The Cutting Edge Consortium, supported by over 50 groups, networks, and individual members, of all faith, beliefs, and none, welcomes and supports World Pride 2012 in its campaign to combat homophobia and transphobia, at home and overseas. CEC fully supports the demand for the decriminalisation of homosexuality worldwide and the promotion of global LGBT equality.
The need for a strong international commitment to such equality and human rights, not least in the Commonwealth, is highlighted by threats to restore the pernicious Anti-Homosexuality Law, including the death penalty, in Uganda. It is a scandal that Ugandan religious leaders, including those previously opposed to the legislation, have now taken the lead in creating a climate of oppression, discrimination, and violence not only for LGBT people but for all who support their rights to life and respect.
We call on religious leaders of all faiths, both in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, to support World Pride 2012’s campaign for liberty and equality so that the common good may become a reality in which all people can freely share, rather than some. We call on those faith-communities, organisations, and aid agencies, to condemn the actions of anyone purporting to promote their faith or belief, through the discrimination, violence, and murder of others.
At the same time, we cannot be complacent, even in those places where we enjoy the freedom to engage in LGBT Pride events, and must be alert to attempts to undermine hard-won legal rights and social equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people.
