Dichotomy

“A dichotomy is an idea or classification split in two. When you point out a dichotomy, you draw a clear distinction between two things. A dichotomy is a contrast between two things. When there are two ideas, especially two opposed ideas — like war and peace, or love and hate — you have a dichotomy.”

This draws the line between your characters.  They will have a clear distinction between them even though there will also be similarities.

They will have both Yin and Yang attributes of each other.

They will be opposites and yet in opposition they will be very similar; just at opposite ends of the scale.

A villain is a hero in reverse, a heroine is a villain without the evil.

Create these important two characters to enhance your story and one will not live, even cannot live without the other.  For without them you have no story.
