Skin a Cat

Skin a Cat

The odd things that one learns from reading.  I'm reading Eric Von Lustbader's The Testement.

There is a reference in the book of an old American saying, "There is more than one way to skin a cat."

Of course, me being me, I've always thought it referred to the feline variety.  I never realized that it did not and never did.

The saying comes from skinning a catfish.  I grew up in Illinois and Iowa within a couple of hours of the Mississippi which has thousands of catfish.  I've never had one, not much of a fresh fish eater myself.

One cannot eat a catfish without skinning it.  Obviously there are different methods but one thing most people that prepare catfish do is skin it.

So when put in this context, the feline population heaves a sigh of relief and look down their snooty noses with a "Well, who would EVER skin a cat!  How ridiculous!?!"

To the cat population I apologize and am glad to what it really refers to.

Interesting what one can learn from reading, My Dear Readers and Dear Writers.  Happy 2020!
