h. Some Project Ideas

Many Scouts wonder what types of projects might be acceptable or what type of project might fit their skills and interest. You may receive many suggestions regarding what project you should pick. This is exclusively your choice. You should select a project that is in line with your interests, is a challenge and provides ample opportunity to satisfy each of the rank advancement  number 5 requirements. Your project must present an opportunity for planning, development, and leadership.

An Eagle service project should be of significant magnitude to be special and should represent your best possible effort. The variety of projects performed throughout the nation by Scouts earning their Eagle Scout Award is staggering. Only those living in an area can determine the greatest value and need for that area. Determine, therefore, whether the project is big enough, appropriate, and worth doing.

The District Advancement committee maintains a list of possible projects. If you need a project and are unable to find one on your own or your unit cannot make suggestions please email advancement.chair@gmail.com. 

If a blood drive is chosen and the blood bank provides a set of “canned” instructions to be implemented with no further planning, then the planning effort would not meet the test. You would need to add some new elements to show that you planned. In any case, be sure the project presents a challenge that requires leadership, but also something that you can do with unskilled helpers, and within a reasonable period of time.

 

Restrictions

  • There are no required minimum hours for a project. No one may tell you how many hours must be spent on it.  As a point of reference, the national average for projects is 130 hours.
  • Routine labor is not normally appropriate for a project. This is defined as work you may provide as part of your daily life, or a routine maintenance job. For example, pulling weeds on the football field at your school.
  • While projects may not be of a commercial nature or for a business, some community institutions, such as museums and service agencies (like homes for the elderly, for example), may be acceptable.
  • A project may not be a fundraiser. In other words, it may not be an effort that primarily collects money, even for a worthy charity.
  • No more than one Eagle Scout candidate may receive credit for working on the same Eagle Scout service project.
  • Projects may not be performed for the Boy Scouts of America, or its councils, districts, units, or properties.

The following list shows four years of Eagle projects performed within The Capitol District.
  • Build 2 - 2 X 4 meter gardens to help with Plant Ecology Lab research on how plants grow in certain soil.
  • Design and building two wooden walkways to add to the existing pathway
  • Construct an Adirondack weather shelter.
  • Design and build four benches.
  • Design and construct a raised walkway between the nature trails and run off area. Mark jogging trail with routed 4x4 posts.
  • Expand and modify the fence surrounding the parking lot..
  • Build 160' split rail fence to prevent pre-school aged children from touching the electrical fence and walking into adjacent cemetery.
  • Design and supervise the construction of shelving in 3 separate places, build a floating costume rack and a ship's ladder.
  • Supervise the refurbishment of a parking lot by re-paint over the lines for the parking spots, fixing the parking stops, and trimming back the grass.
  • Construct bird houses for tree swallows on river Island.
  • Build 4 benches, install 2 on a deck, 2 along a trail which he will mulch, will install 4x4's along path's borders.
  • Build a permanent volleyball court for the youth groups and church classes.
  • Supervise home repair for an elderly, low income shut-in, who has mold damage in an area of her house, and minor holes in the walls.
  • Creating a rain garden at the local library.
  • Design and build three wheel chair-accessible benches and enhancing the rain garden around the storm drain.
  • Build several wooden benches
  • Supervise the design and construction 3 hexagon-shaped picnic tables. One table will be handicapped accessible. One table will be for preschoolers.
  • Lead the construction of an arts advertisement sign for the Arts and Music Festival
  • Supervise erosion control and site improvement to a living shore line and plant water grass.
  • Lead the assembly of a storage shed.
  • Design and lead others in the construction of a pergola and plant a garden around the trellis.
  • Construct a 141-foot pathway leading from the narthex to the back at church.
  • Supervise modernization of cemetery records by matching names to plots in a computer program, will label Veteran gravesides, repair gravestones or gravesides as able.
  • Supervise the design and construction of 21 kneelers for religious services.
  • Supervise building a small artificial island (a hummock) and planting Atlantic White Cedar saplings in the marsh.
  • Plan, coordinate, and lead a project to repaint 115 parking spaces, 3 handicap spaces, & 50' traffic curve.
  • Repair a one mile walking path, add new gravel spread, prune and remove obstructions, repair bridge, repair, or replace 12 signs, add SMART codes.
  • Design and lead the construction and installation of a rain garden.
  • Design and build a demonstration scale pavilion with a "green roof".
  • Re-build the roof and relocate the main information kiosk at county garden to a more visible location.
  • Sand and refinish 5 existing Teak benches, build 2 picnic tables and mulch under picnic tables.
  • Build an outdoor altar and service tables where the church could hold outdoor services.
  • Supervise the construction of five osprey nests and install them in different locations.
  • Supervise the rebuilding of a park area and make it usable by the policy officers and their community.
  • Supervise the replacement of worn flags, add new flag poles and anti-roll guard and trim tree limbs around parkway.
  • Design, build and install build a series of benches to form a semicircular outdoor amphitheater to seat approximately 70 people.
  • Design, build and install a Travers climbing wall in the gym.
  • Design and build a sports equipment shed 12’x8’ with a 6’opening for the door. For the storage of summer sports equipment.
  • Supervise the construction of an 8 by 10 feet shelter for the cats and will clean the surrounding area of debris.
  • Supervise the construction of two dugouts for the youth baseball fields.
  • Supervise the design, construction, and landscaping of a recreational trail.
  • Supervise the construction of a 1 mile trail used for education about the adjacent watershed at historic farm.
  • Supervise design and construction three free standing kayak racks for 18 total kayaks.
  • Supervise the construction of a sidewalk from a corner of the parking lot, down across the front of the church to an existing sidewalk.
  • Supervise construction and installation of 5 picnic tables (2 handicapped accessible), a horseshoe pit, a fire pit, and an instruction stand.
  • Supervise the design and construction of 3 pitching mounds at recreational park.
  • Supervise the construction of handicap picnic tables and restore 10 picnic tables.
  • Supervise the designs, construction, installing, of 4 or more picnic tables.
  • Supervise the design and construction of 6 picnic tables. Five tables will be six feet long and one will be eight feet long making it wheelchair accessible.
  • Supervise the construction of 2 new kayak storage racks for the community.
 
  • Re-screen 6 cabins with rat wire and regular screen
  • Construct handicap ramp, sidewalk, landscape plantings and flower garden
  • Construct 3 benches placed along trail
  • Fabricate and place 42 permanent but removable cross country course marker flags along course

  • Replace charcoal grill; build a new storage box, put down new “crush and run” gravel in the parking area, install a flag pole and 3 benches around the fire pit
  • Reconstruct “The Chapel in the Woods”, build and replace sign, build benches and create pathway, plant shrubs and build a table
  • Perform erosion control and site improvement to a living shore line
  • Construct rain garden to manage water runoff
  • Construct playground area and landscape 90’ X 20’ area
  • Renovate music storage room, add shelves, locking cabinets, and a filing cabinet
