9th & 10th Grade Accounting and Personal Finance

 
Course Description:  All businesses require accounting skills.  A good head for money management is beneficial in business & your personal life.  In this course you’ll learn entry-level skills for many job opportunities available in the accounting field.  Through this course you will be able to establish an excellent foundation for continuing your education in business or just improving your personal understanding of money & money management.  Whether you plan to work for a small business, a Fortune 500 company, or dream of someday owning your own business, this class will lay a vital foundation for your success.  

Suggested Readings: For students who wish to expand their knowledge and get a better grasp of the world of business and economics and how they impact every aspect of your their lives I will provide a list here of books and articles I have found informative.
  • "Smart Women Finish Rich: 9 Steps to Achieving Financial Security and Funding Your Dreams" - David Bach
  • David Bach has also written the "Finish Rich Workbook" which is useful for helping you to plan your goals and put them into action.  He has also written "Smart Couples Finish Rich" for when you  are entering the married phase of your life.  His series also have great information for men and he has books for all phases of your life such as "Start Late, Finish Rich" and "The Automatic Millionaire"
  • Business Week, The Economist, and World magazines are always full of relevant articles and cover both the left and right sides of the issues
  • "Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money--That the Poor and the Middle Class Do Not!" - Robert T. Kiyosaki
  • "Rich Dad, Poor Dad for Teens: The Secrets About Money -- That You Don't Learn in School" - Robert T. Kiyosaki
  • Robert Kiyosaki has written numerous other books related to this area and other specialized areas
  • "The Slight Edge: Secret to a Successful Life" -  Jeff Olson

Homework Reminder:
Students are to either write their own song or they can use an existing song and rewrite the words.  They are to write a song reflecting concepts they have learned in their Personal Finance class this year.  They will then create a music video of their song to turn in by Friday April 9, 2010 and show to the class.  The rubric for this assignment is listed below.  Use a video camera or the goanimate.com website.
