Workshop schedule

The American Indian Language Development Institute in collaboration with Google Earth Outreach Trainer’s Network, Cayuse Technologies and Tamastaslikt Cultural Institute announces the Google Mapping and Language Workshop, February 22 & 23, 2017 Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, Pendleton, Oregon

For this workshop you will need 

  • a wifi enabled laptop computer
  • a smartphone or wifi enabled tablet (Android preferred)
  • the ability to use a Google Account
  • the ability to access Google Drive and add apps to your laptop and mobile device (please talk with your IT department if using a work or school computer)
  • Google Earth Pro (now free)
  • Google Chrome
  • Firefox

Hands-on sessions

Day 1

Day 2

Day 2 activities:

Google Earth Interviews

1. Find a partner and designate who will be the interviewer

2. The interviewer opens Google Earth and creates a new Folder, label the folder

3. The interviewer will ask their partner a series of questions: add a placemark for each answer, write the information from the interview in the description box, give the placemark a name and drag it into the folder

4. Create subfolders for each major topic: home, work, favorite places

5. Switch places and spend 15 minutes conducting the second interview in the same fashion

6. When you are finished with your interviews, style your maps

Google My Maps field work

1. Find a partner and designate who will be the interviewer

2. Open Google Drive, create a folder, share it with your partner

3. Within the folder create a My Maps

4. Create two layers in the My Maps, label one with your partner's name, have your partner label the second with your name

5. Both of you will now add content to the My Maps at the same time. Discuss what you will map and assign roles, each will map on your own layer.

7. Open your map on an Android phone using the My Maps app

8. Add additional points and lines to your My Maps

9. Refresh the maps on your computers and look at your My Maps, organize and style the new points
