Raising Awareness: Darfur Alert's Long Record

Since our start in early 2004, the Darfur Alert Coalition and our leaders have been involved in nearly 150 events spanning the United States, Canada and even Europe.
Here is a summary of our education, advocacy and relief achievements.   We have:

    * Given more than 100 public talks to schools, universities, churches, synagogues, community groups and civic organizations.

    * Raised $30,000 in a community drive for emergency health services for 40,000 newly displaced Darfurians. This was in response to Sudan's ousterof relief groups in March 2009.

    * Raised nearly $60,000 in public contributions for the Solar Cooker Project, which protects refugee women in Chad from rape.

    * Successfully pressured the Vanguard mutual fund to call on Chinese oil firms to improve their record in Darfur.

    * Helped free five Sudanese activists from detention and torture, through vigorous letter-writing and advocacy campaigns.

    * Helped secure Philadelphia’s divestment from Sudan-related pension holdings.

    * Organized five demonstrations and public vigils in the Philadelphia area. Two were among the largest held in any world city during the Global Days for Darfur.

    * Presented testimony in the U.S. Congress, the United Nations, the Pennsylvania General Assembly, and the Philadelphia Pension Board.

    * Provided keynote speakers at the national Save Darfur demonstrations in Washington and New York.

    * Brought human-rights activists directly from Sudan for a Darfur Speakers Tour, that gave 50 presentations from Boston to Richmond.

    * Established partnerships across our area, joining megachurches, student clubs, interfaith fellowships and others including the Philadelphia Bar Association.

    * Given dozens of interviews and media presentations to newspapers, TV and radio, including on a National Public Radio “Town Meeting” with Ray Suarez.

    * Been featured speakers at academic and policy conferences in U.S. and Canada.

    * Partnered in the Free Library’s 2008 “One Book, One Philadelphia” campaign focusing on Sudan’s wars.

    * Installed the “Children of Darfur” art exhibit at six venues, including academic conferences in Montreal, the Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg, and the Anne Frank Center in New York.

    * Organized a ground-breaking Youth Conference on Darfur, bringing together Sudanese and American teens.

    * Hold key roles in the Darfuri Leaders Network. Composed of Darfuri expatriates from around the world, the DLN is developing and promoting a model peace plan for Sudan.
