Dan Johnson's Home Page

WRITER

Dan Johnson is a North Carolina-born writer, who is first and foremost a fan himself.  Dan's love of horror, science fiction and comic books, all of which were cultivated at an early age, fueled his desire to step up from the sidelines of fandom and get into the game as a creative voice.

Dan began his professional writing career while still in college, contributing to several Triad based publications. Dan's first nationally published work came less than a year after he graduated college, when he began contributing articles to Scary Monsters Magazine.  Since that time, Dan has had articles published in Alter Ego, Back Issue, Comic Book Marketplace, Con-Tour, Filmfax, Hogan's Alley, Monster Memories, and Monster News. His work has also appeared in such online publications as Monster Kid and Monster News Online.

Dan has also had work appear in the humor magazine Thwak. Currently he is a writer for the "Dennis the Menace" comic strip, which is seen world wide.

Currently in stores now is Dan's first graphic novel from Antarctic Press, Herc and Thor Pocket Manga Volume One, which follows the misadventures of the legendary Hercules and Thor as they face dangers on Earth and in the God realms. It was originally published in late 2006 and is also available for sale at Antarctic Press.

 CURRENT AND UPCOMING PROJECTS:
Updated 6-10-08

BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR MY NEXT DENNIS!

Due to circumstances beyond our control, updates to the website will be on the lean side this Summer. That’s okay really, especially considering the fact that I can not make any really big announcements about upcoming projects until September and October (hint, hint). I did get the recent proofs for this quarter’s Dennis cartoons, and I know I have one more coming up on Saturday, June 28. I’m providing a link that will be good on that date, and I encourage everyone to check it out. Dennis artist Marcus Hamilton did a super job on this gag, which by the way was the second one I ever submitted. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/fun/dennis.asp?date=20080628

DR. GANGRENE PSAS HIT THE AIR!

I announced before, new episodes of Dr. Gangrene’s Creature Feature will be rolling out in September. Meanwhile, the Nashville’s CW 58 will be running a series of Public Service Announcements featuring Doc and Nurse Moan-eek all through the Summer. The first one, which encourages people to buckle-up for safety, is online and can be seen by visiting Doc’s blog spot at http://drgangrene.blogspot.com/  Also, you can read a recent press release about additional PSAs that will soon begin airing.

BACK ISSUE #28

Just learned that Back Issue  #28, which features my “Off My Chest” piece about Robert Downey Jr. and his role as  Ol’ Shell-head in the upcoming Iron Man film from Paramount Pictures, will be hitting newsstands on May 21, 2008. This is the magazine’s “Heroes Behaving Badly” issue, and based on what I have heard so far, it looks like it will be a keeper. And remember, when you go to buy this, be sure to look for that  sweet Darwyn (The New Frontier, The Spirit) Cooke cover.

Meanwhile, for more info on Back Issue #28, check out  http://twomorrows.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=643&zenid=27849625a0c87f0ff2198cd977f090ea

ANOTHER DENNIS FOR DAN!

My latest Dennis the Menace cartoon ran on Saturday, April 26, and so far it has been getting a pretty good reaction. One of the things I love about Dennis, he says what everyone else is thinking. Question is, was he talking about me or another Mr. Johnson?   Check it out at http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/fun/dennis.asp?date=20080426

THE FIRST SUNDAY DENNIS OF 2008

Here we go, kids! This is my first Sunday Dennis of the year!  And what a bargain, my friends! You get to see it for free just by going to http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/fun/dennis.asp?date=20080420

AND NOW A FEW WORDS FROM THE DAN-MAN!

While at Zombie Con back in March, I sat down for a podcast interview with The Badger from www.rottingfleshradio.com. I have just learned that the interview is now streaming at the website! Once you finish reading the updates to my website, head on over and hear me dish about the next batch of Creature Feature episodes and learn how I became a writer for Dennis the Menace (FYI, I’m about 125 minutes into the broadcast). Also, make sure you check out the interviews my buds, Robert Harris of Cabin Fever and horror author, Kristy Tallman, did for the site at the same convention!

THE FIRST DENNIS OF SPRING

My first Dennis of this quarter ran on Saturday, April 5, 2008. The thing that struck me when this cartoon ran was the fact that while everything was bright and sunny in Dennis’ world, we were facing some pretty crappy weather here in Greensboro. But still we endure (of course it helps when you have a gag running world-wide). Check it out here at: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/fun/dennis.asp?date=20080405

CAN'T WAIT UNTIL OCTOBER!
Meanwhile, I can make one very big announcement here and now. As you regular visitors to this site know, I have been helping out on scripts for Creature Feature, which is hosted by my good buddy Larry Underwood, aka Dr. Gangrene, and  airs on the CW 58 in Nashville, TN. Up until now, Creature Feature has been airing as specials every couple of months. The good news is that Creature Feature will be broadcast every Saturday at noon on CW 58 starting in October of this year and new episodes will run until the first of 2009!

Now, I know a lot of you folks don’t live in the viewing area for CW 58. You can still watch some of Doc’s greatest moments at http://www.youtube.com/drgangrene Also, you can stop by Dr. Gangrene’s lab at http://www.chillercinema.com/

UPCOMING CONVENTION APPEARANCES
I've been busy mapping out my plans for the 2008 convention season and deciding which shows I should try to get in as a guest next year. So far I have been invited to a couple of shows early in the year and I have accepted. Barring professional or family obligations, you can find me hanging out at:

I'm gonna enjoy this until they catch wise and I'm gonna be there and I'm gonna have a blast! I know you all will too if you come on down this weekend!  http://www.heroesonline.com/heroescon.html

MONSTER CON 2008 IN CONCORD, NC October  4-5, 2008

This year’s show promises to be even bigger and better than the first con with something for everyone who loves horror, comic books and/or rock and roll!  http://www.comicmonstore.com/convention.htm
