FLOW CYTOMETRIC APPLICATIONS IN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH
October 4th-17th, 2012

Dr. D.Y. Patil Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Institute, Pune, hosted a two day symposium on “Applications of Laser Flow Cytometry in Biomedical Research’ on 4th and 5th of October, 2012. Fifty students from Dr. D.Y. Patil University and Dr. D. Y. Patil Biotechnology & Bioinformatics Institute attended lectures presented by the nine invited speakers from India and abroad. Dr. Manish Bodas (Organizing Secretary), Dr. Neelu Nawani (Treasurer) and Dr. M.B. Khetmalas (Director) hosted the symposium. The opening ceremony and graduation was attended by Dr. P. D. Patil, President and Dr. P.N. Razdan, Vice Chancellor, of the Dr. D.Y. Patil University.

Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati. Dr. Latha Rangan and Dr. R.Swaminathan of the Biotechnology Department hosted the workshop from 8-10th of October 2012. Twenty two registered students attended three days of 8 lectures and 5 wet labs covering the “Applications of Laser Flow Cytometry in Plant Genomics and Nanotechnology”. Instruments and technical support for the wet labs was provided by Beckman Coulter and Becton Dickinson. Lectures were open to students of the local institutions and out of the 22 registered students in the wet labs, 7 were from outside the Assam state.

Calcutta University, Center for Research in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CRNN), University of Calcutta and the Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research, Govt. of West Bengal hosted the 5th annual meeting of the Cytometry Society, India and the 13th Indo-US Cytometry Workshop from 12th to 17th of October 2012. More than 150 delegates from all over India attended. Fifty three students registered for the wet labs using a variety of analyzers and cell sorters available in the CCRN, National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) and the Tata Memorial Hospital.

The Cytometry Society, India organized a symposium on applications of laser flow cytometry in Cancer Biology, Imaging and Inflammation and Monitoring of minimal residual disease. Dr. John Nolan, President of the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry was the key note speaker in the Cytometry Society meeting.

The main theme of the 13th Indo-US Cytometry workshop was ‘Role of Cytometry in tackling infectious diseases’. An oral prize session to select the ‘Cytometrist of the Year’ was a keenly attended session in the meeting.

The Becton Dickinson Award for the best scientific publication in flow cytometry from India was presented to Dr. Pawan Gupta of IMTECH Chandigarh. He was presented with a cash award at a banquet ceremony hosted by the Becton Dickinson Company. Support for instrumentation was provided by Beckman Coulter, Becton Dickinson and Leica. A dinner reception for the attendees was hosted by the Beckman Coulter at the historic Calcutta Club.

Dr. H. Krishnamurthy conducted a flow quiz covering most of the subjects taught at Guwahati and Kolkata. The quiz toppers were given ‘Awtar Krishan Prize’ which carried a certificate and cash prize. The quiz toppers were also sponsored for free membership in TCS and ISAC.

Student evaluation rated all of the lectures and wet labs presented in Guwahati and Kolkata with an above 3.0 score on a scale of 1-4 (Poor to Excellent). Comments from the attendees were highly appreciative of the opportunity to learn from the experts with some suggestions for inclusion of topics not covered.

The visiting faculty sponsored eleven new members (three full and eight students) for ISAC.

The TCS and Workshop Program organizing committee discussed and approved the following host sites for the 2013 workshops: Medanta Medical Center in Gurgaon (2 day clinical symposium), SriRamachandra Medical Center, Chennai (3 day workshop) and Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar (TCS annual meeting and 4 day wet workshop). The organizers of the Pune, Guwahati and Kolkata wish to thank ISAC, ICCS and Govt. of India funding agencies (DBT for Guwahati workshop, DBT-CTEP for Kolkata workshop, CSIR, ICMR, DRDO and DAE), vendors (BC, BD, Amgen, TreeStar) for providing financial and technical support for the 13th Indo-US cytometry workshops.
