We are looking for new troupe members to join us in our love of presenting theatricalized Mid-Eastern folk dance and bellydance through community outreach. Members are expected to perform at an intermediate level or higher, present themselves professionally, and be available for Monday evening rehearsals and weekend performances.  Please come prepared to perform a 3-5 minute Mid-Eastern dance.  For more information about auditions, troupe membership, or to request our troupe guidelines or mission statement, please e-mail Treasures in the Sand.
Might you be our newest Treasure?

Bellydance Classes and Rehearsals (schedule subject to change)

Short courses and rehearsals are held on Monday evenings at the UUFP in Newport News (click UUFP for directions).  Please inquire about private coaching or auditioning for the performance troupe.

Treasures in the Sand Mid-Eastern Dance Troupe Rehearsals
The focus of the troupe is to perform a variety of theatricalized Mid-Eastern group folk dance choreographies for a variety of audiences.  We particularly enjoy performing at assisted living and rehab venues and embrace the idea of bringing smiles to those in need.

If you are a dancer who likes the idea of "paying it forward" and gets caught up in the music when you hear a dumbek or a mismar playing (or would like to learn what those may be!), you may be a good match for this group.  Rehearsals are on Monday evenings.  Please inquire about new member protocol - we look forward to hearing from you!

Fun Family Fitness
Interested in a new class which will focus on the younger generation?  Children ages 5-12 and their grown-ups & teens will be invited to try a little Mid-Eastern dance, a touch of yoga, some party line dancing (think Cupid Shuffle and Electric Slide), and a whole lot of fun!  Students must be able to follow directions and participate for 30-45 minutes.  All classes at the UUFP in Newport News.  Minimum number of students required for the class to take; please e-mail Jeylan for more information or to express interest.

Jeylan comes from a performance family and has a background in jazz, ballet, and tap dance. In 1994 she began her study of Middle Eastern dance and fell in love with the rich cultural motivations behind the dance. As a chronic pain patient, she found that the required isolated movements of the dance are both easy on the joints as well as strength building. She was a member of Caravan East Middle Eastern Dance Troupe for seven years, and continually strives to learn about the dance from many resources. She received her Master of Teaching degree from the University of Virginia in 1994. She particularly enjoys working with beginning dancers as they discover the health benefits, history, and delight of Middle Eastern dance.

Jeylan believes that dance should be serious fun. The more work one puts in, the more one will get out. As is the case with most ethnic dance, Middle Eastern dance grew out of the community. Although it is now most often found in the United States as performance entertainment, Jeylan believes that the spirit of the dance remains in the joy of music and movement together.

Upcoming birthday, anniversary or retirement? Give something to remember with a Bellygram!  Treasures in the Sand will provide a beautiful and exciting belly dance in cabaret costume, such as the one shown with the butterflies. For family-friendly settings on the Hampton Roads Peninsula only. Prices start at $75 and may include the presentation of a small gift, card, or balloon. Advance notice is required.
