The second session was preseneted by Andreas Hadjipanayi (Technical Account Manager at the local Microsoft Office in Cyprus).

So, after having some fun by trying out Microsoft's Kinect our event started!

The first speaker, Michael, started talking about Clustering in SQL Server 2008:

The session was very interesting as Business Continuity is always a hot topic!

Michael's session, among other, featured a full live demo on how we can set up a SQL Server 2008 Cluster:

After Michael's session completed, Andreas started presenting his session and explained how Microsoft has become more open through
the years:

Among other, he also mentioned that Microsoft runs an Open Source Technology Center!

Another event took place here at CDNUG. As 2011 approaches we are in the process of planning more events in order to give the chance
to fellow Community members in Cyprus to get even more educated on the latest Microsoft Technologies such as .NET 4, Visual Studio 2010,
SQL Server 2011 and much more!

From all of us here at CDNUG, we wish you a happy new year 2011 and see you soon at our next event in January 2011!

Many thanks to the hospitality and support of Microsoft Cyprus, for hosting our User Group's last offline event before summer holidays!

This event was celebratory. It was the last offline event before summer holidays. The next offline event will take place after two months time, in September 2010.

Due to the nature of this event, we had two sessions! The first session, dedicated to Windows 7 Development was presented by Ioannis Stavrinides (MCP, MCTS) - (Blog, Twitter), active member of our User Group. The second session was preseneted by Artemakis Artemiou (CDNUG Lead, SQL Server MVP, INETA Country Leader for Cyprus, MCP, MCTS, MCITP) - (Blog, Twitter).

So, after having a Greek frappé coffee and some sweets, we started the event!

Then, Ioannis started his presentation by first introducing to us WPF:

The attendess were amazed by the capabilities of WPF:

Then Ioannis showed with many live demos how we can use WPF and the Windows API Code Pack for Microsoft .NET Framework through Visual Studio 2010 for building Jump Lists, Progress Bars, Tabbed Thumbnails and Tabbed Toolbars. Also, we saw how we can make use of the Icon Overlay feature.

After Ioannis's great session, Artemakis started presenting his session. Artemakis talked about the new features for Developers and IT Pros included in SQL Server 2008 R2. He started his presentation by talking about the Database Engine - Manageability Enhancements in this release of SQL Server:

Then, after presenting some more slides, he jumped into a series of live demos, showing all of these features in action!

Some of the key features / tools shipped with SQL Server 2008 R2 are:

  • Connectivity to SQL Azure
  • Data-tier Application Upgrade
  • SQL Server Utility
  • Master Data Services
  • StreamInsight
  • Enhancements in Reporting Services
  • ...and much more!

In this photo Artemakis is showing a demo of using SQL Server Utility Explorer:

And of course, the session could not be considered completed, without showing a live demo of SQL Server PowerPivot!

The last demo featured Master Data Services:

This was our last offline event before summer holidays. We really enjoyed it as besides the technical discussions, we are a group of people sharing a common passion for technology and it is always a pleasure to get together. This is after all the exciting part of belonging to a technical community. Before saying a goodbye for summer holidays, on the following article, Artemakis talks about the significance of techical communities. It is an article that explains the purpose of technical communities and the benefits of being a part of such a community.

We would like to express our gratitude to Microsoft Cyprus & Malta for supporting our events throughout all these years.

We would also like to personally thank Evangelos Hadjichristodoulou and Karl Davies-Barret for actively supporting our User Group.

Last but not least, a huge thank you to our User Group members for actively participating to our events as speakers and attendees, thus making it possible to share the common passion for technology. Thank you!

See you all after summer holidays!

Event #17 - October 27 2009: Introducing Visual Studio 2010 Beta - An Introduction to the Windows Azure Platform

posted Dec 17, 2012, 10:21 AM by Cyprus .Net User Group

Date: 27/10/2009, Nicosia
Members Present: 10
Location: Microsoft Cyprus Office
Presentation: Introducing Visual Studio 2010 Beta / An Introduction to the Windows Azure Platform

Many thanks to the hospitality and support of Microsoft Cyprus, for hosting our User Group's event!

This event was "celebratory" as it was the first offline event after summer holidays. Of course, during the summer, we had the opportunity to attend many online events on .NET and SQL Server technologies. Among other, in July 29, Artemakis Artemiou (Blog, Twitter), our User Group Lead and SQL Server MVP, delivered a talk on the new Programmability features in SQL Server 2008 and more specifically about the T-SQL Enhancements (Review). Additionally he participated to the 24 Hours of PASS, and MY-TG SQL Server Community Series as a speaker, delivering Live Webcasts on ADO .NET Data Services (Review) and Sync Framework respectively (Review).

Due to the nature of this event, we had two great sessions delivered by two great speakers! In the first session, Karl Davies-Barrett, Developer Platform Evangelist at Microsoft Malta & Cyprus and great friend of CDNUG, talked about Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 and demonstrated many of its great new features. In the second session, Luka Debeljak, CEE DPE Regional Technical Lead at Microsoft Corporation, introduced to us the Microsoft Windows Azure Platform from a developer’s perspective.

Here is a photo of our two speakers and our User Group lead (from the left to the right: Karl Davies-Barrett, Luka Debeljak, Artemakis Artemiou)!

Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 will provide the .NET developer with a huge variety of new enhancements in areas such as: Application Lifecycle Management, Developer Experience, Cloud Development, Web Development and last but not least, Parallel Programming.

In his session, Karl talked about all these features and with the use of some really interesting demos, showed us how the developer can take advantage of these features and thus, have a fantastic development experience!

Right after Karl's session, we moved on with the introduction to the Windows Azure Platform by Luka!

Windows Azure is a new, cloud services Microsoft Operating System that serves as the development, service hosting and service management environment for the Windows Azure platform. The Windows Azure platform offers an intuitive, reliable and powerful platform for the creation of web applications and services. The Windows Azure platform is comprised of Windows Azure: an operating system as a service; SQL Azure: a fully relational database in the cloud; and .NET Services: consumable web-based services that provide both secure connectivity and federated access control for applications.

Luka talked about the Microsoft Windows Azure Platform and also provided information regarding all the services currently offered for hosting/management on the platform. To this end, we were presented many live demos of SQL Azure and .NET Services. Luka also demonstrated how we can develop .NET applications for hosting on the Windows Azure Platform using the Windows Azure tools for Visual Studio. The development environment for the demos was Microsoft Visual 2010 something which proved that it was a really great idea hosting these two sessions within a single event!

The User Group member were excited with the two sessions and some really long discussions took place!

A BIG thank you to Karl Davies-Barrett and Luka Debeljak for delivering these two really interesting sessions to our User Group. Thanks for supporting CDNUG!
