The high five - such a friendly and adaptable gesture!
Warm, cheerful, upbeat, optimistic, congratulatory.
A greeting every bit as useful as the traditional handshake but so much less formal; as warm and personal as a traditional kiss or hug... but so much less embarrassing!
First popularised, some say, by two American baseball players (Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke of the Los Angeles Dodgers) the high five was adopted universally (or almost) by the young in the 80s and 90s. It is now so widely used by all age groups that it's surely only a matter of time before the younger generation shuns the practice in favour of something more trendy.
Well now I've learned how to do it I'm going to keep slapping palms for as long as people keep slapping them back. So... gimme five, man!
