms of these
names, subjects and subdivisions to be used as references to the
authorized forms, and the interrelationships among these forms.

.

A name may be used as a main, added, subject added, or series added access
entry. The term name refers to:

Personal names (X00)

Corporate names(X10)

Meeting names (X11)

Names of jurisdictions (X51)

Uniform titles (X30)

Name/title combinations

.

A subject may be used only as a subject access entry. The term subject
refers to:

Topical terms (X50)

Geographic names (X51)

Names with subject subdivisions

Terms and names used as subject subdivisions

.

For more information on MARC 21, see http://www.loc.gov/marc/

.

2) Are authority records available free of charge?

.

Yes. All authority information in Library of Congress Authorities is
available free of charge via this Web site (authorities.loc.gov). Users do
not have to register or request permission to search, save, print, or
email the LC authority records. The only limitation is that authority
records may only be saved, printed or emailed one at a time.

.

3) Are authority records up to date?

.

Yes. Library of Congress Authorities are updated every night, Monday
through Saturday. The nightly update includes records newly created and
updated the previous day by LC catalogers and contributed by NACO
participants. Any records deleted during the previous week are removed on
a weekly basis early every Monday morning.

.

4) Are bibliographic records and holdings information available?

.

No. The current release of Library of Congress Authorities does not
provide access to LC bibliographic records or holdings information.
Bibliographic records and holdings information are available via the
Library of Congress Online Catalog at: http://catalog.loc.gov/

.

5) Does the Library of Congress provide Z39.50 access to authority
records?

.

No. Z39.50 access to authority records is not currently available. LC
does expect to be able to offer Z39.50 access to authority records in a
future release.

.

Searching Authority Records

.

6) Can authority records be searched by LCCN?

.

No. In this pilot release of Library of Congress Web Authorities,
searching by LCCN is not available. The four possible searches in this
release are: Subject Authority Headings, Name Authority Headings, Title
Authority Headings, and Name/Title Authority Headings.

.

7) Can name and subject authorities be searched in a single query?

.

No. Although most name, title (includes series), and name/title authority
headings may be searched using the Subject Authority Headings search type,
it is really necessary to select the appropriate search type to ensure
retrieval of ALL relevant records in these categories.

.

8) Can authority records be searched by keyword(s)?

.

No. Authority records cannot be searched by keyword(s). The available
searches, Subject, Name, Title, and Name/Title Authority Headings, are
"left-anchored" -- search words must be entered in order starting with the
leftmost word (omitting initial articles and initial punctuation).

9) How can I search for headings with diacritics and special characters?

Diacritics and special characters need not be included in authority
headings searches. Some characters, like #, etc., are not considered
"special characters" and should be included in searches.

.

For example, Gabriel Garc Mquez may be searched as: garcia marquez gabriel

.

10) Is it possible to search subject subdivisions and the display of full
subject heading hierarchies?

.

No. However, many searching enhancements are now offered in Classification
Web, a fee-based web online service, combining Library of Congress Subject
Headings and Library of Congress Classification, available on subscription
from the Library of Congress Cataloging Distribution Service.

.

Viewing and Saving Authority Records

.

11) Is it possible to view and save records with the full MARC 21
character set?

.

Yes. Library of Congress Authorities offers two MARC formats for saving
records: MARC-8/non-unicode and UTF-8/unicode (see
http://authorities.loc.gov/help/savemail.htm. To view the authority record
showing the MARC fielded information, be sure to select the "MARC Display"
tab (which is the default record display).

.

12) In the Headings List, why do some headings display without icons?

.

The Headings List is an alphabetical list of all headings found in the
Library of Congress Online Catalog that fall nearest alphabetically to the
first words of the search, whether the headings have authority records
associated with them or not. The headings that do not have an icon come
from bibliographic records found in the Online Catalog.

.

13) Why don't all headings have a corresponding authority record,
reference, or note?

.

Not all headings on bibliographic records in the LC Database have a
corresponding authority record, reference, or note. Users will not find an
authority record for every access point for the following reasons:

.

The 12 million bibliographic records in the LC Database were created over
the course of more than a century of cataloging at the Library of
Congress. Many of these bibliographic records were cataloged before the
Library began creating MARC authority records.

.

Some new bibliographic records, by policy - e.g., minimal level cataloging
-do not have authorities created unless conflicts require them. Therefore
not all access points on LC bibliographic records have corresponding
authority records in the LC Database.

.

LC's current cataloging policy does not call for every subject heading
with a free-floating subdivision to be represented by a separate authority
record in the LC Database. Some examples would be Twain, Mark, 1835-1910 -
Homes and haunts or Live oak - Seeds - Testing. Similarly, not all titles
used as access points have associated authority records. For example,
works about the magazine entitled The New Yorker do not have an associated
authority record for that title.

.

Also, LC has many non-LCSH subject headings, primarily for audio/visual
materials, that are not represented by authority records. MESH headings
are an example of non-LC subject headings on LC bibliographic records that
do not have associated authority records in the LC Database.
The LC Database includes bibliographic records that are in process, that
is, the cataloging has not been completed. As LC staff complete these
records, they create the relevant authority records according to the
current policies described above. As soon as authority records are added
or updated in the LC Database they are available online via LC
Authorities.

.

14) Why are there two entries, non-series title and series title, for many
headings listed in the search results of a Title Authority Heading search?

.

A heading represented by a series authority record will appear as two
entries, non-series title and series title in the headings list for a
Title Authority Heading search. This is a result of treatment of the 008
coding for bytes 14 and 16 in the authority record. The authority record
can be viewed via either entry.

.

Example: a Title Authority Headings search for the title "Theoretical
chemistry." The Headings List shows the heading first as a non-series
title; one bibliographic record is associated with that use of the heading
(a serial with a 130 field: Theoretical chemistry (London, England :
1965)). The second column indicates that nine bibliographic records are
associated with the heading as a series title. These are analytics with
the series heading in 830 fields: Theoretical chemistry (London, England :
1965).

.

Series authority records may be retrieved by a Title or a Name-Title
Headings search, as appropriate. For these searches (as for Name Heading
searches), LC Authorities presents a heading in the Headings List when
byte 14 or byte 16 of the 008 field contains value 'a'.
byte 14: value "a" indicates heading is appropriate for use as a main or
added entry (as a 1XX/7XX field in a bibliographic record; i.e., not as a
series entry)
byte 16: value "a" indicates heading is appropriate for use as a series

.

Comments and Reporting Problems

.

16) How can I report errors in bibliographic or authority records to the
Library of Congress?

.

The bibliographic and authority records presented in the Library of
Congress Online Catalog and Library of Congress Authorities represent the
different cataloging practices employed by the Library over time. Some
records do not follow current practice.

.

Users should check headings carefully to make sure that they have not made
an error in searching, or that a missing diacritic or special character
cannot be displayed due to the present limitations of the software.

.

If you have confirmed an error in a Library of Congress authority record,
you may report it to the Policy and Standards Division at: policy@loc.gov.
