1st SINO-US Workshop

"Applications in Biomedical Research"
Pasteur Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Jiao Tong University
Shanghai, China.
April 23-27, 2012

Our first workshop in the Peoples Republic of China was organized by the local committee of core lab managers and faculty led by Ruihong Zhu and Qianjun Zhang. Seventeen lectures and seven vendor presentations were delivered in the Jiao Tong University School of Medicine auditorium. Three hundred and eighty students registered for the lectures and 50 students attended the wet labs. Students came from other parts of China (Beijing, Hong Kong) and from the USA (Hawaii and Oklahoma). Twenty nine wet labs were conducted in the Becton Dickinson Center of Excellence labs, Jaio Tong University School of Medicine and at the Songshan Hospital of the Fudan University using a variety of flow analyzers and sorters provided by Beckman Coulter, Becton Dickinson, Miltenyi Biotech and the host institutions.

Keynote and valedictorian lectures were given by Dr. Michael Borowitz of the Johns Hopkins University and Dr. YR Liu of the Beijing University. Drs. Scott Cram, Vincent Shankey and Ruihong Zhu evaluated student answers to 44 questions covering subjects taught in lectures and wet labs. Five students scored 91% or better and were awarded membership in the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry or in the International Clinical Cytometry Society. These awards were funded by donations from the faculty.

Students rated 10 of the 12 lectures and 17 of the 18 lectures as very good to excellent. Most (80%) of the presentations (labs plus lectures) ranked 4.2-5.0 (on a scale of 1-5, poor to excellent).

Financial and excellent technical support for the workshop was provided by the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC), International Clinical Cytometry Society (ICCS), Beckman Coulter, Becton Dickinson, Miltenyi Biotec, Spherotec, Dakewe, FlowJo, Life Technologies, Phoenix Flow Systems, Variety Software House and Stem Cell Technologies. Administrative and logistic support was provided by Emerald Biotech.

Dinner receptions for the students and faculty were hosted by Beckman Coulter, Becton Dickinson and Miltenyi Biotec. A faculty appreciation dinner attended by visiting and local faculty, staff and associates was held on the last day of the workshop.
