Laser flow cytometry is an important tool  for detection and analysis of tumor cells and other molecules of diagnostic and therapeutic value. Laser flow cytometry is extensively used for study of cellular proliferation, phenotype  marker expression in tumor diagnosis and for monitoring response of cancer patients to therapy.

The Indo-US Cytometry workshops were initiated in 2001 by Dr. Awtar Krishan in collaboration with Dr. Ranbir Sobti and Dr. Arvinder Singh iwith the express purpose of interfacing Indian researchers with experts in cytometry from abroad. With the collaboration and active support of instrument manufacturers (who provide their latest instruments and staff for the workshops), the Live Education Task Force of the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC) and a growing group of core faculty members, a large number of Indian researchers have been trained in the latest methods of cytometric analysis.

We have used the Indo-US workshop model to conduct workshops in ASEAN countries (Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, Jakarta), Turkey (Istanbul, Marmara, Ankara, Antalya) , Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and in China (Shanghai, Beijing). Similar workshops have also been held in San Diego, Miami and are planned for Prague and Rio in 2016.
